  1. Re: Campaign backstories I'm setting up a world right now that has superhuman activity just becoming prevalent in the present day. A galactic federation has been in alliance with Earth governments since just prior to WW2 to contain the superhuman poulation. The federation has convinced them that Earth's admission into said federation will be hindered by the imbalance of power all these random uncontrolled powerhouses would cause, so they've been slowly capturing and 'storing' them, with plans to awaken and indoctrinate them into the culture later. Unfortunately, the rate at which superhumans are appearing lately is getting to be too much to handle, even with alien tech and manpower. This is where our heroes come in... So this thread came along at a pretty handy time

Re: Patriotic Heroes I have a military based group called The Battalion, representing the individual ranks in the Army: Private Platoon - duplication, which I figured made sense for the 'grunt' rank. Corporal Hotwire - a cyborg gadgeteer Sergeant Stone - strongest member and made of living stone, discovered when her chute dumped on a parartroop jump Lieutenant Lucifer - since looies seem to be universally reviled, I made him a demon-possessed young officer with corresponding powers. Drawing a horned demon in fatigues looked kinda cool too. Captain Evac - mass teleporter Colonel Steadfast - nullifier of kinetic energy General Volt- manipulates electricity, and of course, gets called General Electric behind his back.

Re: Comics you loved...but apparently no one else did Thriller from DC - just an offbeat series with some neat little concepts that was never really given a chance Blackwulf from Marvel - Focused somewhat on the Deviants from Kirby's Eternal's cosmology, and introduced what could have been a major Marvel villain, Lord Tantalus. and little known indy book from the 80s, Power Plays by Mike Kelly, originally published by AC Comics. Funny and well drawn and had some original powers and situations. Plus, the second issue had a hilarious sendup of three prominent X-Men who looked like the Three Stooges.

Re: Sick of Wolverine I think the gist of reforming the Avengers was to try and somewhat duplicate the feel of the first Avengers issue, where some disparate characters were thrown together by a circumstance and stayed together when they saw how effective they could be. In this instance, Wolverine takes the Hulk's place as the dangerous, not-sure-we-can-trust-him member, but he's accepted for his experience and as Iron Man pointed out, his willingness to go further than most of the other members of the group. Really, I kind of like Logan in this setting, since it gets him away from the whole X-Mess. But I agree he could be tagged with the new indistry buzzword 'radioactive' - as in he needs to disappear for a while. Not likely to hapen though, as he's become nearly as great a cash cow as some of the Silver Age creations.
  8. Re: Doing the co-GM thing To quote Megaton Man: Woo! My thread came back from the grave! Thanks for the replies, I sort of figured I'd have to default to the 'onion' technique. I tend to enjoy that kind of round-robin storytelling anyway. All I've told him so far is I'd like for him to stay away from any alien-based plotlones, so that leaves a lot left to work with.

  11. I'm in the process of laying out a campaign world, and a buddy of mine and I have decided to trade off the GMing duties; I run a scenario for however many sessions, then he does the same. How do others who share the 'big chair' reconcile sharing ideas about the campaign world against 'spoiling' your co-GM's enjoyment of the game as a player? What secrets do you keep and how do you deal with a scenario of his unknowingly stomping all over your brilliant plot for the next session or worse yet, an over-arcing conspiracy you want the players to piece together? If he were just a combat monster kinda player, it might not be so bad, but he's a true RPG'er and likes all the mystery, drama, secrets and whatnot. I can't squelch his creativity because a) it's not right and it might lead him to suspect what I'm going for and ruin the surprise aspect of certain storylines. Whaddayado?
  12. Re: DC's Best Martial Artist Manhunter? Mark Shaw, right? Not the current one...and I don't even remember Shaw being a martial artist of note. He could probably hold his own long enough to get away from any of the above, but beyond that, dunno if I agree.
  13. Re: Most Embarassing Champions Moment My hero, Radar Rider, who had a vibrational power elemental control, had an arch-enemy by the name of the Tradesman, an assassin/merc type bad guy. He had contingency plans every time our group met up with him and riled RR to no end, especially since he'd failed to completely stop more than a couple of his plots. I wanted to see him brought to justice, true hero style since he was a casual killer with a smart mouth. After tracking him to his island base, I set out after him myself, finding him just in time to engage in a chase across the sky. I targeted his jet pack and he bailed out of the rig, deploying a hang glider to make his way back to the ground. I tried to entagle him with some vibro bonds, so he would glide painfully but not fatally to the ground. I blew my roll. So the Tradesman's glider folded and he plummeted to the ground, killing him. I was pretty irritated with myself and the dice at the time, since I really wanted to come off as a noble hero and see justice served. In the end, his body was stolen from the morgue and a few months later, a villainess named the Protege, with the same style of dress and tactics, began a campaign of revenge against me. The GM was pretty good at making sure mistakes came back to haunt you.
  14. Re: What was your first character like? The very first character was most likely a fighter for my first D&D game, and he was never played again. Once I got into a regular game, I ran a fighter with incredible stats who eventually became an anti-paladin. First Champs character would be a guy named Brigand, who was supposed to be an invulnerable martial artist with max human strength, and skilled up the yingus to be more of a fun support character than the archetypical hero. Being my first write-up, he wasn't as effective as I'd have liked, but I'm toying with re-doing him as an NPC for the campaign I'm creating currently.

  16. Re: Best SuperHero Fights ever The second fight between Magneto and the New X-Men, back around Uncanny 112 and 113. Mags ambushed and imprisoned them pretty easily despite their raw power, but once they freed themselves and came up with a plan and used some teamwork, they kicked the crap out of Magneto in fairly short order, forcing him to cut and run. This became the X-Men's standard operating procedure, it seems - Plan A: Get your butts kicked badly. Plan B - Use the XP from that buttkicking to come back and beat your foe in the next issue. The whole Masters of Evil storyline in Avengers where they attacked en masse and with a plan and came dangerously close to totally destroying the team. The three part Nefaria story in Avengers where he gained his powers. Thor popping in at the end of the issue, throwing his hammer at Nefaria, after all the others had been beat down. Great cliffhanger. I also remember being particularly impressed with the two- or three-parter in Amazing Spidey wherein the Tarantula mutated into a monstrous spider creature by the Brand Corporation (and Will o' the Wisp was also involved) that was pretty compelling also. Roger Stern script, JR Jr pencils from their heyday.
  17. Re: Favorite Marvel 'What If?' I just remembered an early one drawn by Scott Shaw! and, I think, written by Roy Thomas- What if a radioactive human had bitten The Spider? It was a funny animal equivalent of the Spidey mythos, with corresponding analogs of his foes - the Green Gobbler, Octo Doctorpuss- the Cat O' Nine tails, Culture Vulture and the Kingpig. Pretty funny and creative.
  18. Re: Favorite Marvel 'What If?' 'What if the Avengers had lost Operation Gactic Storm?' two-parter. It struck me as how the Avengers would have ended up if they were a Champs campaign run by our former GM.
  19. Re: Professor X vs Hector Hammond I always thought Hammond's opposite number was Modok, but Prof would screw up Hammond in a heartbeat. He's already got a lot fo mental flaws to exploit.

    Invasion!!

    Re: Invasion!! I'm in the process of setting up a campaign where the over-arcing story is going to be an invasion of sorts. Earth is being eyed for membership in a galactic federation, and is being unknowingly stewarded for this membership by a race who have assisted world leaders in secret since WW2. The two ways a planetary civilization can become a member is by 1) engaging in the above mentioned stewardship with a developing civilization and 2) being a civilization who has been conquered by a member of the federation. The more peaceful race got to us first and is slowly, painstakingly bringing us up to snuff, but there are others out there who wouldn't mind adding us to their empire forcefully, as it would gain them more political clout in the federation. Once certain politicians find out we can gain access to all kinds of tech and medicines and whatnot by being a conquered member, they want to start facilitating the process. The heroes will have to deal with all of this, plus an underlying conspiracy to squash the metahuman population that has been going on since the aliens first arrived (the PCs will be part of a Marvel Universe-like metahuman population explosion that occurred in the early 60's- supers were few and far between before the current day, but something has changed recently that sets off the rise in meta-manifestation).

A D&D game from long ago, where my character, who was the leader of the group, had become an emperor of sorts and was in the process of winning his new subject's favor. It's been our credo ever since: "You have to have the people behind you spiritually and in front of you physically." Another that comes to mind is a mage whose player was the Rob Liefeld of gamers (somewhat cool ideas, but no idea of the process of how to realize these ideas, but it didn't stop him from forging ahead anyway)- on our way out of town, a guardsman hassles us for exit tax or whatever, and Syrinx the mage balks and gets in a pissing contest with the guardsman. He casts a burning hands, blows it,and the guard quickly reveals that he is also...a werepanther. So we proceed to throw down, getting whupped on pretty good before my sentient sword tells me to throw it at the panther. I do so and cripple him, leading Syrinx (or Sphincter, as we'd come to call him by this time) to walk up to the wounded guardsman and while slitting his throat, proclaim: 'Now I have my revenge!'
