If I play characters with magic, I usually make them multiclass, usually fighter/mages. That's probably because I grew up with B/X and I liked to play elves because of the Silmarillion. I rarely play a pure spellcaster. Clerics never held much appeal for me.
On another note, how feasible would airships be in a fantasy campaign? Even if magic is used to create lift, there are so many large flying creatures around that the airships could become targets.

I understand why Gygax preferred fighters; most of the stuff he read had fighters as the heroes, while magic-users were usually villains. I grew up on mythology and Arthurian legends, where the main heroes were warriors. That's probably why I prefer to play fighters as well.

One way to spice up solo play is to run a monster vs. monster combat. In my campaign, rocs and griffons are natural enemies, so when they meet they fight to the death. I just ran a such a battle. The roc was winning for most of the fight, but the griffon got in a few good hits afterwards, and won initiative in the last round. I allowed the roc a dying blow, and the griffon survived with 2 hit points remaining.

I had this dream about a portal where supernatural beings of light and fire were looking into the world. Two figures, one male and one female, were looking out when a third being (male) with fiery wings stood behind them. They weren't demons since I could tell they weren't evil.
