Re: Disturbing Character premises... Speaking of gender-benders...I actually ran in a BESM game a character who was inspired by the aliens in "Left Hand of Darkness" and would shift genders in a 3 month cycle. Sadly, the game died before the rest of the party found out...

Re: What to do about long, mysterious absences? It doesn't even need to be angst...it could be something happy. Maybe sister has found romance with someone or has an educational or professional opportunity out-of-state/overseas that has her "stretching the wings" for independence and that could cause a little conflict.

Another possible villain could be Arawn, Celtic god of the Underworld (used in the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander).
