Info On The First Champions Ever

If I remember correctly, there was an even older incarnation of the Champions before the Seeker-days... I think some of their members were some guys named Goliath, Dragon and Marksman.

Can somebody tell me where I can get more info on those characters (old books or somehting), or maybe some updated (5E) write-ups?

Re: Info On The First Champions Ever

I think you'll find them by searching for "Guardians". They were PCs in a campaign for which the system was designed, and as such weren't "owned" by just one person. Also, the group's membership fluctuated because the lineup in the Champions RPG did not match the comic (due to distributed IP/ownership), and then the comic continued without the licenses by changing everyone's name (and sometimes gender).

I don't think they were ever updated for 5th edition.

A partial list:

Marksman

Goliath/Giant

Flare

Icestar (property of Glen Thain, IIRC)

Rose

Gargoyle (property of Mark Williams, IIRC)

Re: Info On The First Champions Ever

They were never in an official product although some were in the Champions Comic and had stats there.

Those were Flare, Marksman, Icestar, Goliath and Rose.

Dove and Gargoyle were never statted although they were seen on the product covers especially Gargoyle on Enemies 1 and 2.

I'd love to see the Guardians statted out for FREd' date=' especially with Dennis occasionally visiting the site :)[/quote']

Dennis may occasinoly visit this site, but I doubt that he would post anything, since members of the managment are still angry at his statement of "I can do theas charaters beter then there creators." (well, a rough quote, since I don't remember exactly what he said).

He was acualy a good writer (he wrote both The Great Supervillian Contest and The Colorous Effect, beyond the Champions comics). I do wish he and the managment would burry the hatchet, and start to work together again. Unforcently, I do not see this happening anytime soon.

They made several appearances in the books, just not stats. And Marksman was in the Fuzion stuff.

Re: Info On The First Champions Ever

Exerpt from the dedication page of the 1st printing of Champions:

Glenn "Icestar" Thain

Steve "Force" Goodman

Bruce "Marksman" Harlick

Stacy "Mind Maid" Laurence

Doug "Mercenary" Garret

The Tuesday Night Gang

Not all of these characters became regular members of the Guardians and several more were added.

Down the road, maybe some or all of the respective creators could get together and work out some sort of licensing deal out with DOJ and get some sort of "Classic Champions" book out there ala the Strike Force book.

Re: Info On The First Champions Ever

This makes me wonder... I started playing Champions in Junior High, 1986. I had the main Champions book, I don't know what edition that was...and I picked up during JHS Champions 2 and 3 as well as many of the smaller books.

I distinctly remember boxes with a small picture of a guy reading "Goodman says..." giving game advice. That was Champions 2, I think. I didn't have anyone to play Champions with after 1989 or so, had a brief brush with Fantasy Hero a few years ago and finally am getting back into a Champions game right now.

So here's what I wonder...what changes in management have occurred over the life of the game? Was there a TSR-like situation or did the key developers stay around the whole time?

Re: Info On The First Champions Ever

Well sense I have been hanging around there have been three sets of owners

DOJ - Current

Cybergames...less said the better

when I first started coming around Bruce Haclick(sp) was in charge

Before that a company called Iron Crown Entertainment (ICE) was publishing but not sure if they were third party or not...

Basicly, what JmOz wrote is true. But let me clarifie some things...

1) Before Cybergames, but after I.C.E., there was "Fuzion", which was a co-operation with Hero Games and R. Tasoliean (makers of Mekton Zeta). Together, thay made Champions: The New Milimumem, Usagi Yojimbo RPG, Bubblegum Crises RPG, and the Dragon Ball Z RPG (amoung others) using the vareation of the Hero System rules which mixed in R. Talsoriean's house system also. "Fuzion" still exists, othoe I don't think there is a curently published game which uses it (DBZ's last RPG supliment delt with the Android Saga, so we missed the Cell Game). Later, when R. Tal went under (?), thay formed Cybergames, then went under/transformed into the DOJ we all know and love.

2) ICE was defently a third party. Thay published Hero stuff, and sora sub-managed the company.

3) Before ICE, there was Hero Games. Yes, Hero Games started out as a self-published game. Hay...it worked for Guardians Of Order...
