After having their season-opening lossless streak broken by the MInnesota Loons, Seattle goes to the home stadium of the new franchise in Austin.  With their squad all but gutted by injuries, international duties, and a suspension, Brian Schmetzer puts FIVE teenagers on the field... and wins on a shot by the 31-year-old Ruidiaz that, if the announcer had been Mexican rather than English, he would still be howling out an extended GOOOOLLLLLAAAAAZZOOOOOOOO....

Well Britain has its first medals which is a relief. One silver and one bronze.

The Women's cycling threw up a real upset. Anna Kiesenhofer of Austria won gold by getting away in a breakaway and not being caught. She had about a 1 Km lead when she finished. Austria last won a cycling medal 125 years ago. The Dutch should have managed a pursuit but failed to realise that there were three ahead and not two.

So the USA men's basketball team opened their Olympic experience by losing to France, 83-76.

It's become obvious in the last decade or so that the talent gap between the United States and the rest of the world has become very narrow. The only way Team USA is going to win the gold here is by playing very good basketball. And sadly, I don't think a lot of American players really know how to play fundamentally sound basketball. What they play in the NBA isn't very much like the actual game of basketball, as it turns out.

There are reasons why I haven't watched the NBA since the Bird-Johnson-Erving era.  Jordan was great, unimaginably great, but what his ability did for the quality of the game and how the NBA chose to evolve in pursuit of more press and more profits turned their product into something I find unwatchable.  The public display of contempt by the league office when the Sonics were moved out to Oklahoma iced the deal.  BIH, David Stern.

There was a lot of NBA talent on each team.

Personally if I wanted to watch the NBA players play, I'd watch the NBA.

Well Britain now has gold medals. One of our racing certainties won (Adam Peaty) and I saw Tom Pidcock win the cyclocross gold. But the one gold that Britain got was for Tom Daley who is from Plymouth. He has competed in four Olympics but this is the first time he has got the gold. This was in pairs synchronised diving.

Osaka is out of the tennis. Andy Murray has dropped out of the singles but will still play doubles.

Bermuda have won a gold in the triathlon.

Saw a news item about the Australian surfer winning bronze. But this is the guy who suffered a brain injury and has had to recover.

What is making the news from the Olympics for the Australians ? Seriously.

One of the issues for USA Basketball is that the NBA's become largely a freedom of movement league, with an overwhelming focus on 3s.  That game can be squeezed...the Bucks showed this quite emphatically.  International rules allow much more physical defense...like, gee, what the Bucks did to the Suns.

It also shows the problem with the thought that if one superstar is good, 7 is better.  NOT necessarily...particularly this year with little time to acclimate to each other.  They don't know how to play *together*, don't know who should be doing what.  They're thinking too much, not reacting.  Basically, they're this year's Nets.  And on the flip side, going with too much offensive focus leads to defensive weaknesses...so you can't squeeze the other team.

I also think that scheduling played a big factor.  The 2019 Finals ended a month earlier, which means every other round completed faster.  There was no time to assemble this team.

Whoa...this in, Simone Biles withdraws from the Olympics before the team finals....  Mental health cited.  This is going to raise eyebrows.

Do you know if the US will be able to sub in someone or are they just out of contention?

IIRC they take 6 and field 4, so, yes, they subbed.  Took silver.

EDIT:  DOH!!! In the team competition, which this was, the whole team is in play.  They pick 4 per apparatus, but it need not be the same 4 each time.  There is little reason to require a team to specify which 4 before their rotation on a given apparatus comes up, and AFAIK no such requirement exists.

Brazil took gold in the men's surfing while America took gold in the women's. This is the only medal for America other than the gymnastics I knew anything about.

Primoz Roglic won the cycling time trial with Tom Dumoulin taking silver. This is good for both as Roglic missed out on the Tour de France last year and crashed out this year while Dumoulin took a break from cycling at the start of the year. To get a silver as he did at Rio is good.

elsewhere the steering went wrong for one of our rowing events.

And Biles is out of the all round final. If someone of her calibre decides to pull out and the team officials are supporting her that says an awful lot. That she is also making it public is good as well.

Britain got Gold and Silver in the BMX so now have golds in all the cycling disciplines over the Olympic history. Bronze in women's trampoline behind two Chinese athletes. Silver and bronze in the swimming as well. And finally break the coming fourth in the rowing with two bronze.

Ethiopia win the 10,000 m gold, the first track final in Tokyo

Djokovic out of the tennis.
