My Superhero Universe

Superhumans have always existed in one form or another.

In Ancient Times they were thought of as Gods. Some made war on other Gods, others married those without powers. The numbers of those with powers increased, but the power levels fell.

For a time they were hated as Demons or Witches. Some became Conquerors, but only a few were truly immortal, and even fewer were invulnerable. Eventually even the mightiest died.

Some came to the New World and hoped to live out there lives in peace. Most did, until the American Revolution. Then everything changed.

King George III, desperate to keep the Thirteen Colonies, hired Hessian Mercenaries and a Black Forrest Sorcerer to raise an Army of the Dammed. The undead soldiers attacked the town of Kingston, New Jersey, and were about to destroy it when the Eagle, a costumed superhuman appeared and defeated it.

Soon other superhumans sided with the Colonists, using there powers to hold the British at bay. They hid there true identities behind masks and costumes to protect their families from Tory Spies. "Fancy Dress Bandits" was how the English referred to them, but they soon made their mark on history, and thus the costumed superhero was born.

General George Washington, on behalf of a grateful, and independent, nation, offered America as a home for superhumans. Soon they came, and as the United States grew so did the number of superhuman citizens. As America travelled West, so did they to settle the frontier. They fought in all of the wars that followed, and on both sides of the Civil War, and helped make America what it is today.

There were those, however, who didn't really believe they existed. After all, they were never very many of them with really great powers around at any one time. A person could easily go their whole life without seeing someone do something superhuman. Most people believe them only to be legends.

Then it happened.

A runaway dirigible was on a collision course with the Tallest Building in the World, and newsreel camera were there to catch the impending disaster. Then a Superhero arrived to save the day, was caught on film, and everything changed.

Re: My Superhero Universe

That is not dead which can eternal lie.

And with strange æons even death may die.

Patience, it seems, is a virtue. If you're Cthulhu.

PS: the funky ae thing in "aeons" was carried over from the source it copied it from. It's kind of neat. I don't think I'm going to change the way I spell "eons" because of it, but still...

The Great War (1914-1918) had killed off or forced the retirement of a significant portion of the superhuman community. Those who survived were realatively low level superhumans, with perhaps one major power or ability. Germany had been forbidden to have superhumans in it's military, and the Washington Treaty (1921) established limits for all the World's armed forces.

The bulk of World's superhuman strength lay in The League of Heroes. Most were from the United States, but at least one superhuman came from the rest of the major powers. The League, while powerful in theory, was in fact operated on a unanimous vote system. A single "No" vote by any of it's members kept the League from taking action. That was the price paid to have have the League truly international in scope. It also kept the League from entering the conflicts in China, Ethiopia, Spain, or Austria, and thus made another Great War inevitable.

In the year 1938, things finally came to a head. Ultraman was filmed and the existance of superhumans changed from legend to reality. Europe found itself on the brink of another was, and the League of Heroes was there, waiting to see what, if anything, it could do. Then, one night, They came.

My Superhero Universe, Continued

In 1896 inventor Nicola Tesla was showing his latest invention to the H.G. Wells. He called it the Tesla Sphere, a device which could see other worlds. On one of those worlds the strange, hideous creates, had the ability to see Tesla and Wells. Tesla shut down the Sphere, crated it up, and developed a fear of round objects. Wells wrote of the creatures and what they might do in a famous novel.

The creatures had other plans.

The meteor was in space for over forty years, and crashed on the East Coast of the United States, not far from the great metropolis known as Empire City. Ultraman, who had been in the public eye for six months, and who had developed a good relationship with the authorities, was among those who investigated the impact site.

The three war machines that sprung forth from the crater began to attack the State Police and National Guard personal. Ultraman launched a counter-attack, giving the other humans time to get clear. Against one, or two, of the alien war machines he would have been victorious, but three stacked the odds against Ultraman. The Man of the Future destroyed one of the war machines, but was stunned by a combined blast from the death rays of the other two.

Suddenly one of the two war machines was struck by a beam of energy. Then it was hit again, and again. Then something human shaped struck the damaged area of the war machine, adn flew out the otherside just before it exploded. While the last war machine was distracted Ultraman recovered, and turned it to junk.

He turned to thank his rescuer, and discovered it was a woman. The press gathered around them, and to the surprise of both heroes the whole battle had been filmed. Now superhumans had gone from legends, to reality, to heroes.

Appearance: Ultraman is a tall, handsome man in his late twenties with blonde hair and blue eyes. His costume is red, white, and blue, with a large U on his chest.

Background: Bradley Taylor received his powers from his mother, who never used her powers due to illness. He used his abilities secretly in order to find his kidnapped sister, and learned exactly what he could do. Bradley took over the family business when his father began a political career. Ultraman first came to the attention of the world when he was filmed by newsreel camera preventing the destruction of the Taylor Tower which was in the path of a runaway diridgible. His action during the Alien Invasion made him a true hero in the eyes of the World. Despite this, having inherited his wealth and powers, both Bradley Taylor and Ultraman never stop trying to prove themselves worthy of the trust they have been given.

Powers: Ultraman can lift a maximum of 100 tons, fly several times the speed of sound, and can survive in almost any hostile environment. He also has hightened vision and hearing, and has x-ray and heat vision. When he knows it's coming he can deflect almost any ranged attack. When he appeared he was considered the most powerful superhuman in the world. Atlantium is a glowing golden crystal like substance that was used to power the Alien War Machines, and Ultraman's prolonged exposure to it during the fight make his susceptible to it. His weakness to magic comes from the spell that made his mother too ill to use her abilities.

My Superhero Universe, Continued

Ultraman and Starlet became the first modern superheroes. Starlet was more then a little upset to see her name in the paper. She had told the reporters her name was "Starlight", but all they could see was a blonde. The irony was that she was a starlet.

Leslie North was the daughter of a famous astronomer and an equally famous stage actress. She had made several motion pictures, and took some time off to study the stars at a remote observatory. A meteor strike near by caused her to rush into the night to find the impact site. She did, just in time to be bathed in weird radiation when the meteor exploded. To her delight she discovered she had superpowers, and designed a costume. She was in Empire City hoping to meet up with Ultraman when the Alien Invasion took place.

While the League of Heroes was in Europe debating what course of action to take, the legendary heroes Captain Freedom and Maiden America flew to Empire City from Washington, D.C.. They were impressed with the pair of new heroes, and the four of them talked about the future.

Matthew Easton Fremont was from a long line of Marines. One of them was at Tripoli in 1803, and saved the life of an elderly wizard. He gave the young Marine a magic word which would transform him into a superhuman. That man, Matthew's grandfather, used it do defend America, as did his son. Now Matthew had the power, and after his service in the Great War was elected to the United States Senate. During his career as Captain Freedom he met a brilliant young woman who would become . . .

Maiden America, Dr. Madeline Ames Fremont, M.D., daughter of the inventor of a super-soldier formula that she took to prevent falling into German hands during the war. She gained superhuman abilities, and fought side by side with Captain Freedom during the war. She was a Navy Nurse, he a Marine Captain, and both worked directly for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the War.

Twenty Years later that man was President of the United States.

Re: My Superhero Universe

Looks like a fun setting.

So where on the East Coast is Empire City? Is it a replacement for a real place (the GOO supers game simply used New York City but called it Empire City)? Or is it cut from the Metropolis and Gotham models?

(My own Empire City is in Delaware, about where some sources have put Metropolis.)

My Superhero Universe: Powers and Abilities

Ultraman is primarily a flying brick with a multipower that allows him to boost his abilities. His Armor and EB are both 30 Points, his regular and supersonic flight are both 20 points, and the rest of his abilities are 10 points each. Tactically he's armor up, land, and run to the target if on the ground, and pound with STR 60. The EB is a secondary attack used rarely because of the power costs.

Maiden America is a ground pounding brick with good skills and political connnections.

Captain Freedom is the best fighter, without much raw power but with the experience to make him formidible.

Starlet is well balanced, able to strike from range as well as HTH. Her strength comes as a surprise to those who don't know her and think she's just another Energy Projector.

Re: My Superhero Universe

Obscure' date=' huh? Is he inspired by someone other than Superman or Captain Marvel, or are you having me on?[/quote']

The name, at least, has impeccable Golden Age credentials.

The power set described had nothing much to do with that character, but is perfectly acceptable for a Superman-like character, which is what Cassandra clearly intended.

I've read some Ultra-Man stories. Yawn. The problem wasn't that they were pulp SF, not superhero stories, but that they were very pedestrian examples of that genre.
