I saw an interesting article today suggesting how to fix the game of soccer / football in six simple steps.
 
1. The field is too freaking big. Make it much, much smaller.
 
2. There are too many players. With the smaller field, cut the teams down to three attackers, two defenseman, and one goalkeeper per side.
 
3. Reduce the size of the goal to make scoring chances more exciting.
 
4. Allow unlimited substitution during the game. Furthermore, allow players to substitute without stopping play.
 
5. Cover the entire field in ice.
 
6. Give all the players sticks.
 
I didn't recognize the name of the author, but I sure like the way they think.

I would hope that somehow the Iranian players and coaches would be given the opportunity to defect to a 3rd country before they leave Qatar, though the fury of the Iranian regime probably would focus on their families back home.  For me to say more would make this political.

Between football games last weekend, I caught The Princess Bride on cable. I love this movie more and more every time I see it.

My brother and I were both joking that Portugal and Brazil could also compete in the synchronized diving events. I missed the portugal game, but according to him, Renaldo should be given an oscar for the dive that got him the PK.

Valid point. Kent Nelson mentioned in the movie that, thanks to the Helmet of Nabu, he'd already lived over a century.
 
I have read widespread interest among the fandom for a Dr. Fate prequel movie starring Pierce Brosnan. Personally I'd be very down for that.

I also suspect, going meta, that they wanted to give the helmet to someone younger to play Fate in the future. I also got the impression that they were presenting a very tired and older Fate here.

I can see what y'all are saying, but speaking from the point of view of this movie, Dr. Fate isn't the lead character. If it was his movie, or comic, you would expect him to win, but it isn't. Black Adam and Sabbac are both legitimate threats to top-tier DC heroes, and I have no problem with Fate losing to them if in the process he's treated with respect. IMO Dr. Fate was respected in this movie.

The big problematic issue with this is that you end up with writers having no freaking clue about the existing characters, their personality, their  abilities and their history. There is a better than even chance to misrepresent these characters and make them do things the writer wants rather than what the character would ordinarily do. As such it becomes a BIG RED FLAG to the audience to stay away or apply caution.

Similarly, the Broncos of the late '80s went to three Super bowls largely on a good defense and John Elway's strength of will. It wasn't until he got Terrell Davis in the backfield that they were actually able to win a couple.

The post-Zero Hour Hawk God one probably could, and I think that recent Hawkman series retconned Barbatos as one of Hawkman's incarnations, so...  As far as classic superhero versions of the character, though, no. Comics seem to go back and forth on whether he's just a regular guy using weird science and magical gear or has innate superhuman qualities as well, but even in the latter cases he was never one of the heavy hitters.
 
That said, I think what the movie did with him worked extremely well, and they needed someone who was able to go toe-to-toe with Black Adam in a physical fight, even if at an advantage. Hodge's performance felt more in-character for the Carter Hall I remember than any live action adaptation I've seen previously, even if the particular details of his superheroics deviated from the source material.

On one of the web comics I read, the main writer's daughter had discovered the MCU - due to She-Hulk. So he is watching his way through the MCU with her. He made a great comment that I think shows a major difference in why I liked Favreau's directing vs Waititi:

I say “somehow”, but it’s largely thanks to Jon Favreau. He made a lot of decisions that established the MCU formula. In fact, the first Iron Man addresses some common complaints of later MCU movies. There are plenty of jokes, but it doesn’t feel like the movie needs to hit a quips quota. And not every character is funny. Really, it’s just Tony and Happy. Everyone else is serious.
Speaking of serious, the film takes its villain seriously. No jokes about the villain’s name, not off hand comments at the villain’s expense, no scene of the villain looking foolish. In fact, the finale is the longest stretch of the movie without a joke.
Director Jon Favreau knew when to emphasize the fantastic and when to ground Iron Man. Stark Industries weapons, for example, aren’t outside the realm of modern military possibility. And the Iron Man suit doesn’t have a technological solution to every problem. It has, like, two weapons. This emphasizes that without the suit, Tony Stark still has superpowers.
Jon Favreau got a lot of credit for directing the movie that launched the MCU, but these days Kevin Feige seems to be the name equated to its success. I know Favreau still regularly appears as Happy Hogan and he works with Disney on Star Wars, but I wonder if we’ll ever see him direct another MCU film.
 
Basically, he knows when to be funny and when to be serious. Ragnarok had way to many moments of try to be funny when it should be serious.
