  1. Re: Is It Worth The Points? Again, I feel it is the *Players* responsibility to use *all* of his character's capabilities in a game. Each player should be listening to the descriptions provided and asking questions to find out how the Gm would *allow* his or her special abilities to come to light. So by extension a player that does not want to *find* every opportunity to exercise his unique and perhaps underutilitzed capabilities. then maybe he shouldn't have those abilities as part of his or her character concept. If the player did not want to work at using certain characteristics he shouldn't have purchased them. GM: after checking clues all day you learn that the lair of the dastardly villian, Maximum Porkchop, the King of the Rind, is inside the abandoned pig farm. What do you do now? PoolBoy: Is there a water pipe or canal that I can swim up to minimize my chances of being detected by MP's android pigs? GM: Yes I do believe that there is Poolboy, a small stream runs along the south end of the property and comes within 150 feet of the warehouse/barn complex. Hawksmoor
  2. Re: Player-Built Characters... (bring in PCs with only a cursory nod on gameday) What???? Sorry Etherio that has never 100% absolutely not no way no how mister how Champions PCs in any game I have been involved with been generated. PCs are generated by the player (plus help from other players or GM on difficult or unusual constructs) usually about 3-4 weeks BEFORE game day. Once the Player feels he has done a good job and is satisfied the GM recieves a copy. The GM then employs what ever arcane processes he likes to determine the validity of the PC. At this time he might throw out the PC all together, change limitation levels (sorry no vacuum will be encountered -0 please), tweak Disads, etc. Then either a face to face (preferably or email) exchange is made with the player as the GM explains his executive decisions. Since it is the GMs game the Player has to accept any changes as final or build up a new PC. Usually said PC is either accompanied by text detailing origin, power SFX and rationale for powers. Sometimes Unusual Builds can take all of the 3-4 weeks to get nailed down right. I imagine that in FRed, the new duplication rules create enough weird PCs that the GM has his mind doing loop the loops to figure out if or what the Dupe is like. 3. Re: A Thread for Random Musings My wife just left to go back to the states for six weeks. I am alone now. Now I get to be Mr. Mom alone for the next two weeks. Then I get to go on a transatlantic flight, ALONE with two two year old bundles of energy! Pray for the other people in Business Class! Hawksmoor -Bringing his MP3 on the plane.
  4. Re: A Cross-Game Superhero Game 1991 OKC George Moses's Game. He set us up big time, we had gamed for about a month after our last big bad, Ryder (shiver!) when we noticed we had not had a combat in ages. So we said to George, "George how about a combat?" George said "Sure thing, next week!" All week a little anticipation was building, I worked at the comic/gaming shop and a couple of other Champs players commented on a big event George had planned for our group. I was getting excited. George calls on wednesday saying that the game is postponed, until Friday night, and he'll have to have the game at the shop because the apartment is being bug sprayed that day. I'm like cool no problem. Commence chewing fingernails. Friday, Bryan and I go the Comic Shop. George is all like "Hi, guess what I have in store for you." We go to the back and their are seven other players around the *other* side of the table. They were the Justifiers, George's Last gaming group. So it was set, Vanguard vs. the Justifiers. We just didn't know what George was planning to do. Until, as the Team was at the base we hear a loud BOOM! Prime (the Justifier's Superman Clone) does a movethrough on our Base. Suddenly the Justifiers are coming out of the woodwork. In a few phases all the dance partners are sorted out. Prime vs. Omega, Laserlad vs. Z-man, etc. IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!! The combat took two weeks of at least 10 hours of gaming to complete. Z-man even used falling velocity to get DCV during a recovery because Laserlad's pentrating EB was eating him alive. My most memorable moment was when Prime used his Sticky TK 165 STR (no range, only to lift) to Pick our base up and set it on its side. WOW!!! In the end though we won... How I will never know, PC vs PC games are tough, and they were at least 100xp heavier than we were. It turns out that a advance alien invasion force had subverted the Justifiers to use them as shocktroops before the invasion began. It was not until our mentalist lauched a Mind Probe into one of them that he was able to precieve the hypnotic commands and use his mental EMP to wipe them out! BTW Omega and Prime were the most twinked out PCs I have ever laid eyes on, crafted with loving care by the most experienced BBB rules rapists the New World School of Character Design has ever produced. 5. Re: Super Metals and Alloys Sorry Anomaly, My comic collection is in storage, as I live in Jordan and the Legion book I own (DC Heroes) does not make a reference to Inertron in such a fashion. However a previous poster did use a formula that I have heard before, and it does make sense. Particularly in that pre Zero Hour Jan Arrah was noted as being less able to transmute things as he grew older. The reason was that he was operating on a less instinctive level and more cerebrally defining the changes he made in an items structure (which made him slower and strangely *less* powerful). And he still often converted items into Inertron. However, since I cannot back it up my assertion that it is not an element, I'll have to side with you, if you can produce proof that it is an element. Hawksmoor PS given the relative availablity of Inertron Ultraboys Pentration Vision is actually MORE limted than Mon-el and Superboys. I just noticed that.
  6. Re: M&M: this is a Nightmare? I too understand the weakness of the DC Heroes game's Skill set. There are only a few skills. It gets a little better in revised, but in general the problem remains in the generic Scientist Skill. One of my fixes is to have ONE Science Specialty free and other Science Specialties for +1fc up to fc10. Other than that the Skill set is perfect for the as you said "Fast and Dirty" gaming that this middle of the road Supers game is perfect for. "i roll a 96 to hit, How many collumn shifts on Grond?" I loved my Champs to DC Conversions, I am going to *have* to rebuild them. I lost them in the computer crash of '03 Hawksmoor
  7. Re: Super Metals and Alloys Just some thoughts Yes Cap's Sheild is an alloy of unbelievable hardness, It is one of the toughest materials imaginable. Thor's Hammer is Uru stone! that is right stone, enhanced to unbreakability by Odin and the dwarf forgers. Wolverine, Ultron, Bulleye, and a few other individuals (like a version of Doc Ock) have *lesser* Adamantium. Tough but not invulnerable to harm. Really tough people can break it, but only people like the Hulk, Magneto, or Thor. Inertron is not an Element, but Element Lad was not always contrained by only elements, he can transmute anything. Everyone I have ever asked about it has considered Inertron be on par with lesser Adamantium. Mostly because of its relative availablilty in the 30th century. Promethium is an odd bird. It is lots of things including an awesome Tertagen (monster creator/Hero origin source), and a self renewing power source. It can be alloyed with steel to create a substance of amzing hardness, although like lesser Adamantium it can and is broken by the strongest of DCs Heroes. All of this is over course IIRC and can and is often turned over by writers employing literary license. Hawksmoor
  8. Re: Multiple Secret IDs Thanks ghost that is a better fix, too many points for their builds. Commander John Glenn Armstrong is the Primary, and Dr. Elijah Wynn-Huffington Ph.D. is the Brainy secondary. The combine to form Firestorm. (Hey My Firestorm is better than your Firestorm...because he is MINE!) The Norms are an Astronaut and a Courageous Scientist who got their powers investigating the *White Event* in the game world. They get imbued with ^^^drum roll please^^ Phenomenal Cosmic Power! Powers wise Simple Flying Energy Projector Brick (Hey it is a classic design) Including Matter Manipulation tricks (Guantlets he manipulates for material if all else fails) Appearance wise mostly Captain Atom with blue flaming hair. Once I get HD v2 in the mail I'll post him. Formating errors bug me. Hawksmoor
  9. Re: My Faithful Steed Oh! Indirect so the Horse can come at you from any angle. And you are welcome. Hawksmoor
  10. Re: My Faithful Steed Blue I'd go with Hugh on this one. He has been thinking about Teleport Permutations for a while. However have you though about Duplication (Totally Different Duplicate)? That way you are in total control of the Horse and it is a smart and skilled as you want to make it. After all aren't a Cowboy and his loyal steed more than just a team? Don't they fight as one? Plus the horse doesn't need Teleport if it is a dupe! Hawksmoor
  11. Re: Help name a character Shadow (a related term as in a shadow of something, a quality inherent) Metamorph Aspect Hawksmoor
  12. Re: M&M: this is a Nightmare? Plus when it was legal Z-man had this Multiattack power The Zenith Effect 16d6 EB vs Energy with a linked 3d6 RKA Explosion no range Pentrating personal immunity (4c) 7d6 Major Transformation to Dust All or nothing (4C) And I liked to Push the EB. And Z-man was 300 pt PC. I loved being a powergamer. Hawksmoor
  13. Re: M&M: this is a Nightmare? Starwolf: I play Exalted. With Solars. I know dice pools. Buckets, Heaps of Buckets. I find i need at least 30 all for me. Hawksmoor
  14. Re: Is It Worth The Points? Slightly off topic, but I do not feel it is the GMs job description to design ways *out* of deathtraps. Sure design devious ways to kill or torture the PCs but a way out? Nah! that is what Players are *for*! It is up to them to use their brains, their PCs and teamwork (if applicable) to escape. I just rarely let the first idea suceed. "We already tried that? The room is magnetically sealed!" Hawksmoor
  15. Re: Hero Character Portfolio -- What Do *You* Want To See? To be honest I wouldn't just buy the product. If it was included as a freebie in something else OK, but EXCEL and the soon to arrive (crosses fingers) HD v2 can do everything I need. But if you are going to do it I would like to see a full or 3/4 page wide block of ruled lines for inputing Powers. With the 350 point character and the loads of skills I buy I need that room to record my PC. a 1/3 width column just does not cut it. Ideally though this would be a Love gift to devoted fans posted on the forum. Hawksmoor
  16. Re: M&M: this is a Nightmare? Actually in DC 2 and 3 Superman and the rest of the heavy hitters were depowered. Superman only has a STR of 25 now. Admittedly I found that DC has the hardest times dealing with the Batman/Green Hornet/Dare Devil type PCs. The aforementioned doubling of the APs means that not too much mechanically is different from these types of people. Low Powered games end up with alot of similar PCs around the table. I handled this by going up scale on powers and running games at a base of 1000 Hero Points. DC is good because it is the middle ground between old Marvel (simple) and Champions/HERO (complex). But Champs will always have a place in my heart as the one true SuperHero game! Hawksmoor
  17. Re: Multiple Secret IDs Ghost? Is that a FRed Change? Gotta get me some of that! Hawksmoor I really like your build
  18. Re: A Thread for Random Musings I thought Zornwil sucked me into his strange little world. Hawksmoor -which is appearently preferable to being in Mightybecs
  19. Re: A Thread for Random Musings The Battlestar Galactica movie is on AFN Monday night! I wonder who plays Starbuck? Hawksmoor
  20. Re: M&M: this is a Nightmare?
  21. Re: M&M: this is a Nightmare? Actually if we are pimpin other gaming systems. I will always be partial to Mayfair's DC Heroes. The only thing it did poorly was it had limited skills, yet you could do lots with the skills you had. And you only need two dice! Hawksmoor
  22. Re: Limitation punishment Dyffud the Butler, A hero's Hero. Yippee Cayyee! That was an excellent game! Kudos! Hawksmoor
  23. Re: Is It Worth The Points? Hehe Ripper on the #5 bus going to Silver Spring Metro Station. Love that imagery. Hawksmoor
  24. Re: Multiple Secret IDs I agree Vorsh's idea is the simplest. And sometimes simple is the best way. As to the 5/1 and 1/1 Multiform and Duplication are 5 points of AP for 1 point. If you exceed the power level of the orginal form you have to pay 1 for 1. IE Elephant Man buys a new multiform allowing his transformation into a Mammoth, EM is a 300 pt PC and the mammoth form is 400 points. It would cost 160 pts for this power 60 +100 for the extra points in the Mammoth form. Hawksmoor
