In my D&D-became-Fantasy-HERO tables I've added saving throws as a -1 limitation that becomes a skill/stat contest between the caster and the person affected by the spell which approximates the saving throw mechanic of D&D.

This last episode had the dragon vs. ballista combat go more like I thought it would.

Holy crap is Danny going overkill.  The scenes with the dragon sweeping back and forth over the city like some Diablo 3 player lawnmowing a map to get all the xp and gold possible was just nuts.

The formation of a reluctant alliance of betrayers was pretty clear.  Jon Snow and Tyrion both realize she's too nutty to leave alive at this point.

Since Hound vs. Mountain didn't play out like I had hoped for my new wish list item for the gods of HBO is that Jon takes the throne by commanding Drogon to obey him.

Also, I want at least 1 scene were Jon gets absolutely immolated - preferably by dragon fire - and walks out unharmed.

I remember that, and yes, it absolutely was heroic, and moving. But I would argue that for that man to have gotten to that mindset, he must have gone through much fear and pain, maybe guilt, and found a way to rise above it. I think we were just witnessing the end of his "character arc."

I can't even recall the characters name from Saving Private Ryan, but the main characters drag their battered, demoralized asses to safety and this one quietly heroic guy walks through the lunch line to get some food and then gets ready to walk right back out into the action.

He gets asked why he's going back out when he could rest and he basically says if he doesn't do it then someone else will have to and off he goes.  No fanfare, no bravado - just doing what had to be done.

It's less dramatic if the hero doesn't have an emotional breakdown, but there are some bad-ass warrior-gene guys out there that can handle these hardships without having to shatter and reconstruct themselves.

There might even be a scene where she orders Drogon to kill Jon but he refuses.

You wake up with an armpit soaked in blood. A recurring rash turned out to be something called hidradenitis. One week in the hospital, four liters of IV's  and $ 300 a month of perscriptions that I'll be taking for the next four months minimum and I"m back at home. At least the nurses were nice and I lost 13 pounds.

The Avengers series has suffered a bit from the first one being so very, very good.  It was a terrific, rip roaring fun movie that got almost all the characters just perfect.  Even if the sequels had been better, they would not measure up to that first one, so they all suffer from comparison.

In fact, Hero System is so close to that, it's already there.   Advanced Players Guide II describes not one, but three detailed optional social combat systems, one Skills-based, one Talents-based, and one Combat Maneuvers-based.

I’ve seen it twice, and I realized something about it today.

Endgame isn’t a movie.  It’s the series finale of a beloved TV show.  Endgame doesn’t work at all as a stand alone film.  You have no idea what is going on, no one is introduced and nothing is explained.  No character goes through any sort of growth or character arc.  Nobody learns anything about themselves.

As a movie, it’s pretty bad.  But as a TV finale, it’s pretty awesome.  We already know these characters.  They don’t experience a character arc in this film, they’ve already experienced it over the previous 21 movies.  This is a loving farewell to these characters that we’ve grown to care for.  Some characters take their bows, and others come back for what will surely be the coming spinoff.  They don’t have to explain who Sam and Norm are because we’ve been watching Cheers for 11 years.

I don't think I'll want to rewatch Endgame the same way I do certain other Marvel movies.  The original Avengers, Iron Man 1, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Thor Ragnarok, and several others are great movies on their own.  I can watch them and have the full "movie" experience, with character arcs and all that good stuff.  Endgame won't have the same lasting rewatch value, just like people don't go and rewatch the last episode of MASH.  But it's a great event movie.

I really like this moment for the characters.  I don't like what the Russo's are saying after the fact, because it doesn't feel right.

The reason I liked that is that Thor was worried in that scene that Cap could potentially lift the hammer.  He was almost sweating bullets.

But in Endgame he was filled with -delight- that Cap could.  So as a story, it sounds much better that both of them became better people through everything they've been through.  Cap can become worthy (even the desire to rest, now, may be part of that), and Thor has become happy for someone else rising up to this stature.  That's a really important moment for both characters, who don't show a lot of direct, positive character growth in their movies.

I think-- we'll never know, because Steve doesn't answer those sorts of questions--that this is the sort of thing that "real weapon" and "beam weapon" was meant to address.

I never used (and rarely allow) either of those limitations, simply because there are both advantages and disadvantages to any special effect, and I have always felt that making those calls is specifically what the GM is for in the first place.

This is where we'd disagree. It is a killing attack... I'm killing the target, and the SFX is disintegration ray. That is classic Champs/HERO. To start over-engineering it to say, "Ok, that has to be this other more cumbersome build" is an example of exactly the issue I have with pushing HERO too far into complex simulation. Eventually everything is a Transform... Transform Character into Dead Character with a bullet in the heart... etc. The question is whether you want things simple " Cool... you have  3d6RKA Disintegration Pistol!" and let the story dictate the SFX interpretation, "Sure, you can zap a hole in the wall!"

... or... you begin down the road of, "Well... for all the things a Disintegration Pistol can do, you at least need a Multipower with RKA and Transform and... blah, blah blah"... which, to me, is where things can quickly go from "fun and clever build" to "over-engineered nightmare of a points kludge"   The taste for that varies. I tend to the KISS side of things.

Some viewers are upset by nearly anything as being upset has evolved into an art form over the last decade.

I will now proceed to be upset that Peter Dinklage, my favorite actor of the show, has to be surrounded by an ungodly number of tall people.  I will not calm down until there is equality among the tall and short.

What I want to happen, so badly, is for Sandor to win with fire.  It would be so fitting to destroy his brother the same way his brother scarred him mentally & physically for life.

Even more fitting if this involved a flaming sword as Sandor became a chosen one of the Lord of Light.
