  1. Re: Freaking out the players I have a villain who is a Brick Pro-Wrestler who 'lives his role'. Nocturnus' (think Undertaker when he had a mask) catchphrase was "Darkness Falls!" right before he'd throw his finisher. In a fight with the team, he mashed a pretty tough NPC thanks to a series of good rolls. As a result, he graduated from throwaway goon to a major enemy of the team, and "Darkness Falls!" still brings shivers to my players every time I utter it.
  2. Re: Classing Naming: (this) and (that) I did a post like this awhile ago...some good ideas came up. http://herogame.dans.cust.servlets.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14197
  3. Re: Champs Worldwide: Whaddya want? Since everyone seems to be enthusiastic on Austrailian write-ups, how about Taipan from CU? Any guy that warrants his own personal hot sleep chamber has got to be badass.
  4. Re: Champs Worldwide: Whaddya want? I'll second that notion. Also, since the former Soviet Union is a kleptocracy now, I'd like to see either a 'hero' with questionable morals, or a villain that was once a hero under the communist regime, that figured out that crime pays better than working for the state.
  5. Re: A Twist on the 'Patriot' Archetype: The Embodiment of Weapons Thanks for the input. I'm going to go with: The Lord of Fists (Bare Hands) The Lord of Staves (Clubs) The Lord of Edges (Swords/Daggers/Axes) The Lord of Spears (Spears, natch) The Lord of Arrows (Bows/Crossbows) The Lord of Black Powder (Guns/Bombs/Cannons/etc)
  6. I have a PC who through a quasi-mystical 'radiation accident', has become the 'Lord of Staves', the World's archetypical stick fighter. In a pick up game the other night, I threw the 'Lord of Edges' against him, a character I sort of just came up with. After thinking about it, I thought it would be cool to have a sort of Highlander-ish cabal of beings who were the masters of a weapon whose advent changed the course of human history. They would all try to kill each other to gain the other's mastery. So I've come up with the following: 'The Lord of Fists', 'The Lord of Staves', 'The Lord of Edges', 'The Lord of Arrows' & 'The Lord of Guns'. My question to the panel is: am I missing a history changing weapon? I know there should be a 'Lord of A-Bombs', but I'm trying to keep this very 'street level'. Thanks in advance for you comments/suggestions.
  7. Background Cliche by Comics Age Each comics age seems to have common origin trigger based on the cutting edge science of the time: Golden Age - Chemicals: Jay Garrick Flash, Hourman, The Human Bomb, Captain America, The Joker Silver Age - Atomic Energy: Spider-Man, The Hulk, Captain Atom Bronze Age - Gentics: The X-Men (I know they got their start in the SA, but this is when they became a phenonmenon) Iron Age - Nanotech: The Engineer from The Authority (I don't read much 'true' Iron Age stuff, so this is the only example I got)

    Theme music

Re: Theme music I just ran a retro session set in 1967. I played a 60s compilation disc and Sgt. Peppers for mood. I've done the same thing with a 70s one shot that featured a Shaft-like hero. Used a funk compilation for that one. I find that music works really well in putting players in the time period. I'll have to find a big band compilation for my Golden Age session I'm planning.

  10. Re: Unused Bird/Flying Creature Motifs In one of the recent M&M suppliments (Algernon Files I think), they had a whole team of winged fliers called the Aerie. Their flying brick is Roc.

  12. Re: Animated Series Style Character Images And some Bad Guys (L to R): Halloween, Risk and Tom and April Foolery (Think Joker & Harley Quinn meets Ward & June Cleaver)
  13. Re: Animated Series Style Character Images A few females (L to R): The Silver Age Anthem (who I blatantly ripped off from someone on these boards); Santeria and The Fury
  14. Re: Animated Series Style Character Images Some more good guys (L to R): Ingot, The DOSPA sponsored Rattler and my namesake, Winterhawk in the Mark III armor.

  16. Re: Animated Series Style Character Images I do all my character art in the animated style. I have a Yahoo Group for my campaign which has most of my stuff posted: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/heroicchicago/ Please feel free to join if your so inclined. Here's one I did over a Bruce Timm original of the Justice League, featuring some characters of the campaign.
  17. Re: Help me build the Civic Guard Thank you for the compliments, but I must give credit where it is due. "I Know a Guy..." is just a renamed version of I Know Someone Who Can Help, which can be found on p. 143 of Dark Champions. I renamed it in honor of a co-worker of mine, who Skyscraper is losely based on. And yes, he always seems to 'know a guy' who can help with any situation.
  18. As Skyscraper, he wears a costume in the colors of the Chicago flag; red, white and blue. His insignia is based off the Sears Tower. At maximum height, he is over 200' tall.Personality: Tony was a good guy before getting his powers, always helping out his neighbors where he could. Upon discovering his powers, it was only natural that he would become a hero and protect the city he loves so much. He is a tough guy's tough guy, he has found that little can hurt him at full size. His greatest vulnerability is his generous nature. Tony often gives until it hurts, providing free flowers for needy family's ceremonies and getting easily distracted in combat when innocents are in danger. His generosity has also garnered him a network of contacts and favors from everyone from college professors to mobsters. When confronted with a problem he can't solve with his might, a quick phone call often has exactly what he needs in a matter of hours.Quote:"Why don't you pick on someone your own size...oops, guess you can't"Background: Tony Chivola was a neighborhood florist, as was his father and grandfather before him. He would have been content to remain just that until one fateful delivery at Fermilab. He was looking for an office, and wandered into the particle accelerator seconds before it was locked down and activated. He woke up in the hospital weeks later, much to the amazement of his family and doctors. Counting his blessings, Tony went back to work, expecting to continue with a normal life. Then one day on his route, the El train tracks collapsed. As Tony rushed to help, he noticed his strides becoming longer. As he reached the scene, he caught the falling cars in his hands like a toy train set. After gently laying the train on the pavement, he shrunk back down and disappeared into the crowd. Fortunately, the event took place so quickly, no one recognized Tony, and his identity was safe. Realizing he had been given the ability to really help the city that he loved, he fashioned a costume and became Skyscraper, the Hero with Big Shoulders.Powers/Tactics: Skyscraper can can mass to his body from an extradimensional source, which increases his height and weight, proportionally increasing his strength. Skyscraper's tactics are far from subtle. He gets as big as his surroundings will allow him and hit his opponent until it stops moving.Campaign Use: Skyscraper is a typical "Tough Guy with a Heart of Gold". His limitless connections is what differentiates him from other bricks.

  20. Re: A few names and concepts needed Enchanted PA: How about someone bearing the armor of Achilles, granting him the previous wearers prowess. Perhaps also the strength of Ajax, and other abilities of the participants in the Trojan War. Names Suggestions: Illiad, Trojan Gadgeteer: Juryrig, Makeshift, Justin Case Native American: some of the tribes indigenous to the area were the Mohawk, Cayuga, Delaware and Iroquois. A quick search of the excellent Pantheon.org yielded: Hiawatha, oki (Spirit Force), Master of Life, Seneca Flying Brick/EB: That is really general. Anything specific about him/her?

  23. Re: Happy Halloween Herophiles! That's a really good one. How about the old 'disappearing teleport' from DC, with the added Limitation "Only when he appears to be defeated/killed".
  24. Re: Golden Age Villains needed If you are being true to the comics genre, pre-WWII Golden Age Comics mostly featured mad scientists and gangsters as antaganists. Even cosmically powered heroes such as Alan Scott GL and The Spectre fought normal criminals. This doesn't really translate well to gaming. For GA adventures, I have used Rasputin, who had survived the assassination attempt. A bit cliched I know. He has since become the Ra's al Ghul of my campagin. I have used Dr. Jekyll's formula as a plot device. Asian culture was far less well known during this time. Going for Chinese food was considered quite adventurous (Thank you History Channel). By using Tongs and perhaps Dr. Yin Wu, and really playing up how exotic they seem could add to the flavor of the campaign. How about some of the organziations in their early stages. VIPER was the Unholy Order during this time, and was a globe spanning criminal organization. The Circle of the Scarlet Moon was using its sorcerous influences on organized crime. DEMON's Luther Black was in his prime and beginning to amass mystic might. All would be good if you wanted to avoid Nazis.
