I like this. And it also looks like this is where the poll is taking us.

It might be useful to look at the problem from the other end - what, "attacks" has the Earth survived? The biggest one coming to mind is the Chicxulb Impact. This was estimated at between 10^24 and 5*10^25 joules, which works out to  86 DC (if I've done the math right). While that devastated the biosphere, it wasn't even close to enough to destroy the planet.

Thank you for the lead. I'll take a look and maybe we'll get lucky with a good fit. Cheers.

I’d think that superpowers may have always been with us, in fiction, but since Champions focuses on Comic book tropes and gaming, then for the Wikia to be useful for most Comics gaming fans, then, Superpowers should be common public knowledge from 1938, with nods to limited powers from earlier years like, The Shadow, Doc Savage, and the like.

I also asked about hosting the wiki software etc. here at this site (i.e. doing an on-site wiki instead of an off-site wiki). He's not sure about that, but he didn't say no yet.

I think we should look at the poll results but try to incorporate as many ideas from this thread that don't contradict.

I usually make it so superpowers are a new thing, manifesting as the campaign started or only a few years old phenomenon.

But I often have pulp superheroes as part of the world's history, but without superpowers. Fedora-wearin', mask-sportin', gun-totin' superheroes.

Whoops. I voted 'Modern' but I meant to vote 'Recent.' I usually set my campaigns where superpowers are new developments.

So far no luck, but I did write to him. I also wrote to that other one...HeroMachine. Neither have responded yet. But I just consider this "round one" of contact. I can be tenacious.

I even translated the Fabrica email into Portuguese and then double-checked it by reverse translating it etc., but also provided the English version in the message.

In the 5e rules (p. 448) I found that a hex of stone is 19 Body, and a hex of dirt is 10. I went to 15, also considering that the core is pretty dense.

The volume of the Earth is 1,097,509,500,000,000,000,000 cubic meters

A hex of dirt is 2mX2mX2m so 8 cubic meters.

When I divide 1,097,509,500,000,000,000,000 cubic meters by 8, I get
    137188687500000000000

(I divided the volume in meters cubed by 8 meters cubed to figure out how many square hexes are in the Earth.)

    137188687500000000000  X  15 = 2,057,830,312,500,000,000,000 Body

    (Solo was right!)

But don't forget you'll have to subtract the Def first (4 or 5?). 😝

PS: But when you think of it, how much Body do the humans alone have when you add it up? When you think of that...

I go with small 'waves' all the way back to prehistory.  The last three 'waves' have come in the 90 years, and stacked on each one and have hit all the world.  The past norm was one at a time with 250 to 1000 or more years between them over only a small area, say only middle east.

The ranges are deliberately vague. Feel free to explain your choice in the comments.

I'm going with modern because it allows the world to feel familiar, without requiring explanation of why all these super-gadgets and strange powers haven't greatly affected history.

I tend to go with Modern but it is also the case of how. Spontaneous mutations ? Yes. The Gestalt waves as it is stated in the Gestalt book. Then there is the good old alien intervention/manipulation and Weird Science.

Also, Heroic Publishing had to change  Foxbat into The Flying Fox. So it is safe to assume they don't have the license to do Foxbat anymore.

Harley Quinn animated series This is fun but lacks a little something. Too much gratuitous death I think.

Van Der Valk season 2. Only 7 episodes but they changed the opening titles so that you could tell it was a different season. A number of different stories and not all had a happy ending but it was good. and again you have the theme tune.

The Battle of Britain. Three days to Save the Nation. This looked at three specific days. August 15th when the Germans launched Eagle Day trying to catch the RAF on the ground. August 30th when the Germans tried to swamp the RAF and September 15th when they tried mass attacks on London and ran into the Big Wings. The programme used interviews with family members of ground crew and pilots and their log books, photographs, letters and diaries which they were not supposed to keep. Sadly the pilots they covered were killed either in the battle or shortly thereafter. They also had an interview with a member of the ground crew, an armourer, who died before the programme was screened but he was nearly 100 years old.

Nate and Hayes Tommy Lee Jones stars in a swashbuckler set in the Pacific. Jenny Seagrove is the woman involved. The Germans want to set up an anchorage in the South Pacific and try to use Ponape which means they need to offer a sacrifice i.e. Jenny. Tommy and Jenny's husband to the rescue. It was fun.

Hanger 18. After a shuttle has an encounter with a UFO, the returning astronauts are grounded while scientists try to work on the downed UFO. And certain government people try to keep the things quiet. May have inspired Chris Carter for the X-Files.

Hacksaw Ridge  The conscientious objector who served as a medic in WW2 and saved the lives of over 50 men in his unit on the aforenamed ridge. The fighting scenes are savage. Well worth seeing.

Got it. Champions III, p. 6. One of the book's contributing authors used this and a few other in-game incidents involving his PC, Revenant, to illustrate character growth over a campaign. (The stories span a couple of pages in the book.)

I feel like this answer will go a long way to solving the IP controversy we're talking about on the campaign world wiki thread. I was trying to brainstorm what people are worried about, and I was like, "Oh yeah, Foxbat in Champions Online must be the reason everyone is concerned, because there was money in that."

It's like magic that you and I have a similar perspective on the IP angle for the project and you have connections to Bruce Harlick.

AFAIK Foxbat isn't currently a character licensed by Bruce Harlick. I was under the distinct impression DOJ Inc. owned the character outright, and when they sold the Champions IP to Cryptic Studios Foxbat went with it, with Cryptic licensing the use of the IP to Hero Games in perpetuity. Bruce's past licensing of Champions characters like Marksman and Flare to Eclipse Comics, and now Dennis Mallonee's Heroic Publishing, don't apply to Champions Online.

My favorite is A Private Little War. I watched it again recently because it's one of the episodes that seems like Kirk had to really think about a decision involving the Prime Directive etc. And the solution isn't perfect, but he refused to wash his hands of it. It kind of parallels a lot of real-world situations.

It is the episode that I most think of as tackling a tough no-win situation, like the Kobayashi Maru.

I think I would disagree. I agree with PBEM Guy, that this is a volunteer, creative effort, a public service to Champions, if you will, and as such, the IP is given away freely, so that Hero can publish Material from the Wiki freely and without restrictions. I think you underestimate the power of volunteer labor, especially when it is around something cool or useful. Lots of creative folk put out stories for free all over the internet. Citizen journalism flourishes around events they care about.  I think as long as people are credited, that is sufficient. this isn’t about them, it’s about producing content for Champions.

I will address the IP author rights issue later. No one is getting a Netflix deal from Champions products.

I wanted to return to a previous topic in city generation.  Marvel and DC took two separate approaches to locations. DC, the older company, took the approach of, “Real cities exist, but we don’t much talk about them, because our stories take place in Metropolis, Gotham City, Central City, and the like.”  Their geography was nebulous, and they had little consistency (until later).  Marvel Comics, with more emphasis on more relatable characters with flaws problems, took the approach of, “The world outside your door.” They used mostly real world or locations such as Manhattan, and Los Angeles. This served to keep characters grounded, and continuity consistent between writers.

This is going to be a large project in the end, built incrementally by volunteer hobbyists over time for the benefit of Hero. Why make things more difficult or confusing?  Google maps, are a fine resource for this, And there s nothing to say that when doing maps for publication, they have fictitious or renamed streets, slightly altered geography, or super hero tower headquarters in place of such-and-such bank building. But the rest of the city remains as it is, and even if not included, the GM can answer the question of if Hyperbrick smacked Arachnid Boy at the corner of Fairfax & Pico, would the knockback carry him all the way to Sepulveda Blvd. just by looking or up. This avoids the problem that derailed The Dome adventure with the niggling, Model Railroader derailing, that bogged down upon Hepzipah City.  All the questions about census, land use, major traffic corridors and public transportation have been answered already.

What is needed are playable assets and characters for GMs to Use in their campaigns, without needless world building that bring in inconsistency  between supposed products. We need to focus on adventures, villains, organizations, and gadgets useful to GMs, especially new  GMs.

Pleas, let us just use real world locations for now. Populate them with interesting, fictitious people, and go from there.  We want this to produce results, rather than being a layout that sits in our basement unfinished. Think of the real world as the location for the next big adventure, and worry about creating the Wakanda analogue later after we have some success under our belt.

    Create a Hero Theme Team
    Create a Villain Theme Team

When you find a character or organization you like, ask the author of the post if they'd like to donate the concept to The Wiki Project. And if they would like to donate, whether they'd care to personally do a more complete write-up or not.

The heroes and villains obviously don't necessarily have to remain on that suggested team. Many of those team characters are quite a bit more...whimsical...than others.
