Any D6 recommendations?

BeerFest

Recommended Posts

Mummy has asked me what I want for Xmas.

I fancy some special dice.

I am thinking metal or stone or whatever.

One preference I have is that they should be easy to read, no dwarven runes, roman numerals, without more Dr Who symbology than the number itself and without needing KS: Elven 18- to decode them.

Does anyone have any recommendations or dice that they love?

Cheers.

I dig metal dice myself.  They just feel good, you know?  :)

Can't explain it.  They just feel good.  You don't have to get fancy or expensive either, if you're sticking with D6: there are some surprisingly inexpensive options on Amazon, most of them imported and either heat-treated nickel or heat-treated steel-- this makes them reasonably priced, but colors them (via heat treating) to close approximations of other metals.  As much as I _love_ copper, don't get actual copper dice.  Even if they are used so much that tarnishing is a non-issue for you, they leave a stink on you that doesn't just wash off.

The cheaper ones don't have nice rounded corners, but still: they feel good, and they don't roll all over the table.

I'm also fond of wooden dice-- a bit light, so be careful how you roll them, but they have a pleasing sound as they spill across the table.

What can I say?  I'm a pretty simple guy.

I had a player chip and dent an expensive dining table with their metal dice once upon a time, so no metal dice are allowed at my gaming table anymore.  :(

The HERO Dice are cool, but a bit on the large size. I have a couple of sets, and they're useful for players who struggle with counting pips of body.

Personally, I have a bunch of nice Chessex speckled dice, 16mm with pips. They come in bricks of 12 for about $10; get a few different colors and you're set. Some people like 12mm (the small d6's), but I find them to be annoyingly small and they go all over the place when you roll them.  The 16mm pip dice are easy to read, have a good heft, rounded corners, and last forever. I bought most of mine over 20 years ago when I was playing a lot of Warhammer 40k and have used them for all kinds of games over the years. You can get them on amazon or ebay (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=chessex+speckled+16mm+d6&_sacat=0) for reasonable prices.

If you just want a bunch of dice, Chessex sells a random assortment by the pound, but it is literally a "mixed bag" with no aesthetic considerations. I wouldn't recommend it personally as some of the dice are quite boring opaques, but my wife buys them sometimes for her classes (she teaches math) and you do get a bunch of dice that way. Amazon carries them, with free delivery for Prime, so it is pretty economical. There's a d6 only bag, and a random polyhedral bag.

The only special HERO dice to me are the ones that came in the box sets. I've always called them my Champions dice, and I still use them when traveling since I can fit a lot of them in a small bag.

Otherwise, my only rule for HERO dice is that they must have pips. The ones with numerals on them just don't feel HEROish to me. :)

I agree with No Metal.  I find they're also LOUD on most tabletops.  I also prefer rounded corners to sharply squared corners.  Last:  if they're translucent, then I prefer them to be darker rather than lighter.  Might be just me but I find overly transparent harder to read quickly.

For games where I'm consistently rolling 10+ dice, I actually prefer smaller ones.  Think I had a bunch of 8mm.  Otherwise...yeah, Chessex has always been good.

Hmm, here's a site to consider:

One other thing:  for killing attacks, 1 die that's clearly different from the others, to be the stun mult.  (Unless your KAs are 1 die + a lot.)

Las Vegas Dice.   Get the "retired" dice from the Casino gift shop. Statistically neutral and large in your hand, and clear like Jello. I used to have a cigar box of red and green dice, 12d6 hay makers were never so satisfying.

Yeah, I played with a guy once who used "vegas" dice. He really liked them. They didn't do it for me aesthetically / tactilely, but they were definitely quality dice.

Thanks for Hero Dice tip, Mumsikins the darling (hehe I'm approximately 16d6 old) has a larger budget than $5, and I want something special, lifetime dice.

Thanks for the warnings about metal and copper. We play on a big hex gaming mat so no problem with metal.

I have some Chessex dice and they look and feel plasticy.

I'm thinking special dice, that make my fellow gamers go "woo! They're nice!"

Thanks in advance,

I'm not sure how "statistically neutral" they are after they're canceled. I have a bunch of casino dice, but I never use them for games, just collecting. For those who really must have them, I'd recommend a few sticks of  unused casino quality dice. Here's a link to the Gamblers General Store: https://www.gamblersgeneralstore.com/dice/casino-quality-dice

I have several sets of Q-Workshop dice, including some in metal. The most readable are the Dwarven and the Tech dice. I roll metal dice in a special felt-lined tray to protect the tabletop.

The vast majority of my 6-sided dice are Chessex. I've been using more of the 16mm dice lately, but I have a large number of the 12mm dice. They generally have a good weight, and roll well. (non-metal Q-Workshop dice can feel a little light).

The Hero dice are good, but tend to be a bit large and heavy. I use them occasionally, when I remember to bring them.

The Tech metal 6-siders are to the left in the picture, with the Dwarven metal 6-siders next to them. Next to the blue polyhedrals are some metal Steampunk dice, which are a little bit less readable unless the light's good.

In 5th and earlier ed., I like using casino dice for stun mods.  The red color was a nice contrasting point.  As general dice for gaming, they are a bit too large for me.  I generally find 12mm  dice the best for Champions if you roll a lot of dice.  I usually select a high contrast color scheme (my eyes are pretty bad).  In 6th, I also like getting a 1/2d6 specifically for stun mods.

I've found this also very useful:

Ooh! thank you! I can order new dice (Those Casino dice have a tendency to walk off on their own.)

My eyes are not the greatest, but I have meaty big hands, so the size and sharpness do not bother me to roll.  Even the big numbers. The tiny dice in a cube  for off table rolling is a brilliant idea!

I have a corkboard I use.  Just a five-dollar cheapo. I packed the back of the plastic frame with some old strips of high density foam cut from roofing closure strips to both muffle that heinous rattle unique to cheap plastic and to prevent the tray from scuffing someone's table.  It's nice, very quiet, cheap, doubles as a coaster, and protects the various tables I play on.

Except mine.  My gaming table is the very same table my kids learned to eat at, learned how to do fun crafty projects, from drawing and painting to light repair and woodwork.

I am rather ambivalent about putting more dents in that table. Unless you actually crack it, no one's going to notice.

Visit shapeways.com and search for 'dice'.  You can have all sorts of them 3d printed in a variety of coloured polymers as well as a range of metals.

You guys must not have looked around very much on shapeways.com.  Here are some examples of what's possible, there...

Open Hollow Polyhedral Dice Set in Bronze Polished Steel

Steampunk Gear Dice Set in Bronze Polished Steel

Celtic Dice Set in Bronze Polished Steel

All of the above were found among the results of a search for 'polyhedral dice set' on the shapeways.com site.  You can, of course, adjust the material you'd like for a given set … and they have a wide range of materials.  Play with the materials on a die or dice set you like and you can end up with something tailored specifically to your taste and budget.

IF you only want to look for d6's, then you could simply search for 'd6 dice set' and scope those results … or just search for 'dice', narrow it to d6's you like, and buy multiples of a single die that you like.
Celtic D6 x5 Dice Set (this one looks really good in polished nickel steel, IMHO)

Crystal-Inspired d6 (this one also looks really good in polished nickel steel, IMHO)

No need to stick to plain old boring chessex dice or pointy-edged dice or what have you.  I'd think the original poster could find pretty much anything that he could envision for Mummy, there... especially since he seems to be looking for 'special dice' (to use his exact words) but also wants them to be 'easy to read, [having] no dwarven runes, roman numerals, without more Dr Who symbology than the number itself and without needing KS: Elven 18- to decode them'.  Since the goal seems to be somewhere between 'special' and not-so-special-soas-to-stand-out-like-runes-or-roman-numerals-etc. … and since we don't read minds … it's probably best that the original poster go pick out exactly what he has in mind … something to which shapeways.com caters.

P.S. I am in no way affiliated with shapeways.com.  I'm just a past, satisfied customer.
