Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

For what's worth, Top 10 has a number of plain-looking characters, both male and female. Jack Phantom and Toy Box strike me as average looking, as is... errr.... Synthstasia (spelling?) On the male side, a number of officers are pudgy, such as Shock-headed Peter and Dust Devil.

Anime and manga are pretty much as lost cause if you don't want sex. Since Japan gears its titles to specific age and gender groups, and has less issues with nudity in comics, such elements can be quite common (not to mention the market geared directly to XXX anime and manga). And, of course, the artists all wants to draw pretty girls (and/or boys) so finding plain-looking characters can be tough.

Yeah, but then who would want to read it? I, for one, would buy Wonder Woman, but would balk at buying Plain Jane.

Now, if Jane were cute, and wore a French Maid outfit, that I might consider.

Comic books are fantasy, and pulpish fantasy, at that. :sneaky:

I would buy a comic about Plain Jane if it was the one from Underworld Enemies, page 79-81. She has a great gimmick. And you would NEVER see her knocking boots with someone. They would have to notice her first.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

And don't get me started on Juggernaut and She-Hulk having a one night stand...

hey, I love sex and am a fan of naughty comics, too.

But, I'd like to keep sex in mainstream comics a) in the background, and B) at least somewhat logical. She Hulk and Wyatt Wingfoot, her longtime boyfriend? Sure. She hulk and some guy she picked up at a bar? Okay, it's not flattering but if they want to make her the female version of Hercules, alright then. She Hulk and a guy who was a supervillain yesterday and has over the course of his career tried to kill many she considered her friends? Knowingly? Uhm. No.

"Once you've gone Juggernaut, you're physically incapable of going back."

Mego Spidey, Toyfare magazine.

'Nuff said.

Exactly. But then, we have to remember that most of these writers seem like they don't care about the characters. They have a story to tell and the characters are there to do whatever it is the writer wants to do - history, logic, and character integrity be DA**ED.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

I haven't read comics in years, but aren't most of the artists men? Men who probably got their start drawing nudes on their pee-cees in high school? Are there any "famous" female comic book artists?

Also, most "famous" artists started before there were "pee-cees" to draw nudes on...

I figured that was a typo for pee-chees.

Oh, and without looking at the list,

That would make more sense. I had wondered if I had missed a reference to some obscure bit of American culture.

This is of course why I prefer to play Australian* characters in PBEMs, no matter where they are set. There's always at least a slight chance of missing some reference like this.

* Or some reasonable substitute, like my "son of the Phantom-homage" character, who comes from a vaguely East Timor-like island, but went to boarding school in Australia.

Sex for only the sake of sex does nothing in telling a story. One of the probleams with the 'Rust Age' of comics.

The same thing could and should be said for fighting for only the sake of fighting, something comics are traditionally very guilty of (see Marvel Team-Up and Heroes Misunderstanding Fight). Both are eye candies, shallow, maybe, but within limited amounts they may spice up the story nicely and fine. When they become overabundant or unjustified to the point of silliness and annoyance, they become a problem

"Pee-Chees", that's right. That was years ago. I guess my point was that they say men think about sex every 8 seconds, but they never say how often women think about it.

Elfquest had some really steamy stuff, as did the Savage Sword of Conan. The drawings were larger than comic books, and without color, I guess you could really use your imagination.:)

This raises a really excelent point. A lot of comics can be fighting for fighting's sake and as you say eye candy, but perfectly enjoyable so long as the reader's desires are aligned and their expectations are set.

Scott McCloud's "DESTROY!" (I think there might be 2 or 3 more exclamation points there) is a great example of both a fight book and a parody of comics' gratuituous fight scenes, a loving view, not biting or bitter satire. It's enjoyable both for the over-the-top fighting, with whole skyscrapers brought down, as well as the humor.

And there's nothing wrong with that. That was my point about sex for sex' sake - if we know the story is pornographic, then we know that it is just that, and (if we are so inclined) we can enjoy it.

And just as you say, violence and sex of course can easily interfere and there is a line where it's gratuitous and a turn-off. I've certainly seen lots of superhero comics with pointless, annoying violence, although I haven't read superhero comics with gratuitous sex, since I read so few contemporary superhero comics. Although I have seen plenty of non-superhero comics with that, and it is annoying. And I have walked out of movies for gratuitous, pointless violence. My wife and I walked out of Kill Bill 1 somewhere around 20-30 minutes before the end, I realize others don't see it that way and I know it's intended as some sort of homage to martial arts films, yeah yeah yeah, well I think it's a giant waste of a lot of people's talent, and a travesty, frankly, and both my wife and I are (otherwise) huge Tarantino fans. I intend to spark no debate and I respect others feel differently, but to us it's the perfect example of pointless, story-destroying violence, and I use it just to point out how one's perception of that does destroy a story. It's also a good example of how perception varies! For example, at least for the first 2/3rds of the Preacher series, I think the violence was often gratuitous in a manner of speaking, in that it was often just to highlight the violence of the world, but to me it worked, given the way the story flowed. I know others disagree. So it's a huge matter of perception. And I DO like heavy violence in CERTAIN types of stories. For my tastes, I guess, I turn off when I think the violence is being glorified, becoming something that I am being told "This is cool, people should do this!" Or where it is seems to be pandering for no good reason (i.e., it purports to tell a story but uses violence just to draw the audience in because "people love to watch blood" in the writer's mind).

For what it's worth, I read a study a LONG time ago so can't cite it that some figure similar to what you mention for men and it was something like every 4 minutes or so for women.

I'd also add in Warren Ellis's Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E., which is deliberately made up of mostly fight sequences. Of course, that's part of the idea and humor behind the comic -- back to the basics action with none of that namby-pansy character development and introspection. It's also a load of fun.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

Interestingly (to me anyway), in my erpererience in PBEMs its female players that tend to be more interested in the romantic and sexual aspects of their characters and in detailing those scences often explictly. Personally, I've run tin more female fans of highly sexual series (like the Anita Blake novels) than male as well. This isn't in any way scientific and I'm not claiming it means anything, just an observation.

My GF and several other women I knew raved about the semi-graphic sex scenes in Jean Auel's Earth's Children series; whereas the guys who read it seemed to enjoy other aspects such as the exotic setting of prehistoric Europe and the adventure aspects of the stories.

I suspect my GF would really like the Anita Blake series; since she also likes vampire stories.

Considering that I'm running a Fantasy Hero game using a similar setting I really should read those books...

How in the world could something like that possible be tested?

I've seen parodies of the X-Men called that. It's a fairly obvious joke.

Super-Munchkin 2: the Narrow Escape has The Ex-Men who change your sex if you lose the combat.

I guess my point was that they say men think about sex every 8 seconds, but they never say how often women think about it.

That's a myth.

I know it was "reported in the news" but I won't deny it could be folklore. I've had the same funny thought about it. Or worse "Are you thinking about sex now? Now? Now? Now?"

PS - mainly I was addressing the comment that the poster mentioned they always heard it reported for men and not women, whereas I had heard it with both, whither folklore
