To my mind, this election was a Fail as soon as the two major party candidates were confirmed.

As a father I kind of get where Diggle is coming from on an emotional level.  There's no 'tradesies' with children. Learning that I had a child in another time that was an entirely different child than in this one - and who was 'erased' by some moron who thought his grief trumped all other considerations - WOULD feel like someone had taken a child from me.

    "I had a daughter?"
"Now you have a son instead."
"But I don't have the daughter I would have had if you hadn't played god."
"What's it matter? You've always only known a son."
"But now I know about a daughter that I should have."
"Ummm .... call your first daughter Sarah and we're even?"
    *punch*

Now, if he takes that out on his son in any way ... holds any bitterness that this isn't how things are supposed to be, that he's living a lie and the son is the proof and constant reminder of that lie ... THEN he's an overeacting jerk.

No, the problem is that he'll never be impeached by a Republican House and a Republican Senate, unless he threatens their own profit margins.

Meanwhile, I found a fascinating story on the extremely profitable business of fake right wing news.

If true that would be the first tangible indicator that what his son said about him during the campaign was correct - he's not planning on handling domestic or foreign policy himself. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'commander in chief' role is the least interesting to him.

Which admittedly suits the style of an international CEO - he has people for that.  If he has the right people then why would he need to be troubled by the minutia of leading when he can just focus on the business plan and delegate it?

I'm not particularly opposed to him being a hands off president, to be honest. I wouldn't be heartbroken if he spent the next four years playing Minecraft at the desk.

Pence, on the other hand, is making time for his briefings. This seems to be falling in line with the rumors surrounding the VP offers--Trump would "Make America Great Again" and the VP would do the actual foreign and domestic policies.

In effect, he's outsourcing all of the hard, no-fun stuff to others, to concentrate on Presidential Cabinet Apprentice.

The following has absolutely no connection to the other conversation at hand. It is also not done in an angry, ironic, or otherwise undesired tone.

Why the scare quotes around my tag? Perhaps I haven't seen enough of your posts where you reference other users and the quotation marks are your standard. If so, I apologize. But I just don't quite get it.

I am going to assume that it is because my actual user name is in Japanese 薔薇語. But I do go by Soar so feel free to use that as it is. Likewise, Foreign Orchid and Rose are ones I have gone / do go by.

Anyway, back to the business at hand. ^^

At this point BOTH parties should be looking at each other and saying "My God, what have we done?"

Did the media cause the riots? No.  Did the parties cause the riots? No. Did Trump becoming president cause the riots? No.  Were they all catalysts? Quite probably.

American culture is steeped in standing up to bullies.  If you run a campaign where you're perceived as one the entire time based on the things you say and the things you don't say you can't expect people to stand down because it 'worked'.  You don't just get to make people literally terrified of your victory and expect their fears to magically evaporate with one vaguely political sounding speech. You don't get time to show that it was all 'locker room talk' and that the campaign you ran won't reflect your presidency.

Actions have consequences.  The way this campaign was run these riots were inevitable no matter who won - if the results were switched there's no way Trump wouldn't be calling for recounts in Florida and Pennsylvania at the very least, and no way his voter base wouldn't be on the streets demanding it (especially if he won the popular vote - both he and they would be able to point at that and scream 'see, see... the system IS rigged.')

There's actually quite a few Republicans on the NeverTrump side. A lot of us are more angry with the party than anything else - this caricature of a Republican candidate never should have won the primary.  I wasn't kidding earlier when I said that many Republicans held their noses as they voted for their parties candidate... it describes three quarters of my family. None of them actually support Trump and his rhetoric but all of us are ready to give him the benefit of the doubt (as a president NOT as a person. He earns nothing but contempt for the things he's said.)

You are a hundred percent correct - this mayhem must be stopped before more people get hurt.  The real question will be - based on everything else that led to it - how?  Condemning it will not work, and actions against it will make it worse.

tl:dr:  I wish people would chill out, but I understand why they feel like they can't.

If reasonable I will agree with his policies.  I will support his policies.  I will fight for his policies.  If successful I will praise his policies.

I will never agree with, support, praise, or fight for him as a human being.  There aren't enough inner cities schools in the world he could build, or press conference apologies saying 'I was just kidding', to make me forget or forgive the things he's said.

Why would you expect the DNC to respond any differently than the RNC did during Obama's first term? The ideological dissonance is if anything, even greater.

Playbook as taken from the loyal opposition is: dig in, rally the base, oppose everything, filibuster appointments, drag out process with parlimentary procedure, plan for next opportunity. Blame all failures on current administration. Emphasize successes are a result of previous administration policy.

Use media to portray things as worse than they are. Never negotiate on meaningful issues, but say you will so it plays with your base. Prevent SCOTUS appointments via filibuster so the next President can make a choice that'd be more centrist.

That's pretty palatable at the moment. We'll see if anything changes my mind in the coming months. I'm going to be strongly states rights ironically, living in my nice Bay Area, California bubble.

Figure even if the Fed changes rules on the ACA, pretty good chance the state covers it with their own replacement regs (already expanded Medi-Cal to undocumented kids, we love us some ACA in California). And so forth, I work in government and the tenor in Sacramento is panicky but ready to use that new reefer money (or whatever) to backfill if we have to prop up the crazy federals.

We aren't keen on this, but the nation will survive. And I don't see California being any more aligned to this administration than Texas was to the previous one.

Turnabout is fair play as long as it doesn't hurt the country. By all means filibuster every stupid or divisive thing that comes along but don't follow the path that's been taken far too frequently in recent history and reject a good idea based solely on who proposed it.

I hate when politicians do that - no matter their party affiliation.
