Re: Musings on Random Musings

"Manchurians" would seem to be more appropriate. Similar to how people from Denmark are Denmarkians' date=' and New Zealanders are Kiwis. And Kansans are Jayhawks. And Illinoisese are Hoosiers.[/quote']

Indianans are hoosiers. Illinoisians are not worth mentioning.

Wow' date=' corporate is really playing hardball with the union here.[/quote']

Of course they are. For as much as OWS is bringing economic inequity to the forefront of the spotlight, the Big Boys™ still have all the muscle and the momentum. Ergo, they are going to get all they can for as long as they can.

Re: Musings on Random Musings

People from Kentucky are Hillbillies.

The classier ones are Hillwilliams.

Not all hillbillies are in Kentucky nor is everyone in Kentucky a hillbilly.

People from Indiana are called Hoosiers. The word "Hoosier" was an etymological riddle for a long time, but in recent years linguistic researchers at Indiana University (where else?) have announced they are confident it derives from an old English dialect word hoos meaning, originally, "something big" that came to mean "hill" and "Hoosiers" originally meant those who dwelt on, or among, hills. In other words - hillbilly.

Re: Musings on Random Musings

And the difference in power consumption? Were these fluorescent or LED backlit?

LCDs, Flourecent.

The power consumption was much better, like 30%

Thing is in Oregon it works out to about $.06 per KWH, and the quick and nasty formulae I used (based on my own power bill) came out to about a net gain of like $167 a year (almost one complete monitor); but in Hawaii - the website had their power at near $.15/kwh and the savings was greater closer to $320 a year or almost 2 monitors.

This was a bulk purchase from Dell. Didn't include any deals either. My research was pretty slack. All I remember was Hawaii had significantly higher power rates than Oregon.

And LED monitors are even better, of course.

Per Wikipedia, Jacob Piatt Dun's "Hoosier from Anglo-Saxon hoo" theory is no longer accepted. The evidence is confused, and, as with other variations on theories about English archaicisms sneaking across the Atlantic suffers from a lack of people in England using the phrase. (Too bad someone didn't try to link it the Moundbuilders via "Sutton Hoo." That would have been a cool urban myth.)

Even more damning, there were people named "Hoosier" around and about well before the nickname was coined. Wikipedia points me at French huisier, literally "houser," now normally used for the office of usher or bailiff (because they open and close doors), but with a probable original meaning something like the English usage "peasant." Check out the chapter on early land claims in the Northwest Territory here. Indiana was pretty solidly "huisier" in the early days.

It gets better; the electric company is starting to actively resist the installation of photovoltaic panels on residences. (There's sort of a valid reason for that--fluctuations in demand on the grid over large areas or neighborhoods, as clouds go by or whatever, would certainly put a strain on the grid. But it would help if the grid didn't, like, suck.)

I'm remembering something about an abandoned wind farm? (I could be mistaken quite easily)

Re: Musings on Random Musings

A few decades ago the electric company put up a couple of windmills to see if a switch to wind power was feasible. They were relatively inefficient and unreliable and couldn't compete with historically low gas prices at the time.

Today there's a wind farm on Maui, another on the Big Island, and several others in the works... that are being actively resisted by local environmental groups.
