I like Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  Sure, it needs editing, but it was really well written.

I have to quibble with you on something.  The 3/5 compromise was a good thing.  It was intended to limit the voting power of the southern states in the US Congress.  We have proportional representation according to population in the House of Representatives.  The 3/5 compromise was a move against slavery.

good god these people are true idiots. foir a fraction of what he spent on this suicide ride he could have chartered a cessna and gone like 7x higher.

1800 feet?! I can get higher than that by standing next to my neighbor's window in summer and inhaling...

Let's face it, the racism in blazing saddles was insignificant compared to the campfire scene.

Well, as to the future and what may become the zeitsmode in it, who can say? I mean it's possible that there could be a major turn against capitalism in America due to it's increasing abuse of the majority if Americans. Could the word "corporation" become a dirty word in the future? Could be. Could "wall street" become considered something to foul to say in polite company? Who knows? Your example could come to pass but PETA is so far on the fringe I'm not sure pet owning would become considered slavery. But in a few decades, barring a huge halt in technical advancement, vat grown genetically engineered meat could replace actual animal meat to the point  that eating meat from animals may get you looked at like pond scum. To be honest if genetically engineered meat became a safe, efficient and palatable source of food that was viable I would welcome it as a way to end animal suffering in massive battery farms.

Touching on what you said here, in 1990 A.C.  Clarke wrote ”ghost from the grand banks" in which a person had a job using computer image manipulation to eliminate smoking in old movies as smoking had become so horrible to most people they could'nt   stand to even see people doing it. Christ, how far are we from that now?

Manson was a sad pathetic little insane  man who spent about 75% of his life in prison and died in it. There was no mystique to him. He had some form of charisma that appealed to a pack of mixed up alienated teens and used it to make himself into a little god to lost children. His whole life out of prison was a sad pathetic quest for attention and relevance. His plans for a race war were incredibly stupid and all he'll be remembered for is creating a lot of misery and suffering for his victims and those who followed him and ended up in prison forever too. In the end he suffered nearly 50  continuous years in a cold, hard, uncaring, grey steel and concrete warehouse waiting to die surrounded by people who had no real feeling for him. He never even had his mother's love from what's known of his early life.

Personally I'm glad he's finally free of the insane, miserable, loveless, empty suffering of his life.

And don't forget 'treating women like incubators on legs' and bigotry against the LBGT populace.  Oh, and erosion of the wall of separation between church and state.  If you're not white, rich, straight, male, and christian, voting Republican is voting against your own best interests, as far as I'm concerned.

Compared to the opposition party acceptance of Naziism, child molestation, and denying healthcare to children in order to pay for tax giveaways to the ultra rich?  Yeah, the Democratic message is absolutely better, regardless of how poorly presented it is.

As to the issue of people bristling about being accused of being evil because they are conservative, all I can do is shrug. In modern america the conservative movement sure seems to be involved in a lot of evil stuff. One of the first things Trump did was to sign an executive order allowing coal companies to dump poison in water poor communities had to drink because having to keep local water safe to drink was costing the coal companies money. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-16/trump-signs-measure-blocking-obama-era-rule-to-protect-streams

Recently conservatives allowed funding for S chip to expire taking healthcare away from millions of poor children. http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-chip-funding-20170929-story.html

The conservative government of Michigan has passed a law effectively ending democracy at the city level. When the public voted to repeal the "financial crisis management act" they simply put the law back into effect with a provision that the public could no longer vote it down. http://michiganradio.org/post/how-did-we-get-here-look-back-michigans-emergency-manager-law

Conservative governor Paul Lapage fought easy access to an anti overdose drug that can save people who OD on opioids because he felt keeping someone from during of an opioid of wasn't really saving a life. http://www.pressherald.com/2016/04/20/lepage-vetoes-bill-aimed-at-increasing-access-to-heroin-anti-overdose-drug/

So while some people may not like the idea of conservativism being labeled "evil" I have to say that from some perspectives a lot of people calling themselves conservatives are doing a lot of things a lot of people consider to be, well, not really all that good.
