Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

The basic concept is thus: Anytime something (or on occasion, someone) in the real world is lost for a significant amount of time (a couple of weeks to a year) it (or he/she) manifests in this "dimension of lost stuff." The longer something remains lost, the more likely it will become a perminent fixture there, and anything that could reasonably be considered "forever lost" in the real world cannot be removed without making a bargain of some kind with the being that rules the dimension (typically this would involve offering him something equally valuable in exchange). The landscape consists of piles and piles of items that get lost in reality all the time: lost car keyes, socks that have gone missing in the dryer, lost eyeglasses and contact lenses, etc. Some areas are even populated by people who have been missing and presumed deceased for a significant period of time in real life, though asking any them what became of them back in RL won't help because they don't remember (whether this is due to those memories being blocked or erased, or because they are infact merely manifestations and not real per se, no one can say with certainty).

The two things I need most are 1) a good name for the dimension, since "The Dimension Of Lost Stuff" becomes quite a mouthful after awhile, and 2) to design an NPC who will be the dimension's lord (not necessarily a full blown write-up, but at least a general discription that includes personality traits, abilities, and alittle bit of background)

Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

Well, the most literal term for this kind of realm would be Limbo. While the name has a strict theological definition, according to my Oxford Dictionary it more generally applies to "A place or condition for the relegation of unwanted or forgotten persons, things, etc."

As for a ruler of the dimension, I'm going to suggest Corvus, Latin for "crow." Besides its ominous connotations, crows, ravens and other corvids are well known for stealing and hoarding attractive objects that catch their eye. There's also an association with tricks and deception, through the Raven of Amerindian myth.

For the ruler, my first thoughts were either

1) mankind's very first utterly forgotten god, originally quite primitive but maybe evolved to sophistication over the millenia trapped in his realm, or

2) a human whose whole life tragically revolved around being mislaid, forgotten about, and lost - until one day he woke to grey nothingness, which gradually started filling with other lost things and people. he identifies with these fellow victims of an uncaring humanity, and tends to blame normal humans - especially the few normal humans who come visiting, looking for stuff - for his colorless life.

He holds a special loathing for those who quip, "Well, at least your feet are always warm."

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

I would look up the greek word for Memory and name the dimension that. Mneme perhaps.

The head mistress would be perhaps the goddess of memory, Mnemosyne. Mnemosyne was the Titan goddess of memory and the inventor of words, daughter of Uranus and Gaea. She is one of the three elder Muses. By Zeus she became the mother of the nine younger Muses. That seems to be all that is known of her, perhaps she has been forgotten as well.

I think that along with the Amelia Aerharts, that there would be many homeless people in this dimension, and a river named Lethe that removes memories.

It might be interesting if the main water source of the dimension is the river, that the properties of it are inherent throughout the water cycle, in rain and fog as well. Slowly sapping Int and Ego (Drain) if you stay too long. In time you only remember the memories associated with the items you brought, and the lost items you refind here.

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

Just to elaborate a bit on my earlier suggestion: Corvus the dimensional ruler may have many crow/raven manifestations in the mythologies of many cultures. As the Raven of the Americas he is a creative and transformative force, but also a trickster and master of deception and chaos. Other aspects are the messenger ravens of Odin, Hugin ("Thought") and Munin ("Memory"). It's his aspect as Munin that particularly prompts Corvus to gather up things and people that have been lost and forgotten by the world, bringing them to Limbo where they can be preserved.

BTW Mayday, excellent suggestions and research for Mnemosyne. Rep for you. :)

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

The Trove of all Realities, (The Trove for short) ruled over by The Collector. He/it happily (even greedily?) collects things and people thought lost, accumulating ever larger stores. He is the representation of the first person irretrevably lost without a trace after society formed. He does not remember his origins, just that he found himself here ages ago, and gradually accumulated stuff.

Possible plot ideas:

What happens if he decides to stop waiting for things to become lost, and starts taking them?

Trade with other dimensions: Perhaps a lost house key from Earth can be used as a magical focus to open a gateway there, something some would trade a great deal for.

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

There may even be places in other worlds or other dimensions...mysterious gateways, forbidden pools, whatever...that lead to this dimension. It's believed that anything or anyone that passes through one of those portals is forever lost, and never returns. This would lead to those portals being used for the disposal of things like hideously powerful cursed artifacts, defeated gods, older brothers between you and the throne and you can't risk a body showing up, etc.

So there could be some really nasty stuff laying around in there... :eg:

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

I had two terrifying thoughts about this place.

First, the number of vastly powerful artifacts and devices that have been lost over the millenia. Perhaps, as suggested earlier, a collection of Deities and elder beings who have been forgotten.

Second, you could call it the Forgotton Realm. Sorry, had to.

Not sure what you're going for here in terms of tone or impact, but as others have said already, the most heartwrench potential comes from all the intangible lost things...lost innocence, lost love, etc.

Because someone will say it, what about lost virginity?

1) mankind's very first utterly forgotten god' date=' originally quite primitive but maybe evolved to sophistication over the millenia trapped in his realm, or [/quote']

You could probably look at the primitive "Venus figures" found among Cro-Magnon remains -- overly exaggerated breasts, hips, buttocks, and pregnant. Probably a primitive fertility goddess.

Or look to the "Bear cult" that's been postulated among early man.

I would look up the greek word for Memory and name the dimension that. Mneme perhaps.

I would suggest rather Nepenthe, although which is a drug not a person, is possibly more in line:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepenthe

I'd also suggest stealing some ideas from Hades/Pluto/Dis Pater -- the Greek/Roman underworld god of the dead and wealth, thought to be the keeper of lost wealth. Often theorized to be Gaiman's forgettable god from American Gods (although I don't agree with that).

Re: Dimension Brainstorming: The Dimension Of Lost Stuff

In the interest of keeping it simple, call it The Lost Dimension. Note that you cannot find it if you are actively looking for it--you must be lost yourself in order to come across it. And not just physically lost, as in not knowing what street you're on, or which way is north or up--it includes emotionally or spiritually lost as well. This would be a place for those heroes going through a crisis of conscience or faith to stumble upon.

The ruler of the The Lost Dimension would be Lord Mnemonic, a Kirby-esque figure of immense size and power who remembers everything that has ever been forgotten. Everything. It takes all of his willpower and then some to keep it all straight in his mind, otherwise it would overwhelm him and drive him insane.

You do NOT want that to happen.
