  1. Re: Social Club of Outstanding Adventurers (or some less absurd) Worked pretty well in Planetary, from what little we saw of Hark and the Society. I'd say go for it.
  2. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Better yet, will he challenge his critics to boxing matches?
  3. Re: I have a dream. (and MAN was it wierd!) Once that I can remember. Dream opens with me and my best friend at the time hanging out in my basement. Then the narrator chimes in: "Your best friend. You love him like a brother. So it comes as a complete surprise when he tries to strangle you." Which he precedes to do. In an early instance of my taking control of my dreams, I then beat up my friend, pull out a phaser and zap the off-screen narrator.
  4. Re: Darren's GAC Sneak Peeks #2: The Brawler I'd add a bunch of mystic knowledge based on the origin but I think this is basically correct. His Body's a 15 and his PD and ED are 8 (I just looked him up) so it's easy to assume that other powers (like his Damage Reduction) came later. Also forgot to mention that I do like The Brawler writeup a lot. Some of my favorite Golden Agers are of the "Two-Fisted American" template.
  5. Re: Things That Go Bump in the Night An adjusted 5th Edition HERO based in part on some of the material presented here? My guess, anyway.
  6. Re: Darren's GAC Sneak Peeks #2: The Brawler I think the usual answer these days involves somebody in the government (often FDR himself these days) deciding the characters work in costume is too important for morale and the home front and all that. A lot of them end up doing commando/ranger work even if they don't have military rank (like the Invaders). Many enlist, even if only temporarily (like the JSA and I think Superman). I think you might be right about The Brawler's age. One the war started for the US, I believe men in their early '40s at least were eligible.

    Fish-Men

Re: Fish-Men There's a tad more detail at books.google.com, mostly referring to the god's temper, and that the human child would have "the ravenous mien and dangerous temper of the god". The child would also have "a mouth-like orifice below the shoulder-blades, garnished with teeth". Edit: The book is the Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics by James Hastings.

    Fish-Men

Re: Fish-Men The 6th edition Bestiary is $25 for the PDF. I'd do a Google search for Carcharadons and see if any of the pictures work for you. Laundry Knight has the right idea for role-playing what you have in mind, imo.
  9. Re: Car Shark, Asylums, Eldritch horrors and Fell's Point: A couple questions Oh, absolutely. Good call.
  10. Re: Ghouls that are not undead creatures If the first ghoul was cursed, than he or she may well have committed some sort of transgression that ticked off a god/priest/sorceror sort, leading to the curse. How he or she bred from that point is an exercise for you and/or the GM. First thing that comes to mind about making ghouls "scarier" is to up their PRE. Possibly give them some fear effect as well. (I'm not a 6th ed guy, so I don't know how if that's done different nowadays).

  12. Re: RIP: Professor MAR Barker An amazing world-builder indeed. R.I.P.
  13. Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Sergeant Carter of Mars A cantankerous Marine finds himself on an alien world having to turn a bunch of Martian simpletons into a fighting unit. Wacky hi-jinx ensue. "You have *got* to be kidding me, Tarkas!"
  14. Re: Horror Hero I think you got the point across quite well, actually. Kudos.
  15. Re: Golden Age Characters by Darren I've got the '94 Iron Crown edition (4th ed?) which I enjoy immensely. One of the things I liked most is that it recognized that there's a lot of humor to be found in Golden Age superhero comics.
  16. Re: The Non Sequitor Thread "Excuse me, sir........but that's my crouton."
  17. Re: Golden Age Characters by Darren It's certainly something any GM might want to consider. The only Golden Age campaigns I ever played in were set in 1942 and 1946, so it wasn't an issue. A lot of the early '40s stuff didn't shy away from death and destruction, probably because of the direct influence of the pulps. (I'm thinking in particular of the Sub Mariner flooding New York) It's certainly possible to go epic and apocalyptic in a GA game. Not all that germane necessarily, but this did trigger a memory of a chilling flashback sequence in the old Ostrander/Mandrake Spectre comic, when the JSA are touring a liberated camp and then have to prevent a berzerk Spectre from rampaging across Germany.
  18. Re: Golden Age Characters by Darren I think you've pretty much nailed it. We've seen more of a shift in recent years towards the Marvels/Godlike approach, though. Putting it this way: Roy Thomas' Invaders series was a superhero comic set in WW2. Ed Brubaker writes war stories with superheroes. You can great campaigns out of both approaches.
  19. Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Bernie Macross A Fish Called Wanda Sykes Jimmie Walker: Texas Ranger

  21. Re: The Non Sequitor Thread Between KISS, The Eagles, and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer you have everything that was wrong with music in the '70s.
