    I'll have to google that.

Done. the state as a whole reported as 87% white according to the 2010 census. Of those, 78% claimed they were neither Hispanic or Latino, African-Americans account for only about 2%.The highest concentration of African-Americans is naturally in Portland, but they still only account for under 6% of Portanders. By contrast, Portland itself is a little over 70% white.

I find those statistics rather alarming, actually. Populations that relatively small are virtually guaranteed to be socially and politically marginalized.  Not only is poverty chronic among marginalized populations, but a great deal of effort is being put into keeping them poor and marginalized. In Portland, for example, both the City Council and the County Commission are lily white, and the five City Councilors (including the Mayor) are all upper-middle-class from the prosperous West Side. Portland's charter mandates that all five members be elected At-Large as opposed to representing districts.

In a more lighthearted news vein... gotta love Kareem making the geeky super-hero references!

I keep looking for a place to fit
Where I can speak my mind
I've been trying hard to find the people
    That I won't leave behind
    They say I got brains
But they ain't doing me no good
    I wish they could

Each time things start to happen again
I think I got something good goin' for myself
    But what goes wrong

    Sometimes I feel very sad
    Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)
    Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)

I guess I just wasn't made for these times

Every time I get the inspiration
    To go change things around
No one wants to help me look for places
Where new things might be found
Where can I turn when my fair weather friends cop out
    What's it all about

Each time things start to happen again
I think I got something good goin' for myself
    But what goes wrong

    Sometimes I feel very sad
    Sometimes I feel very sad
(Can't find nothin' I can put my heart and soul into)

In my opinion, steroids for medicinal uses (to heal faster from injury or to maintain health through stress and wear of a 162+ game season) should be legal.  Highly regulated and controlled, but legal.

There is very little that is less patriotic than compulsory patriotism. This is just another example of how little the NFL values its athletes.

On this day in 1895, actor-manager Henry Irving became the first actor knighted in England by Queen Victoria. Although artists had been knighted previously, Irving's honor started the long tradition of performers (who were previously viewed as beneath "proper" society) being on the annual Honors List.

Last week for my wife's birthday, we went to the Fathom Events playing of Labyrinth. Still a fun movie to see and was great to see on big screen for first time in 30 years. Even funner, they put an episode of the Storyteller, the Jim Henson series relating stories and fairy tales from around the world with John Hurt doing the storytelling.

A huge part of the problems is that too many white people are utterly paranoid about other races and bring the police into the equation when they are clearly not needed (including many situations where no crime at all has occurred). It even happens at Yale, an Ivy League university where students should know better.

One of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen, but sadly only on small screens. I would dearly love to see it on a big one (I finally crossed a big-screen screening my My Neighbor Totoro off the list of things I had to experience in my lifetime. Even better, I got to see it with my mother. It was an incredible experience.)

vegas is through to the Conference Finals.

Let that sink in for a moment. An expansion team representing a city that thinks ice is something you put in a shot glass is in the Conference Finals. The could be playing Nashville or Winnipeg there. If it's the later, I'm not sure who I'd back.

It's an incredible story that keeps getting bigger with each goal scored. I picked them to finish dead last in the Pacific, and not to even get a whiff of the postseason for another four years. Now they're eight wins away from winning the Stanley Cup.

But humanity keeps building in their vicinity, because the stuff they spread over the land makes for awesomely fertile soil. Besides, there's not a lot of terra firma across the Pacific, so you have to build where Nature provides it.

And yet there's still no shortage of people moving in around the San Andreas Fault.

I have a different struggle. I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy last week, and trying to adjust my diet has been challenging. The first weekend, with several failures to find something edible, had me thinking "I never want to eat again!". It's not quite that bad now (intellectually I realize I have no choice), but it still isn't fun. And I spent a lot of money I really don't have getting GF stuff that's very difficult for me to eat. Gluten, after all, is what makes bread and pasta taste good.\

So I don't really know what my new routine will be. I have a doctor's appointment next week to go over the issue, a training in two weeks at Natural Grocers, and a lot of stuff I'm rearching online to see what I can make that I have a chance of liking. I need a reorganized kitchen, so I can work there -- ordering out is not really an option on m current budget, although I want to try the GF pizza agt Papa Murphy's because they worked out those issues (at least partially).

So I don't have a real routine yet. I'm working on it.
