My respected peer from the far north, you have told me that America is resilient, and it is tough and my nation will yet make it through Trump and our other troubles. Even when we were feeling very defeatist.
    Let me return the favor...
    Where Britain Prevails
    And America rises!
There's Canada getting things done more quietly. The moose block the traffic of wicked and kind alike, the snow falls on the rich and poor with little concern for economic state... the bags of milk that freak your southern neighbors out (And thus add to the flavor no doubt) continue on. Witty words continue to trickle down onto the modern pen and paper to delight the television masses , crowds cheer a small puck skittering on the ice, and corruption aside, troubles aside, Canadians continue to get the job done. Outnumbered, Outgunned, but rarely outclassed, they wear their humble maple leaf inside their hearts if not always over them. They strive to make their nation a Mosaic , then sigh as Lenny or Pierre go a bit too free form (DAMN IT LENNY! Quebec we understand but we thought we could count on Alberta to behave!)  with the art. But they trudge on, the soldier on, they earn their loonies, love their families, and sing Tim Horton's praises even if they don't go there because..well, damnit it, Canada. They'll deal with political scandals, yahoos, and morons in power just like every other democracy, but hold to a quiet optimism that next decade, they won't screw up in the same old ways, it'l lbe brand NEW Screw ups that occur.
And that is progress of a sort they can accept.
    Utopia?
    Never happen.
Heaven? Well, that's your right to believe in or not.
But Canada? Canada rolls up it's plaid sleeves (Having been forced in this bad scenario to all dress like lumberjacks) and gets on to work keeping the snow clear and slowly improving what they got..while waiting patiently for the moose of '#### happens' to clear the path so they can resume.

Canada will make it. It has survived sharing a blanket with an elephant that tosses in its sleep for quite a while. It has dealt with an often contrary Mother nation that ignores it or calls it to go hours out of it's way to pick up something would you dear?  It takes in the huddled masses then sighs as they keep huddling like a Middle School chaperone trying to get the girls and boys to maybe dance together to some really wonderful songs by Rush... come on, you kids have heard of Rush right?

Canada is not the world, and the world is not Canada, but if one nation has a chance of acting as a flotation device in this sea of insanity we seem to be plunging into, I would put money on Canada fitting that niche.
And if Canada does it, maybe other countries will go "I can do it too" and bob to the surface as well... until each, inspired by the example, will make its way clear.

Of course, on behalf of America, if and when that happens, we'll claim we were the ones who take the credit for it. It's our thang and the world owes us after saving their asses from WW... (Checks date) Oh my god has it been that long? Okay, yeah, that excuse is getting thin.
Anyway... you're not doing it for the glory, you're Canada. But do it I think you will

Part of the problem with the Phoenix Saga in movies is that Fox has steered away from the Cosmic Entity inhabiting a mortal part of the mythos. As Zslane said, it's sad that we won't see the MCU get to deal with this, as they have introduced their cosmic side. Its why I can't wait to see them deal with the FF at some point hopefully. Not sure I am happy with them turning Ms. Marvel into Nova, meaning we wont get a Nova movie, but I give them the benefit of the doubt. A HUGE part of that saga when it originally ended was the fact the X-Men had to fight for her life though hopelessly outclassed, something Fox doesn't really have the stable to enact.

I'll give the Hyadesians this much; they were willing to work around the rules. Of course, they were the ones establishing the rules so I guess I shouldn't be surprised they had made a practice of it. I honestly wonder if the first thing anyone learns once they set up a system is how to game it? Wouldn't it be odd If that was one of the great commonalities of all sapient species everywhere? Or maybe not so odd after all.

"Looks like, while it's a bit of a mess around the edges," I told Lady Obsidian, "That we've got all the pieces getting on the board, to use a chess analogy."

"oh really?" She said, "We have more heroes than they're ready for, have them injured while we're healthy again, and you have something Mr. Brute wants so you think his options are limited."

"I did think all that, but the way you're saying that makes me think we're not as on top as I think we are?" I raised a brow.

"We are not, for one thing, Slime and Pogo are here, Viewpoint is being tended to, but has it occurred to you that there's a wildcard we haven't been able to track down?"

Oh, it occurred, instantly, "Bloodwatch, you think they'll go after the psycho?"

"As we increasingly take options away, possibly, yes, and other targets among the police and the like too. I don't know Miser Brute, but it seems to me he doesn't like the idea of coming when whistled for. Oh you might get him, but he'll make at least one more big play. Fortunately, Tornado is on the case again and I'm working out some possibilities with Mabel."

"Any theories?" I said, "I mean, what will be his priorities besides a giant 'you're not the boss of me' move?"

"He can do the math, even if he doesn't know all of us are in good shape now. He's going to try to get back up," she says "Or, in lieu of that, enough distraction that we can't possibly be at full strength when it's time to tussle because our members will be split up"  Lady Obsidian said, "Mind you, I don't know the man, but you say this is bait he can't refuse. Doesn't mean he won't try to blow up the pier to make sure it gets in reach."

"Hey," I said after a moment, "That was kind of a folksy metaphor for a supergenius city slicker scientist."

"Yes, you're a very bad influence," She agreed with just enough humor in her voice, then more seriously, she said "you disagree with my take on his tactics?"
"No, I just don’t' know what form you being right will take," I frowned.

"That's what we have to figure out" she concurred "With less time, and no telepaths. Isn't superheroing fun?"

"Oh yeah, it's a hoot" I said, "I think I'll see what others think and then hope you, Mabel and Tornado can figure out later."

It turned out that superheroes are a bold and opinionated lot.

Arctic Fox was flat out clear in her opinion that yeah there would be trouble, "Mr. Brute may claim to be a tactical genius, but he's also herding some real nutbars in his group. We're talking folks who enjoy causing terror, and one of them a pyromaniac to boot. He's got to feed them raw meat sometime, and soon."

Pinprick wasn't as sure, "They stick their heads out, we might catch them early. Sure, we're playing defense, but we know the town better than them. If he lets someone 'go play' that someone is liable to get arrested and then he's down even more muscle. His son is on the line? He's going to want to stack the deck in his favor big time. You do not play with stakes that high and that personal."

"I still don't think he's going to sit on his thumb, and he's got to know that as we out number him, so what, he walks up to visit Eel at Dawn knowing we could jump them? I don't care how powerful they are, they can't take us all.  So, he has to change the game plan," Fox said.

Slime bubbled and 'spoke' in that way that he did, words forming, along with a stink that caused Arctic Fox to wrinkle her nose.

Can't you both be right? He will make a move because he must, but he will not divide his forces to do it. He needs muscle. I think you are both neglecting the largest source of possible followers for him in this city, one that even if they decline, will add to the chaos he needs.

"What source?" I raised a brow.

Prison. He will seek recruits in the prisons. He will form a break out. Sometimes I forgot that Slime was a prisoner too once, a victim of an evil empire with a story that I never did get all the details on.

"Project Tank is pretty far off," I said, not completely sold, "I mean, this city is a regular stopping point for them, but it's hardly…"
"No, wait, Slime's got a point," Pinprick said, "Sure, there's no super prison here but we have regular ones that if you broke everyone out at once, could be a real threat. And Project Tank runs things through all the time. Maybe Mr. Brute knows something we don't know about that?"

I groaned, "We've only got a few hours before dawn what do we do while we wait for Tornado to get the detective work and…"

There was a snoring sound from nearby. I turned to see Pogo , dozing hard on a sofa.

There aren't any saints running for president, at least none that will ever get close enough to the job that you ever hear of them.

Back when I was applying for college my mom recommended that I claim the native american that family legend says that I possess to give me a edge in the process.  It didn't seem right to me so I firmly told mom, "No".

However, if Elizabeth Warren making the opposite decision that I did is the worst thing that they that they can find about her, then by politician standards she might as well be a saint.  Barack Obama was a former druggy,  George W was a draft dodger.  Bill Clinton was a serial adulterer.  George H Bush denounced the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act when running for senate in Texas not because he didn't believe in civil rights, but because he believed more in getting elected and he knew racism played well in Texas.  Ronald Reagan was another adulterer and helped Joseph McCarthy ruin peoples lives.  Okay, Jimmy Carter was and is pretty much a saint, but he was a lousy president and the only reason that he got elected was because after Nixon the country was desperate for a good man.

Still, as a nation we a very sanguine about the fact that the men that run for the highest office in the nation have dishonorable actions on their records.  Yet
for some reason, we seem unwilling to allow female candidates the same human moral frailty.

In my supers campaign, it as a minor background/world building point that professional sports as we know them in the real world died out in the '90s. The "steroid era" was heightened with the "metahuman" issue, and any player who was better than the rest got tarred and feathered with accusations of being "too good to be human" and that there was no level playing field. This, combined with increasingly open and visual superheroics that made human athletes seem lame... it all combined to implode the "professional sports industry."  Michael Jordan was one of the last big names, and he is more known as having to fend off tons of accusations of being metahuman, than being a great athlete/player.

Just a fun aside in our game, which was more of a "people with powers" than traditional superheroes. The effects of a burgeoning population of superhumans on earth was catastrophic and transformative over the many years of the campaign... so this "death of professional sports" was just a footnote.

The in-universe explanation is that Wakanda despite there outward display of isolationism has quietly been culturally influential in Africa for centuries due to being Africa's most affluent and stable nation.  So, these aren't Caribbean, Afro-American and Egyptian influences that have made there way to Wakanda, this are Wakandan influences that have spread to the Caribbean, Egypt and even America.

The out-of-universe explanation is that the movie makers were pursuing a Pan African/Afrofuturism vision and settling on one country or region of Africa to draw their influences from would have been picking a favorite and as such at odds with that vision.

So, how do you feel about the term pseudo-rapist to describe cat-callers or pseudo-murderers to describe people who sell guns?  Because I know people on the left who would be totally down with those terminologies.

Using the pseudo- at the front or -like at the back of some really heinous word such as terrorist, rapist, murderer or pedophile is a tactic of demonization.  It is saying that this group that you dislike is almost that other horrible group.  The idea being that we should punish our newly labeled pseudo-terrorist/pseudo-murderers/pseudo-rapist almost like we punish actual terrorist, murders and rapist despite their not having terrorized murdered or raped.  When activist use this tactic they are trying to be inflammatory.  When government this tactic they are usually getting ready to do some sort of crack down.  Both groups are trying to bend or break the truth in order to achieve an end.

What I am saying is Greenpeace either is a terrorist organization or they are not.  If they are not, then it is inappropriate to try to paint them as being almost terrorist  because the word terrorist is much to loaded to use in that fashion.
