  1. Re: 6th Edition Villains I'd like to see a couple of Galactic Champions Villains get converted. Supernova for example. So far as new villains go, a small grouping of Star*Guard space-villains would be nice too (pokes Darren).
  2. Re: Sky Scorcher 1 megaton air-to-air missile (1956) I love the exaggerated cones protruding from the intakes. Classic 1950s design sense there. And without an "impenetrable Atomic Shield" defense, the Cold War would have not been the same.
  3. Re: Cut 'em Off at the Horsehead Nebula! Wow, without even knowing it, I have *for years* been enjoying the wrong type of adventure fiction. Cause I'll admit proudly that the Western and Space Opera go hand-in-hand dancing through the tulips. At least now I know I've been wrong. I still don't want to be right though .
  4. Re: Cut 'em Off at the Horsehead Nebula! Gaaaah!!! where's part Two!?! I'm invested.. I have to know how the extended blog ends!!!!
  5. Re: Help with cost of living in 1630's France From the point of view of cost-of-living, the King pretty much got whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted it. Royal debts came from the wars he chose to fight, or the provinces he wished to buy. It's good to be da King!
  6. Re: Russian SUV The whole thing is Bulletproof to boot! Gotta protect that whale penis interior (and the three bottles of ultra-premium vodka).
  7. Re: Proof Lightsabers make everything better! Must be a British Artist
  8. Re: Lucha Libre: El Vetica It is questions such as these which will plague this forum, this system, this hobby long after this thread has become little more than a mere memory. God help us all.
  9. Re: DC check My explanation goes kind of "behind the screen" that is, I try to tailor my target numbers based on the amount of Dramatic Tension I wish to create in the challenge. For routine tasks with nearly no chance of failure, I often either don't require a roll, or if the consequences for failure are particularly dramatic, I ask for a roll and simply assign failure on an extremely bad roll (1 on a d20, 18 on 3d6 or a level or two of Unluck). For easy tasks, those challenging for normal folk, but something a hero (that is a PC) should manage with a little effort, I aim for a 25% fail ratio. That would be a 5 or less on a d20 (after all modifiers are accounted for) or around 12 or 13- on 3d6. For harder tasks, such as those with a 50/50 chance of success, I set the target number at around 11 on a d20 (after all modifiers are accounted for) or a 10- on 3d6. Really tough tasks (dare I say Heroic?) that require great effort and/or planning on the part of the PC gets a 15 on a d20 or a 8- on 3d6. Then truly legendary efforts get a Natural 20 a 3 on 3d6, or a level or two of luck. From a d20 perspective, the actual numbers have to scale with the ability of the character in question. a 1st level character with a total bonus (from characteristics, skills, etc..) of +10 would have a DC of 20 for a 50% chance of success. A 20th level character with a bonus of +50 would have a DC of 60. In HERO, I'd simply apply some minor modifiers if any to bring the target number to around 10- (really, anything in the 9- to 11- range.) Now, this strategy requires some decision making on the part of the Game Master. Be aware of the character making the roll. Jumping across a narrow rooftop should be no problem for "the greatest thief in the city" (and I wouldn't require anything more sever than a simple "check for catastrophic disaster" roll), but might be a critical challenge for the decrepit, ancient sage who can barely walk, or the stumpy dwarf wearing 300 pounds of metal plates.
  10. Re: MESSENGER Went Into Safe Mode Approaching Mercury God NO! Not the Blortch again!! Quick, someone get the President! It's time for Doctor Captain Adventure (!) to fly to Mercury again! Hopefully the Adventure (!) Cadets stand ready.
  11. Re: Champions I'll be happy with a 6E Champions section on how best to use super-powered Apes.
  12. Re: When will Champs Online show up in the HERO Store? I was really wondering if the actual MMO product would become available in the online store. I'm certain that all of the PnP products will be there in any event.
  13. Thought it would be neat to buy 6e, CO, and the 6eCO supplement from one place at one time . Couldn't find Champs Online.. well.. online *here*. Did I just miss something, or am I having a stroke of BRILLIANCE!!! (GENIUS!!)
  14. Re: Top 75 Spaceships in movies and TV The list is wrong wrong wrongity wrong wrong! (Briefly explodes in an exhaustive list of dozens of ships that deserve to be on a list of "Top Spaceships in Movies and TV" more than the NSEA Protector from Galaxy Quest, or the "Klingon Tanker" (???)) Uncle Martin's ship from My Favorite Martian makes the cut, but the Death Star doesn't? *ahem* (wipes sweat from brow.. takes a cleansing breath). It's less a list of "Top 75 ships" and more of "75 ships I could think of before heading to bed on a Wednesday Night after watching Aliens." (grumblegrumble TARDIS at 65.. grumble grumble.. nerd rage.. grumble)
  15. Re: Who is your favourite Champions Character Background/History? Grond; for all the reasons mentioned, and all those reasons we already know and love. Foxbat; because he made the decision to live a life of Cartoonish Supervillainy! The Monster; because it has no background.. only the history it's made since appearing. Colonel Vasilov (from Red Doom); Because he's an irredeemable KGB Mastermind, and would be a ready-made nemesis for any Silver Age Patriotic Hero. And last but not least, Herculan (5th edition); I appreciate how his original history and background was fully developed and integrated into the Champions Universe.
  16. Re: Lifetime Subscription It all depends on what you expect from CO. I'm certain that the game will be going strong after the first two years. That's based on Cryptic's track record and the general enthusiasm of the fan base. Beyond that... "reply hazy ask later"... but I can make an educated guess that barring complete catastrophic disaster, CO will continue to enjoy success beyond the two year mark. Will it dethrone WoW? No. If you're going into Champs Online thinking that you're on the ground floor of the next worldwide pop-culture sensation, a la Everquest, then WoW, you're going to be disappointed. Is it going to replace your 20 year running tabletop Champs Game? No. This isn't D&D Online, Cryptic isn't Turbine, and DOJ isn't (by any stretch of the imagination WotC (and that's a *good* thing.))
  17. Re: Lifetime Subscription So in practical terms.. so long as the game lasts 14 months the lifetime sub comes out ahead.
  18. Re: Confedrate Comics I doubt the institution of slavery would last until 1976. It's just not an efficient system of labor, especially once Industrialization hits the Agricultural sector. However, I could envision a Civil Rights style movement and social upheval erupting in the CSA in '76. Especially when set against the backdrop of the Nothern Bicentennial
  19. Re: [uF]Advent - Union City Ha HAAAA HAAAAA hahahahahaaaaaa! I live in Union City, California and I'm running a PA HERO game which involves a band of reconstructionists called "The Advent Patrol". So when I spied your Thread title I thought "who's sniping my campaign?" Good Stuff. DEMON is one of the best supplements out there for HERO.
  20. Re: Five Innovative But Impractical Handguns I had many characters pack a LeMat in Deadlands. The shotgun barrel was always that lovely close-in "equalizer" and really only had to be fired once.
  21. Re: GM Justice Inc Quandry Bonnie and Clyde were hammered by BARs, which fire a .30-06 round, and could tear straight through the body of the car they're driving. The Thompson Gun fires .45 ACP ammo which won't have as much penetration of the vehicle's body. So, shoot the car up. KO the PCs (if they demand dice rolls, smack em with 10 dice of Normal Damage to represent the combination of being bashed around in the car wreck and being ground zero for the fusillade). Drug from the wreck, semiconsciuos and bleeding they get to wake up to a delightful villainous monologue where their captor will expound on the plans for world domination and how the "pathetic so-called heroes are now powerless to stop me" (cue manic laughter).
  22. Re: Stormbringer universe to HS Take a look at The Valdorian Age supplement for Fantasy Hero. It has a magic system that is nearly perfect for Stormbringer style games. Sorcerers in VA use a Summon to spin off all their magic, and keep track of a "credit/debit" favor system with the entities with whom they exploit. It is much different than the Chaosium magic system, but I feel it reflects the books much more closely. also check out http://www.multiverse.org. It's the Moorcock site and there's a healthy community of gamers exploring his Multiverse over there.
  23. Re: Lucha getting the love... It's because El Hijo de Pheemy was featured in an example on page 61. The unstoppable tag team described in those paragraphs elevated LLH from Great to UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME!!! Thanks Darren and Jason, the mention made Tristan's weekend!
