  1. Been a while, still need to catch up on all the responses.

Point creep was one of the reasons for this thread.  I've seen 700+ point characters crammed into 250 by use of limitations.

Powers with eight -1/4 limitations cost a third normal, but are rarely affected, compared to a single -2 that might literally be usable once in a blue moon.

  2. Inspired by my initial thought of what RDU Neil's thread was about and something that was touched on by several in that thread.

Stacking limitations has its issues - too much bang for the buck, it it really worth that much, clutter on the sheet, etc.  I'd like to open this discussion in a different vein than the previous one and not muddy those waters.

I'm not suggesting reducing limitations to one; the book's limitations are fine, but you're only allowed to use (or get points from) one limitation per power.

I miss the old City Of Heroes costume generator.

It's actually still available.  And some enterprising souls have turned the game client into a chat client.  No monsters though.

Google for Icon, ParagonChat and/or Titan Network.

  4. My PC was trying to break something critical (to the survival of the world, IIRC), and managed an excellent EGO roll to push her STR up to 25.

Yahtzee.  Five ones hit the table.

I honestly cannot remember how the session went after that, Stunned.

    Chris.

  5. I've become interested in the Nano Metalfigs line from Jada Toys.  Unfortunately, there is one line they released which isn't available in the US.

This link to an Australian site shows the entire wave, and they are also carried by Toys R Us and Big W stores.

I'll cover costs and shipping for someone to do the legwork.

    Chris.

  6. You always had to build it.

In 4E, Damage Shield was a +1/2 Advantage on an attack power.

In 5E, Damage Shield was a +1/2 Advantage on an attack power.  By RAW, you usually had to add the +1 Continuous Advantage, but a lot of people didn't agree.

In 6E,Area of Effect Personal Surface was a +1/4 advantage on an attack power.

  7. Quad is a Brick, strong and heavily defended.  He can split into two Doubles, each a little less strong, less well defended, but faster and more agile.  Each Double can split into two Singles, each a little less strong and well defended, but faster and more agile.  Yes, there is an influence from the City of Heroes's Malta robots.

Player/GM contract requires them to be fully built - no hand waving.  Quad is a 400 point 5ER character.  I believe I can make Double as a 325 point Duplicate, and Single as a 250 point Duplicate.

Some of Quads powers (STR and Defenses) would have a Not While Duplicated limitation - at what value, -1?

Double will have a similar set of Not While Duplicated powers, but also a set of Only While Duplicated powers - also a -1 Limitation?

Right now, all three are scrapper types, with Quad a brick and Singles close to Speedster.  If I can scrape up the points, maybe give each a Blast.  Any other suggested powers or better names?

    Chris.

It seems like there's going to be a lot of material about how to use the system in play, so it should be a good system to introduce people to Champions/Hero, or for quicker things like pick up or side games at cons, or whenever you don't want to delve into more detailed builds for things. It's definitely more limited in crunchy options for character definition than 4th edition and up. It seems to be taking a more narrative approach to things, rather than explicitly defining everything a character can do. I think one way to use it would be to take it as a base and add in some elements from 4th edition, to create a quick rules light version of Hero for stuff like pick up games or PEBM games, etc.

Having read the playtest document, this is what this Kickstarter is. It's not about rules or settings.  It's about how to PLAY.

There are two challenges I would like to overcome before running a StarHero campaign.

The first is the constant wrestling match between the SciFi genre and Sir Isaac Newton. I like the realistic movement endurance rule and the realistic space acceleration rule, but I don't believe they combine logically enough for my taste. Sure, accelerating a big ship costs more endurance, but it still costs 15 points to buy 15m of flight. Combined with the maximum velocities per turn that the book suggests, there is no reason why a battleship wouldn't buy the same acceleration as a fighter. This makes interceptors unable to, well, intercept... I'm toying around with a few ideas to fix this, but maybe the community already has one? Right now my leading idea is to enforce an adder on the flight power somehow based on the vehicles size - that way flight costs more on bigger ships, and more endurance. This should artificially cause larger ships to accelerate slower than smaller ones. The reason I believe this works is due to the second rule I am toying around with:

Upper limit of vehicle cost based on size. I was talking to a USAF friend of mine about how modern military vehicles are designed. I summation, the #1 restraint of a modern military vehicle is size. Sure, you can make a battleship go 50 knots, but half of its space and displacement will be utilized by engines. If you want a fast ship with limited projection capabilities, great! But most modern militaries would choose a larger radius of efficacy over raw speed, so smaller engines and more space for guns and planes. I was crunching some numbers on the example vehicles, and saw that they all spent between 8 and 19 times more points on capabilities than size. So I set ship class sizes (DD 13, CR 16 etc...) and simply said a ship can only spend 15x more on powers than on size. I think this will adequately represent space limitations on ships. And the starter ship for my PCs it's only 5x or 10x to represent being a run down, old POS ship.

Does this approach make any sense? What other tools and mechanics have been used to balance and normalize ships?

    Thanks!

Where are these rules for realistic movement endurance and realistic space acceleration?

I have previously posted some of my design rules for a Master of Orion space game, where starship design can play a significant part.  I'm still monkeying around with this particular issue, but have some thoughts on engine mass as percentage of ship size, and dividing maximum flight by vehicle size to asjust results more than just "no more than X flight" rules.

    Chris.

  10. I would say 'No', because a normal damage attack already does Body damage, with or without Penetrating.  Does Body only allows attacks that normally deal no Body damage to do so.

So the question becomes, What are you trying to accomplish by adding Does Body?  If you're looking to make a Normal Damage attack do Penetrating Body instead of Penetrating Stun, that won't do.  You'll need to use a Killing Attack with Penetrating to do Penetrating Body.

    Chris.

  11. Jada toys has released Nano Metalfigs, a line of 1.5 inch die-cast minis, with DC, Marvel, Street Fighter, WWE and Harry Potter lines.  Each fig runs 97 cents at Walmart, and there are various 5, 10 and 20 packs available.

  13. Need more data.

Define "three tries at something." Getting three tries to make a to-hit roll is one thing, three tries at rolling damage for it is something else. Three tries at each Skill roll?

Three tries in what kind of time frame? In many situations it is not unusual for a character to get MORE than three tries at something if necessary. In combat, for example, a hero can try to hit the villian, or try to stun or knock out the villain, as many times as it takes, unless and until either the villain is taken out or the hero is. So do you mean "Three tries per phase?" where a normal character only gets one?

    Lucius Alexander

This palindromedary tagline is too short

Yes.  The basic concept is three tries at anything/everything she does.  Anything someone else gets one try at, she gets three and takes the best.

I like the Overall sSkill Leevels idea and will use it.

I understand the Extra Time idea, but probably won't use it.

I'll have to dig up or borrow a copy of APG2.

I'm also thinking of an Images power so people see her making three attempts.

    Chris.

    Palindromedary tagline needs three humps

  14. I'm trying to build a supervillain for my fairy tale themed team.  Goldilocks should have the power to make three tries at something and keep the one that works best.

The question is, how would I build such an ability?  Yes, I'm aware it could be extremely powerful - and should be equally expensive.

    Chris.

  15. Yeah, I need to get out my old Illuminati game and play it.

On the up side, my kids found my old Evil Geniuses For A Better Tomorrow license plate holder, so that is now on my car. I think I am now safe from robot sea monsters.

Meanwhile, I can work on this

    terrest_jpg.jpg

Ouch.  That's gonna leave a mark...

  16. This is all a work in progress.

Lately I've been working on Skill Sets.  All characters will have 25 Points to begin with.  10 Points will be based on the type of Power or Character they are.  15 Points will be Occupational or skills they would use as a Superhero archetype.

I have been, in my Copious Spare Time been saving these to a file to collate into a single document.

    Chris.
