Sketchpad got a reaction from Gauntlet in Could Rules for Hero Gaming System Be Getting To Complicated?
I think there could be some streamlining and modernization of the game, but I don't know how simpler it would make Hero. For me, I think the game could use better GM and Player tools beyond HeroDesigner. Like having more accessible sheets for maneuvers, or tables that make the  gamemaster's job a bit easier.

In the official books, my group hated PSI. I ran Mind Games once, and then had them pop up here and there to haunt the heroes. It was a great time for all.

Yes, and in previous write-ups that was annotated. However, player feedback has been along the lines of, "Why is this listed when I'm not going to use it in the scenario?"

This goes back to the ongoing issue I've had in trying to introduce Champions to new players so they're not overwhelmed with information. If I listed every detail such as professional rivalries, access to S.H.I.E.L.D., bases, etc. that Wasp had, the players would have information overload while trying read the sheet.

Even if I listed it, someone is going to say, "Shouldn't Henry Pym be listed as a contact? Or Nick Fury? Or, since Janet Van Dyne and Henry Pym are divorced, shouldn't he be listed as a Rivalry now instead of a Social Complication?" At some point I have stop and have something that a player can use for a scenario that will hopefully generate future interest in Champions/Hero System.

I may have mentioned here and there a Star Wars Hero game... I've now been running it for a couple of months.  I've written up a document for it, which contains rules info and session write-ups, here.

When I built a similar character I started by creating the base character without the armor.   I then used that form as the base for all the other forms.   I included all the perks like wealth and contacts because the character without the armor could set up situations where they could be used by the armored form.  How hard is it going to be for “Tony Stark” to buy something and say Iron Man is going to pick it up or use it?  Likewise Tony could tell his contact to give the information to Iron Man.  What it comes down to is the form able to take advantage of the perk?
For the unarmed form I did give it some minor control of machines.   The character had an implant in his head that could control machines; he had to use the implant to control the armor when he wore it.  So, if he had the armor on, he could not control machines.

Could also be based on the special effect. What if you have power armor that has a mental connection to you giving you additional skills, maybe even making a change to your personality.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, was just stating that it all depends on the actual character.

It depends on the special effect of the multiform.  When Bruce Banner changes into the Hulk he loses his scientific skills and memories.  When Tony Stark put on different armor he is still Tony Stark.  Hulk does not need to buy Bruce’s skills, But Iron Man should have all of Tony’s skills and memories.

The big one I was referring to was in the Windcards series. I forgot the character's name, but he took a drug combo to make him completely change into someone else with powers and completely different personality and memories.

Multiform can be used for many different things, and in some cases, they will have different skills.  But that is not the case for changing a suit of armor.   In this case the same person is inside every suit of armor.

Even in the case of something like lycanthropy some perks should still be paid by all forms.   Does your contact that you asked for a favor stop doing that favor when you turn into a bear only to start doing again when you turn back to a human?  If your human form has a follower that you have watching something, does he disappear when you are in bear form?  If the perk can provide ongoing assistance or will take time to accomplish that perk should be paid for in all forms.

Of course the multi-forms don't necessarily have to have the same skills or even memories. Plenty of individuals in comics who when they change they are a completely different individual. Even memories and personality being different. I have a character that I love that turns into a Bear, now while he might have some of the knowledge of his human self, friends and etc., he becomes a bear with the mindset of a bear.

Did this ages ago.  All the suits were OIF, all the suits were around 275.  The limitation on the suit is that only could change the multiform when in the Garage.  The basic chassis was similar and in most cases gave me the same speed and dex, with one being faster, and two being slower and more tankie. Some weapons were modular but had the same garage limitations.  The suits were built for various environments, from Vacuum and hig radiation, to deep ocean, and places in between. One suit was a sensor suite with only small arms.  It worked fine, and lots of fun was had. But then I was always the powered armored suit guy in our gaming group.

Multiform can be used without being abusive but there should be some limits.  All forms should have the skills and perks.  Why does putting on a suit of armor cause Tony Stark to forget all his scientific knowledge or cause his business to disappear?  It does not so the character should pay for them.  Even if the business or other perk cannot be directly used by the character they can still provide ongoing benefits.   When Tony Stark gives an order to Stark Enterprises they will still keep working on it when he is in the armor.

I would also put a limit on the number of suits to keep it from being abused.

My questions would be, what is it about this limitation that limits what you can do.  Personally, I dont think there is a huge limitiation on the fact that they are all armoured suits.  Possibly if that limitation meant that they are all (at least) IIF and that the focus is trashable if someone does enough damage, then I would be up for the limitation.

There would be some interest if the most relevant suit (the HulkBuster) got busted and then he had to go fight the Hulk with whatever suit happened to be available.  🙂

I almost always end up coming back to Champions.  I have run other games, Castles and Crusades, Amazing Adventures, BASH and many others but I eventually end up going back to my first love.

It wasn't my first RPG, Holmes D&D was that, or my first Superhero RPG, Villains and Vigilantes was that but I still end up getting Champions because it is the only crunchy game that I comfortable with.  Running the game just feels like putting on a pair of comfortable shoes.

When making my second character, a "Batman with darkness powers" hero, I tossed caution to the wind and took as many hunteds that I could. Name the organization, he was hunted by them at 14-, both criminal and law enforcement! He had all the perks... a nice HQ, some cool powers, martial arts... and a secret identity. Then the GM decided that ALL of his hunteds showed up at once. Outside the HQ. Oof!

If it was "Just to Calm Wolverine"? I would see that as a -2 at least. It's VERY specific and only affects one being.

That's what I've always done as well. Often times, I ask the player to create a "spell" list (it's not always spells) that they can draw from, and those are the powers and abilities they can use in a session. They don't feel like working on stuff, they're stuck with what they have.

So, it should cost the same to turn a targets' hair fluorescent purple as it does to turn them into a statue or a mushroom?  I can see reducing it to Minor and Severe because the spread of effects under Moderate is so great but there should be categories.

Damage Negation is the easiest way to grant immunity to a specific level of DC's that exists in the game. Its utility was diminished somewhat because the STUN Multiplier was fixed. It might be a tad overpriced (I'd set it at 4 points per DC stopped.) but it has plenty of utility.

In practice what I tend to do with VPPs is have a list of example powers written up before the game (ideally the player can do this, but if not there's always good old me), and then while the player can theoretically improvise any power in combat, if they start to slow down working out specifics it just defaults to one of the example powers. The option to make literally anything is there for players who are more confident with the rules, but we have a backup in case something goes wrong.
