  1. Re: Your character's pet peeve(s) I'll buy you an lemonade, then! (Hastily changing the subject) Do you like the car? It's a classic... you know, classic car for a fossilized man. Yes, I'm about your dad's age... (To himself) And I'm old enough to actually be her grandfather. Teen-agers look so much more mature than they did in my day...God, I'll have to start asking for photo identifications now!

  3. Re: Your character's pet peeve(s) Deuce: Where do I begin? -LOUD rock music -Badly prepared meals (he's had simple meals with cheap ingredients that were excellent, and so-called "cordon bleu" meals that he assumes came from the wrong end of the kitchen, the one with the rubbish bins) -Indifferent quality in anything -People who make assumptions about old people as incompetent, or try to judge the past by excessively high standards of the present -Losing when he knows the other guy/gal is cheating -Members of a gender who think they can do everything the other gender can do (yep, it's sexist, he was born in 1922, whattaya gonna do?) -Political correctness -People who rely on technology for everything in their lives -Enemy agents from his past who don't seem to realize the Cold War was over almost 20 years ago -Directly threatening the world (and especially Britain) with imminent destruction

    Pulparize It!

Re: Pulparize It! The Hunt for Red October: Jack Ryan discovers that Kapitan Markus von Rambusch intends to defect in the latest Kriegsmarine U-Boat, because von Rambusch's wife is being persecuted for having Jewish blood... Unfortunately, Ryan's superiors resist him at almost every turn, and his quixotic mission is placed in the hands of the crew of the Macon-class zeppelin Dallas, the only vessel capable of tracking the untraceable sub. Meanwhile, von Rambusch is having problems of his own...most of his crew are still loyal to the Fuehrer, and he must also convince Ryan and the crew of the Dallas to rescue his wife, who is only days away from being killed by the Gestapo...
  5. Re: Approved by the Comics Code Authority Wait...how many times did Deuce use the Lord's name in vain? A Million and Six?... Jesus Chr...(the rest of this entry blocked by the CCA) OK, a million and seven... Considering my character is not-so-loosely based on Ian Fleming's James Bond, the CCA would a) severely cut back on his cold-blooded violence:bmk:, and wreak havoc with his sex life. Also, they'd probably dislike his backstory, what with fairly glamorous villains, some of which have already grown wealthy with their ill-gotten gains. Not that the CCA would have to worry about his making sure crime doesn't pay, but they really wouldn't like how he did it. Nope, there's a reason why he's PG-13 (or even R) rated for Violence and Sexual Situations.
  6. Re: WWYCD: miscarriage of justice Deuce would try to "cheat him one better"- plot to set him up in an irresistible sting operation with plausible deniability, preferably one where he admits the corruption in the original trial... then give a slight (but satisfied) smile as he's hauled off to jail. Double jeopardy does not apply if the original trial was poorly administered. Of course, if he screws up too badly with only Deuce around by himself, he may be in a one way trip to the hereafter instead...where all the bribes in the world will not help him...
  7. Re: My Danger Sense Goes . . . Eventually, my character will develop the ability to sense danger, but only in dreams, so it will be imprecise and available only when he's asleep. Any really dangerous moments will play themselves out in an odd case of deja vu... I once wrote but never played a character who was a super-intelligent fighter jet aircraft (think of Knight Rider's KITT in the body of an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter) who had Danger Sense purchased as incredibly well-developed threat assessment software...
  8. Re: 8pt CSL Having played a "normal" for over a year now, I think I'll put in my tuppence worth. I have an 8-point CSL, which is almost as useful as my 10-point overall. I could argue even more useful, as I use it in combat for my character all the time. My character uses "cascading" CSLs, as follows: 2 pts: +1 with Pistol 3 pts: +1 with 3 skills (in this case, Stealth, Bugging, and Security Systems) 5 pts: +1 with Ranged Combat 6 points: +2 with 3 skills (Gambling, High Society, Seduction) 8 points: +1 with All Combat 10 points: +1 Overall Level It fits well into the character concept, as I have to constantly figure out where to put the SLs (DCV? OCV? ECV? What if I'm trying to seduce somebody while trying not to get hit?) I like the idea because I have to think as a player. Sure, I'd probably be better off spending the points and just boosting the relevant stats (EGO, DEX, INT, and PRE) but I wouldn't have nearly as much fun.
  9. Re: (really) Super Tuesday My character is well over the age restriction, but is a British national, and hence not eligible to run for President or Vice President. Other positions, of course, are not restricted by nation of origin, but even if nominated to be Prime Minister of the UK, he'd have to decline, as although he is certainly skilled in the political arts, he is also a 40-year anachronism! One in my party is a Chinese national, one is an alien (more to the point, she's a Predator), and one is a enchanted automaton. Other characters in my superhero group may be eligible, but probably not qualified or interested. They are either too young, too hedonistic, or too - well - intense to be a serious candidate public office.
  10. Re: Characters favorite manuever I knew one player's character (not in Champions) that had a similar thing for Buicks...he couldn't even pick up and throw a car unless it was a Buick (must have been a Psych Lim). Fortunately, he could throw a Buick a very long way. Unfortunately, my character's favorite maneuver right now is Abort to Martial Dodge, followed by a Tactics roll...he's getting much better at dishing out punishment at long range, and he's got a wicked Throw, but he still has an allergy to bricks ever since he went one-on-one with Grond. (Next time, the EGO Entangle...)
  11. Re: The Ultimate Minature Gadget For your firearms-based Dark Champions hero: Cornershot: Indirect (Same origin, any direction; +1/2) for up to 60 Active Points of weapons (pistols only), up to 16 Charges (+0) (30 Active Points); OAF (-1), Extra Time (Extra Phase, Only to Activate, -1/2) The Cornershot device is a real device which allows the user to fire around corners with a standard pistol. The pistol is placed in the device resembling a hinged There are also versions (one of which allows antitank rockets to be fired around corners!) but due to the limitation of the points of our MP we will concentrate only on the pistol version. This can accept most modern automatic pistols, up to .45 caliber. http://www.cornershot.com/ The extra time is optional, as the pistol or SMG must be inserted into the mechanism for it to work. This normally takes 5-6 seconds in combat for a skilled user, but could be done ahead of time. The resulting weapon is definitely not concealable under anything short of a heavy coat.
  12. Re: The 2006 Mopee Awards! Now I'm ticked off. They killed Blue Beetle? Man, I haven't read JLI in a while; now I'm sure I don't ever want to! In the old DC Comics game system, the GM allowed me to run Blue Beetle, as he was in the other character's point level class and I seemed to have a grasp of the character (I read all the solo series). He was a favorite of mine- sort of "Batman-with-Spidey's sense of humor" - and to see Ted Kord bumped off in favor of some other nebbish really makes me not want to read any DC comic for a while... Grrr! Tiger want slash!
  13. Re: Return of the blimp/zepellin Cool! The Zeppelin Company has also been back for a while, manufacturing several large blimp-sized Zeppelins for air touring, advertising and scientific research: http://www.zeppelin-nt.com/index_e.htm Still, it's good to know other people are beginning to rediscover the merits of these magnificent (and more importantly, fuel-efficient) aircraft.
  14. Re: PRE Attack Find Weakness? Thanks, everyone. Some things to chew on. You guys are good. The problem is how do you do a "cool customer"; someone whose presence is more than just being big, or godlike, or in a battlesuit, but without just jacking their PRE up to beyond-human, unrealistic levels? Where even a supervillain takes a step back to assess the situation. I mean, my PC is James Bond, not Batman. He has a PRE aside from his score even though he's only 6 feet tall and under 200 lbs. But to raise his PRE to 30, so that even the Doctor Nos and Ernst Stavro Blofelds take at least some notice (and the thugs flee), is not appropriate. He needs some other mechanism to simulate it. PRE is one of those characteristics I wish they'd better define in 6th edition. What applies to PRE from the rules applied to other characteristics or powers? What doesn't apply? For instance, is there "Armor Piercing" PRE?
  15. Sorry if this question has been posted before (someone should really post these to the FAQ), but I'm still sort of new to the system, and want to make sure my powers are legit. Can Find Weakness be used for Presence Attacks? It's my understanding it can theoretically be used for any sort of attack, but I just want the limitation of one attack, and two types of defenses - Presence vs. Presence+PRE Defenses. If the roll is successful, do I in fact halve the opponents' PRE, as that is their normal Defense against PRE Attacks, as EGO is to EGO Attacks/Mind Control/Mental Illusions? (I'm also getting Limitations such as Extra Time- the character cannot use it until he's seen his target operate for a while, being a careful superspy.)
  16. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads Great discussion of high-energy physics insanity, guys. I would add to the normal attack powers, also, a PRE attack from the sight of the bomb itself; the SFX are so stunning as to probably cause a typical human being to go running off or freezing in terror, even if they weren't hurt by the blast at all. The sight of all the injured would also cause PRE effects. Many people in presence of the multimegaton tests of the 50s report being terrified by these blasts even tens of miles away. (The only reason why some did not run is that there was nowhere on a ship or tiny atoll to run to.) A tactical atomic weapon would have a smaller PRE effect than the big megaweapons. Russians who witnessed the Bikini Atoll tests (which were 20-kiloton Nagasaki-scale blasts) from a long distance were unimpressed. Castle Bravo, the first solid-fueled thermonuclear weapon, had its yield badly underestimated, ran away to 12.5 megatons, and therefore had many involuntary close-up eyewitnesses. Witnesses had a feeling of it going on and on, of utter isolation and helplessness in its presence. Of course, a 20-mile high mushroom cloud would probably do that... In space, however, this would be a bit smaller of a PRE attack, because the fireball pulses once with no mushroom cloud, leaving only a cooling ball of radioactive plasma. In an upper atmosphere, in fact, a nuke can actually be quite pretty, if deadly- a so-called "rainbow bomb" effect happens in an already ionized environment. Those in the know, however, may still react negatively if they are near the target.
  17. Re: Susano's Guide to Adapting Fictional Characters to HERO Having actually used your site for the basis of my PC (which answers the rather odd question, what if James Bond was in a four-color, X-Men style comic book?), I cannot but enjoy your article. Now that you mention it, tho, I'll have to raise my PRE and COM a bit higher...(I've already got a Seduction of 18-!) And my character thinks fast on his feet- a spot of higher INT may also be in order... Boy, a lot to think about. Wish I could give rep, but I'm still a newb here.
  18. Re: Twist off the WWYCD Deuce would probably finish the Find Weakness buy he's been saving for, boost his CSLs or Damage Levels some more, put a few more points into his gadget pools, and then start saving for the fact that he's actually the living avatar of the voodoo god Baron Samedi, and therefore cannot be killed by conventional means.
  19. Re: The Super Darwin Awards OK... My super secret agent character (minus most of his gadgets) is in a locked room- alone- with Grond, as part of the villain's death trap scheme. He gets off a couple of martial throws on the big guy (which just serve to p*** him off), but using my considerable pool of SLs, I manage to keep dodging him. Finally, I figure out how to unlock the door to the room. However, rather than throwing Grond one more time, I went for the door right away. I forgot how fast Grond can run. I got the door opened OK- but then Grond hit me with a "4-arm smash" that sent Deuce reeling. Luckily for me, I still had part of the door in the way, so the blow was a glancing one, but I spun like a top, went down to OOC stun and even with body armor was down to 4 body. Fortunately, by then our mentalist was in the room I'd been KO'ed in and delivered a wonderful world of painful illusion to Grondie. A rather painful intro to Grond, don't you think? I spent most of the rest of the night getting sodas from the local vending machine and quietly kibitzing on another game in the club. Although Deuce was later restored to full health, this was not exactly my finest hour.
  20. Re: Your PC's might be underpowered if... Jawas defeated your team. Your team's highest point power? Really Bendy Thumb... Your power is useless against anything colored infrared...so anything that is warm, or even reflects heat will defeat it. Your team mentalist is Grond... Your brick gets his asteroids kicked by Smurfette... Your team genius is Barney the Dinosaur... Your government contact is Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp... Your team battle cry..."Not In The Face!" Team's highest point skill? KS: Sucking The Chrome Off A Bumper Hitch... Your team gets beaten by the 2007 Miami Dolphins... in mathematics. Your team's flying transport get shot down by a beagle in a leather helmet and goggles flying a doghouse... You are too busy taking notes on this thread for upgrade ideas to really enjoy it... Your team medic is being investigated by the AMA and the ASPCA... Your most powerful adversary is not Galactus, but Galaxative... The blue-green thing in back of the refrigerator is your team leader... Your team song is "If Looks Could Kill" by Heart. Unfortunately, they have in the past... Your team code is in Pig Latin... Your team alien is Jar Jar Binks... Your team gets Coleman Francis to direct your recruitment films (the poor man's Ed Wood!)
  21. Re: Mexican Vampires Grimble is normally my GM; he is currently dealing with Real Life and may not be available for some time. He caught a severe dose of Working Radiation... his 3d6 Vulnerability! But Grimble Will Return...For Your Web Site Only. Thank you for your concern, tho. Grimmy would appreciate it. I can also pass on any suggestions to Lady Grimble if you'd like! (Oh no...Ottercreekite! )
  22. Re: [Char] Dead Head That's not bad; other than the tweaks like Darkfire listed above, he'd fit right into my GM's universe on our Beta (NPC) team. I would actually build him with the Does Not Take Stun power, and a 20PD/20ED+ defense or Regen. Or perhaps lots of Combat Luck?
  23. Re: WWYCD: The Coverup Don't ask Deuce...he's good at keeping secrets. Too good. Now, he'd investigate the causes of the disaster himself, and if the hero was indeed obviously the cause, he'd probably take steps in the future on how to prevent the same thing from happening to his group. But if the villain could have conceivably caused it, and there is enough motive for him to do so, then that would be good enough for him. Besides, the villain could have caused the hero's new power trick to go haywire. Perhaps he was casting the spell/tuning the Megazap rifle/Saying "Sh-Boom"/Adjusting his aim when the villain struck him, or there indeed was a "critical mass effect" that caused the accident. At any rate, it was the villain's fault. If he had not been there committing his nefarious scheme, the hero would have never tried to experiment. He would press the sidekick as to details (sometimes they can get things wrong, or perhaps the sidekick has been brainwashed, or "mind-controlled", or whatever). Deuce's group would be a big aid to finding the truth- two of them have psionic powers. Deuce himself would try just to discuss matters quietly with the sidekick- perhaps over a couple of double bourbons or the equivalent if the sidekick is so inclined (and is legally able to imbibe). No judgments- just listening. He's actually pretty good at that, being a former spy and all. Perhaps the sidekick waited a year out of sheer guilt. Being a WWII vet, he understands that even entire cities must be sacrificed with innocents in them for evil to be defeated. Sections of London were made deliberate target for the Nazis to strike so that other, more critical areas could survive. It's truly horrific, sometimes, but the price of ridding the world of evil is almost more than humanity can bear.
  24. Re: [Character] Zombie Herve Villechaize It occurred to me that Christopher Lee played both Francisco Scaramanga and Saruman... Now I know who made Herve undead... Ladies and Gentlemen... the Littlest Uruk-Hai!
  25. Re: Character: Zombie Herve Villechaize Oh, I have got to find a place for this guy in my game...considering I'm running James Bond in the same universe, under a different GM (but he's not Roger Moore!) Creepy semi-comic relief and all that jazz. Perhaps I could put him with the Immortal Doctor No as his TV's Frank Noo! Nuke Des Plaines! DES PLAINES!
