How to build your own Iron Man suit — for real

Popular Mechanics did a nice article on this very subject about a month ago.

It included references not only to the Japanese nurse exoskeleton (it helps nurses carry patients in case of emergencies), but the US Army "super-soldier" prototype they're working on.

I think the real challenge on this type of thing would be getting the feedback right, so that when you try to take a step, the servo motors don't snap your femur.

That's all just fine tuning of bells and whistles.

The one thing the movie really got right was the POWER-DENSITY requirement.

If we could build a power storage devices with the mass to power ratio like the one Tony Stark comes up with in the movie we could be sending ships the size of nuclear submarines to the orbit of Pluto with a 1-G thrust for the whole trip (makes it a matter of days if I'm not mistaken).

I had a power-suit character once with a weak shoulder because she'd accidentally pulled the shoulder open during an upgrade test. (It was mostly a backstory thing, but it came up in gameplay when someone used the Analyze: Martial Arts skill.)

Found the magazine I was talking about. It's Popular Science, May 2008. It has a CGI picture of the exo-equipped soldier on the cover.

The article features the Sarcos suit. Definitely potential source material. :)

Couldn't Tony make himself even more uber-rich, not to mention a hero, if he patented and sold that technology?

I've been obsessing over real powered armour suits for quite a while now. I was grinning like a fool all through the "Iron Man" movie because it looked like the comic had come to life. It is now officially my favourite comic book movie. :D :D

I really liked the Iron Monger suit as well - Iron Man done as a gundam. :)

I'm developing a character called Rebecca Westmeyer who sets up a company specialising in robotics/cybernetics and armour specifically to develop a powered armour suit like the Iron Man suit.

Now - has anybody built a weapon systems that can be incorporated? Say a laser-directed shoulder mounted plasma arc slaved to one's head movements?

Mike O'Dwyer's MetalStorm technology would be useful as well.

I saw a drawing of a suit once with twin cold-launched SAMs mounted in a backpack. THAT would rock.

Risking a slapping - check out the Tau Empire Codex from Warhammer 40K. The Tau have some very cool stuff that can serve as source material.

Well, the technology to move massive object inexpensively to and in space would be a boon to society.

It would have the potential to be a great danger.

It's been estimated that one small asteroid from between Jupiter and Mars could contain a years worth of the entire planet's use of metal.

Moving the asteroid near Earth would certainly make mining it easier.

It also would make it very easy to DROP IT (or part of it) on something (like a CITY) and not worry about any radiation fallout.

Opening up access to space is probably not something we are going to be ready for until we have an effective world government of some type.

Gee, that looks like a lot of work. It would be a lot easier just to do it like this:

1. Get a suit of armor. Full plate is ideal.

2. Paint it red and gold. Decorate to your personal tastes.

3. Attach a jet pack to the back. Putting jets in the boots sounds painful.

4. Attach lasers to the forearms or wrists; attaching them to the palms sounds dangerous.

5. Build a secret base so nobody knows your secret.

6. Hire an attractive to cover up for you.

7. Get out there and fight evil!
