  1. Thanks for reminding me...now I have to watch the DVD
  2. After starting this thread and going through some of my old campaign materials, I remembered a pair I came up with: Hell & Highwater: A Harley Davidson/Marlboro Man pair with fire and water powers, respectively.
  3. I'd give Elwood a Gadgeteering skill and a VPP based on an OAF "Battered Briefcase", based on him always having the right tool for the job at hand (including a harmonica ). I'd also figure out a 75% Damage Reduction, UBO, Only Applies To The Vehicle He's Driving to reflect the unbelievable abuse inflicted on the Bluesmobile. And a monsterous Combat Driving and CK: Chicago roll. Joliet Jake would have PRE bonus vs. People he has met before (he seemed to be able to convince people from his past to do anything ie the band, Carrie Fisher) and a huge Persuasion skill. Disads would be easy: Psych Lim: Mission From God, Hunted by Illinois Law Enforcement, Illinois Nazi Party, the Good Ole Boys. Social Lim: Ex Cons (Elwood mentions prison food when speaking with Matt 'Guitar' Murphy, so its safe to assume he's done time.)
  4. The Good Guys #11: "Tourist Season" Fresh off the defeat of the newly formed COIL and their insidious Ophidian Plague (collected in the trade paperback The Good Guys: Sharper Than A Serpent's Tooth), the team and Las Vegas is back to business as usual. Its the height of tourist season, and that means trouble as everyone's favorite blue-skinned intergalatic badman Vandal decides to try his luck in the casinos. And what is the mysterious vigilante El Lobo doing in town? Plus more on Valance's mysterious past, Taskforce's rampant spending of Wingman's money and the team finally deciding on a name...or will they? On sale March 1, only from Mighty Metro Comics!
  5. Re: Re: Teen Heroes & Static Shock It was actually under the Milestone imprint, which was the first African-American owned comic company. It was unfortunately much overlooked by the glut of new companies and imprints in the comics frenzied 90s. I am a huge fan of both the comics (I have a near complete run) and the toon. I really like the way that Virgil has developed in both his powers and his character over the course of the show. I was pleasantly surprised by a recent episode that featured The Nightbreed, which had characters from Milestone's team book, The Blood Syndicate, my favorite of the line.
  6. Something Latin maybe? Soror Mortis (Sister Death)
  7. One of my players had a character who was exactly like the one Supreme described (Light Based Powers/Mysterious Character). One of his gags he would dim all the lights before he walked into a henchman bar/warehouse hideout/etc to create an ominous atmosphere. It got to the point where thugs were catching on and they knew when the lights dimmed..."Oh crap, its Dr. Equinox!" I think he did it with a CE with a lined PRE bonus, Only in Artificially Lit Areas or something like that.
  8. One of my old GMs had a knack with coming up with 'themed' duos, usually based on a common phrase. Some examples: Needle & Thread: Two low level villains that used flechette and monofilament weaponry, respectively. Mover & Shaker: Speedster/Vibrational EBer Sturm & Drang: Weather Manipulator/Brick and my personal fave: El Gallo & El Toro: A Capoera MA and a Brick, which translates into Cock & Bull 4th Edition Mutant File also featured Null & Void. Anyone have any other duos they'd like to share?
  9. Also falling into the "Cranky Old Hero Player" category , I totally agree with KA. Its not a Limitation unless it limits you in some way. I also agree with everyone else's comments about sfx. Handcuffs would prevent use of powers, force bubbles would not. Is this character in a solo game? If not, I think my teammates would help me out in an entangle situation. I know if I was on a team and our mage with the VPP (who tend to be very flexible and powerful) got jammed up with an entangle, I'd go "Oh crap, we need this guy" and help him bust out of it. As a GM, I wouldn't have every VIPER agent in every adventure throwing entangles at you. Limitations are meant to limit, not cripple. I tend to use Limitations as vehicles for drama in the course of a story. "Dark Seraph is about to unleash the Beast-from-Hell and only The Mage can stop him...and he's bound in the middle of the summoning pentagram! What will the heroes do?!" Just ranting from a crotchety old gamer. "Why back in my day, we didn't have VPPs...and we were better off for it!"
  10. May I suggest something that prevents the character from speaking (Darkness vs. Hearing?) since you mentioned Incantations as well.
  11. I totally agree. I wouldn't allow it in my game. On the slim chance that I did, I would limit the types of entangles the character could use this power on.
  12. As a total fan of Johns, point taken. Its a hard call which book is best. Suffice to say, if he writes it, I read it. Heck, he got me to read an X-Title (The Morlocks miniseries). The 'stinger' at the end of the latest Titans was priceless.
  13. Mr. Quesada already made the decision. Marvel policy is that all story arcs follow 5-6 issues so they can be trade-paperbacked and sold in bookstores. Its one of the reasons that Geoff Johns, the writer responsible for the previous World Trust and Red Zone storylines, left the title. Mr. Johns is also the writer of JSA, the finest team book currently running IMHO. Oh, and Green Arrow was revealed to be a metahuman in his current series when they brought him back from the dead. I forgot how exactly.
  14. Genetics was in its infancy in the Golden Age. Chromosomes were discovered and their chemical nature was known, but that's about it. I looked it up. Chemistry was the main catalyst for powers in the period. I don't know if your looking to be either historically accurate or fit genre standards. Back to topic... In Marvel's Ultimate Universe, the Hulk is a result of Dr. Banner trying to replicate the supersoldier program and failing. Perhaps (dare I say it) Grond is the result of the Baltimore Project?
  15. My campaign is run out of Chicago and uses the Peacekeepers mentioned in Champions Universe. Theorizing that due to Detroit's proximity to Chicago, the Peacekeepers and several independent heroes were amongst the first one's to respond when things hit the fan. The result: the team suffers severe losses, but two new heroes emerge from the ashes to bolster the ranks of the Peacekeepers. As per my timeline: The Battle of Detroit: Due to the team's proximity to Detroit, Chicago's heroes are among the first to respond to the crisis. Dynaman, The Comet II and The Sting perrish heroically and Turbo is permanently crippled in the conflict. Wildfire, stricken with grief, retires from the team. Dwarfstar and Windstorm, heroes created in the Battle of Detroit, will replace her. Masses of refugees of the ravaged Detroit flock to Chicago. The city barely manages to keep up with the sudden population increase. I have stats for all the characters mentioned. If your interested, please mail me and I'll be happy to provide them for you. lanceskijr@yahoo.com
  16. I've always liked the versatility of 'mask'. Unlike 'cape', a majority of superpowered individuals seem to wear them. It works well because it can also be used as a verb: Reporter: "The robbery was thwarted by the masked crimefighters known as the Good Guys." and derrogatory: Police Detective: "Blaster scorch marks, a shattered skylight, a bunch of skells with broken bones...this scene has f!@#ing mask written all over it!"
  17. Two questions, was it red and did it have the 'Screaming Chicken' decal on the hood? Older guys in my TA club related similar stories about the decal. As far as GM's Bright Red aka Pull-Me-Over Red... I was driving back from Sam's Club in my '99 TA with a carful of groceries, with my gf in the passenger seat. It was rush hour traffic so everyone was below the speed limit. There was a black Camaro directly in front of me. A cop pulled up in the next lane. He paced me, paced the Camaro then dropped back and pulled me over to tell me I couldn't have fuzzy dice hanging off the rear view. I noticed the Camaro had something hanging off the rear view and asked why the cop didn't pull him over too? "You had the red car."
  18. FLGS was just unpacking it today when I stopped in. I'm interested to really go through this one since the DOJ didn't do a playtest on this one...more later.
  19. I think that was a given, and the relaunch may be sooner than later with Ford unveiling the new Mustang and Shelby Cobra. Rumor has it that GM has hired the designer of the PT Cruiser for the redesign. I totally agree. It had the camp/kitsch of the 60s Batman with the addition of raw sex appeal. I found myself being sucked in as well.
  20. Re: Black Scorpion Oh hell yes, preach brother...preach! The motto of my old old TA club was: "Trans Am...the car Darth Vader would drive." And just as a point of fact, it was sadly discontinued in 2002, along with the Camaro.
  21. Lord L is his usual brilliant self in his explanation. I run DEMON pretty much the same way. My DEMON also brokers in souls. One of their agents in my campaign is Gift, created by GM mentor. Its a play off the word gift in english (a present) and german (poison). He does the usual 'soul for great power with the ironic twist' per Twilight Zone, but I've had him do some pretty cruel variants of that, like having junkies sell thier souls for the best high ever. "All I have to do is sign this paper and I get a free fix?....where do I sign?"
  22. The idea (which I should have stated more clearly at the onset), is that these guys who use the death theme more as an intimidation factor. I am trying to avoid supernatural characters (with the exception of Baron Samedi), and thinking along the lines of a bunch of mid-level villains who use their reputation and tactics to great effect. Your mention of Shroud reminded me a villain a friend of mine made for the first incarnation of this team back in the Stone Age. May have to give him a call and see if he remembers her stats.
  23. Good stuff here, one of my favorite types of heroes. Arachnids: I have a Silver Age scorpion based Spider-Man knock off called The Sting. A teenager vacationing in Las Vegas is stung by a scorpion irradiated by atomic testing. He gains the strength, invulnerability and abilities of a scorpion. He creates a 'stingline' (as teenagers of the time were known to do), a telescopic metal tendril with a paralytic poison delivery system and a cable claw that allows him to swing from building to building. My character Tarantula (the DC one) has a number of insect motiffed villains in his Rogue's Gallery. Trapdoor, a spider motiff villain that creates wormholes and favors sneak attacks. Another is Wasp Woman, cosmetic magnate that uses phermones to control men and wasps (based on a roger Corman flick). Finally there's Portia, which is a genus of wolf spider know for their cunning, a femme fatale ex-spy. Canines: I had another roofrunner character called the Fox. He was the son of the heroine White Rabbit (A Black Canary type who could create warpholes) and the silver age Fox. His weapon was the Foxglove (gadget gauntlet) with fired the Foxtail (swingline) and Foxfire (flash). Like his mother, he could open warps, which he called 'foxholes'. His battle cry was Tallyho! As an alternative to the fox/wolf standards, I always thought Mastiff and Foxhound/Wolfhound could be cool themes. Felines: I have a villain team called the Pride (which I had help creating via these boards): Siberian (Brick), Tomcat (Flying Power Armor), Snow Leopard (Ice Guy), Boots (cute girl gadgeteer), and Lioness (avatar of Sehkmet, Egyptian lion-headed goddess of war). No one mentioned equines: Mustang, Bronco, Warhorse, Palamino...how about a St. Louis based hero named Clydesdale I highly recommend Animal Planet/Discovery Channel. Anyone know that platapus have poisonous stingers that produce one of the most painful venoms in the world. And I'm still going to do something with Funnelweb, named for the deadliest spider in the world. As far as sheep...how about Counting Sheep, the sleep inducing villain!
  24. KA, that is an awesome idea...one that I would use in a second if my players would appreciate it. Unfortunately, they are a bunch of "There are some costumed guys...lets go hit them." types. I will ask if your ever planning on running an online game of some type, to please drop me a line, 'cause I'd roll with you anytime.
  25. Lotsa good ideas, thanks! I like the idea of 13 members, same number as one of my favorite villain teams: "Gathered together from the distant corners of the universe are 13 of the most dangerous villains...The Legion of Doom!" Boothill is in...nice imagery there. Epitaph is in...I'm really digging that idea. I'm going to go with just Fatale...the femme part being implied. That makes 8...keep 'em coming. Oh and KA, I'm open to any suggestions and my players don't read the boards, so post away.
