  1. The problem isn't in the mechanics of the Hero System(HS), it's perfectly legal to buy it down. The problem is with the execution of your concept. HS relies heavily on the concept of the character you are attempting to play. The rules are there to help you with that. I have a character, Surge, whom I bought down her characteristics to a Normals as a baseline for the character. I wanted that so if her mutant abilities were ever suppressed, I'd have a definitive baseline for the GM to work with. There was no munchkinism involved in my decision, just the desire to make the character as I saw her. Her Presense of 8 made things difficult, but I eventually bought PRE Defense to help her compensate for the monsters she runs across as a hero, but keep her Timid demeanor.
  2. Well, I'd be making my villains as most CU villains are out of the league of characters designed for these campaign guidelines. As I'm using these guidelines as being inspired by, as opposed to, playing a game in the Batman: AA universe.
  3. Is it just me but Batgirl and Harley are weaker than normals?
  4. I'm saying 6th as that is the current edition and I'd like this to be accessible to potential new players using Complete Champions. So, Superheroic, Low-Powered (300 with 60 in complications) and how low should we go with the defenses. I think the basic assumption is that they need to be able to be hurt by normals. Defenses are likely based on body armor, which should stop a knife and bullet resistant to handle most pistols.
  5. Hello, everyone. I am hoping to have a discussion and eventually settle upon a Campaign Setting inspired by the Batman Arkham game series. The goal behind it is to choose points for starting characters and guidelines for powers in the rare case of metahuman abilities.
  6. A person who buys down their DMCV to 0 is akin to the person who has NO ability to fend off any mental condition, tends to be first to be messed with at the first sign of psychic phenomenon in any area. Are they doing a seance? Demon needs to inhabit a body, Bam! The way I see it, as I even mentioned to people who applied to my campaigns before, buying down your MCV is legal, but what is the In Game reason for you to buy it down? Character generation is about bringing your concept to life, not about jockeying points to buy everything you can with the points you can. I always felt the Hero System is about bringing a character to life within a cohesive framework. Do you try to build the character concept, or jockey to minmax your way to victory. It's the difference between character building and powergaming, especially when you see multiple character submissions for your campaign with the same loophole being exploited. Just because of this happening so much in the sixth edition games I was involved in, I've come to change my further campaign efforts to start MCV values at 0, to assume people have no inherent knowledge of mental combat. Having an MCV of 3 is a holdover from earlier editions where the Mental Combat Value used to be call Ego Combat Value or ECV and it was derived from the EGO stat. In the earlier editions, stronger willed characters were harder to mentally influence. All I'm really saying is look at character building for concept and not to minmax characters, this hobby already has enough Munchkins, we need good characters and story if we want to bring in new generations of players into the fold.
  7. I'm coming out of left field with this, but an SK PC could have multiple skill levels, that, under proper conditions, could be traded into extra damage, especially if you can attack w/o being counterattacked, like after they are flashed or blinded and you attacked from a concealed position.
  8. How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? First Champions character I was satisfied with, based on Captain America What was the first tabletop RPG you played? Back in 1978 What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed? See above image What are you currently playing/GMing? Tend to play only Champions with a slight smattering of Pathfinder
  9. Hello, Steve. I was attempting to create a Gravity Control power based around the rules for G-Forces in the Star Hero book. My question is on the application of the Attack Versus Alternate Defense. When buying AVAD for TK, does it: affect what is needed to resist the STR of the TK or affect what is needed to resist the damage of the TK on the target or affect both? I'd like clarification on AVAD and, if you would, how you'd write up Gravity Control with the Star Hero rules as inspiration.
  10. Well, the campaign is of the standard Superhero sort.
  11. So, that being the case, Hyper-Man, what do you guys think about how common the defense is? Rare? Uncommon?
  12. Hi, everyone. I've been trying to port a character from V&V who had Gravity Control into the Hero System. Gravity Control, as in increasing and decreasing its its hold on a target. This is what I have so far based on insight from 6th Edition Star Hero: Gravity Control: Telekinesis (22 STR), Area Of Effect (4m Radius; +1/4), Attack Versus Alternate Defense (make a STR vs STR Roll w/o Density Increase added, at least 2 pts innate Resistant PD for each 5 pts of STR subjected to, defenses based on anti-gravity or Flight with No Gravity Modifier; All Or Nothing; +1) (74 Active Points); Only To Pull Objects Straight Down To Earth Or Hold Them Off The Ground (-1) Your thoughts?
  13. in Metahumans Rising(MHR), rolling a 6, during your attack roll, adds 1 for each 6 rolled on top of what it is normally done. The Impervious boon in that game allows you to ignore all damage normally, but sixes on the attack can bypass that. When I discussed this idea with Certified, it was with the idea of trying to write up a version of Invulnerability, Nigh-invulnerability, for lack of a better term, that used Damage Negation but reduced the cost of the power to more reasonable levels.
  14. It is a case of mixed terms between one game system and another. The charge is just meant to last in the phase it is activated on.
  15. The sprites used on Warcraft didn't have that kind of detail, so I never noticed.
  16. You guys need to remember, the world of Warcraft(small w) had oil rigs even back in Warcraft 2, the RTS many of us originally found about the franchise from. Both sides in that game had access to them as they were needed for war ships.
  17. Hey, guys. I've come up with the idea of making the Legion of Heroes, our somewhat official Champions Online supergroup into a Roleplay group. While still acting as a way to try to look for a group to play with, it'll attempt to foster RP in a community environment. Thoughts? Too little, too late?
  18. Here I am thinking this was gonna be just a rule issue and it turned out to be so much more.
  19. Wow, I hadn't thought there would be so much debate associated with this topic. Anyway, the original idea was just simply have two sets of powers, the type of powers didn't matter save that they were indeed very different in look. I had suggested to the player that he could pull it off just by having each set Only in Alternate ID, with powers A being Male and powers B being female, but clearly there are areas of metaphysics involved here. The idea that the gender also affects ones sense of self didn't dawn on me, neither did the differences in organs. How much of a character's gender is simple semantics and how much does it affects the character's sense of self? If this had been a machine character with two power sets which changed aspects of the machine's appearance, would there be so much debate? As I see it, the gender of a character is just a special effect, defined by the player, but clearly other people feel that a character is not just a simple special effect but something that truly defines the nature of the form and their sense of self.
  20. Ok, I get that, but that doesn't answer the main question. The question lies in how to buy the gender change power.
  21. I have a fellow player looking to make a character that has two different power sets, each set attached to a particular gender. I was thinking that the change in gender can be handled as easily as Instant Change is in the Transform example for clothes. Cosmetic Transform 1d6 (one gender into another and vice-versa; method of healing back is the repeat use of the power), trigger (changing gender is a zero phase action, trigger immediately automatically resets; +¾) (5 active points); limited target (self only; -½). total cost: 3 points. Is this enough to effect the change of gender?
  22. Hold up, Nolgoth. When did they remove the sector blocks? I don't recall hearing about that.
  23. So, we have a mecha, a guy holding a cross(vampire hunter?), ninja, archaeologist explorer, Ms Blue & Yellow superheroine, the suave spy, a sorceress, the gun-ho soldier, sci-fi power armored trooper, the plant thing, cave man, Roman(?) warrior, post-apocalypse guy, buccaneer, cartoon dog, droid, and a dwarf represented with the guy to the extreme left not clear enough for me to identify. BTW, George Pérez is credited for the cover art for the book. I was talking with Narf the Mouse on the subject of Ms Blue and Yellow before in the Hero Chat. Narf thought she seemed 'cheerfully aggressive.' I was thinking with the bolt on her lower torso makes me think of energy of some sort. I'm thinking a flying brick with some sort of energy that charges up. I agree with you, CaptnStrawberry, that her prominent 'power belt' does scream Focus to me.
  24. Hello, everyone. I was wandering through images looking for inspiration for a new superhero character concept and I came across this blast from the past; from rear cover of the 4th Edition Hero System Rulesbook(see below) then it dawned on me, the superheroine in the blue and yellow leotard was a cool looking picture and I had never seen a writeup for this character. So, since it was this book that inspired me to first invest myself with the Hero System, I thought writing her up might be the way to give a little back to the community and another thought popped in my head to open this up to the forumers and see what other writeups we could get that were inspired by this picture. P.S.: Does anyone have a clean image of the back cover of this book? I want to see if I can fill in the details of the superheroine to post with the character sheet.
