  1. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... Wearing the Cape. Best superhero novel I've read so far. Reconstructs the genre.
  2. Re: Ctrl+V And why does the Emperor get a pass? Everyone is all "Oh, Obi Wan Kenobi lied to Luke, and Darth Vader was a mass murderer who somehow went to Jedi heaven just because at the last moment he switched sides" and nobody ever seems to make a big deal about all the bad stuff that the Emperor did! When's the last time, you heard anyone making the case that Emperor Palpatine was actually a villain?

  4. Re: What elements should a great superhero setting contain? There's also another issue. The battle with the Chitauri didn't last that long even assuming that we didn't see all of it. The SHIELD helicarrier carries at most a few hundred goons who are well-equipped by Earth standards but wouldn't have a technological edge over the Chitauri since the Coulson Revenge weapons aren't present in numbers. If they have more goons, then it takes time to move them, so SHIELD has the same problem the American military does in responding to this situation in force. And since Plan B involves dropping a nuke on the city if the Avengers can't close the door, it might be better to save the helicarrier goons for mop-up operations if needed.

  8. Re: What elements should a great superhero setting contain? As cool as a girl-version spinoff character they weren't even using can be. But that wasn't my point.
  9. Re: What elements should a great superhero setting contain? I don't see any point to that. Oracle is a cool character, someone who didn't let disability stop her from continuing the good fight. Once that coolness is gone, the computer doesn't serve a purpose.
  10. Re: What elements should a great superhero setting contain? Nazis.
  11. Re: What Makes An Iconic Superhero Costume? I have my doubts as to whether characters become iconic in the first place if their outfit is an eyesore.
  12. One of the many freebie downloads I have piled up is for one of the zombie games, a quickstart scenario in which the group all wake up in a hospital ward in perfect health and ready to make their way out of the hospital past all the zombies and try to find their way to freedom. And I was wondering, how does that work? There are several zombie stories in which one person wakes up from a coma to find that it has slept through the apocalypse. It helps skip past the awkwardness of showing how the problem multiplied out of control But how do a room of coma patients all wake up at the same time, all fit and healthy? The options that come to mind are: There was nothing wrong actually wrong with them. They were just the snatched-off-the-street victims of an organ-stealing scheme and woke up when the sedation pumps ran out of power or drugs. What was wrong with them was that they were infected with the same thing that makes zombies, but had an atypical reaction. They were the recipients of divine intervention that healed and reawakened them so they could do something about the source of the zombies.
  13. Re: Superheroes Sponsored by Corporations (Such as the NFL) Of course not.
  14. Re: Superhero settings vs People with Powers settings Except of course then there's no story. That's why there are two basic plotlines to PwP stories. One is, "superhumans living in hiding try to fight off the evil government/corporation looking to imprison/enslave them". The other is, "Superhumans living in hiding use their powers to assault and rob humans".
  15. Re: Adversarial Answers Yes, but "internet access" is not in fact a knowledge skill.

  18. Re: Ctrl+V I have watched how steadily the general feeling, as shown at elections, has been rising against Slavery. What a proud thing for England if she is the first European nation which utterly abolishes it! I was told before leaving England that after living in slave countries all my opinions would be altered; the only alteration I am aware of is forming a much higher estimate of the negro character

Re: Costumes Did you ever think about her being a foreign spy dressed up to look like an American flag suit superhero?

  22. Re: Adversarial Answers THe top reason is "hard to adjudicate" (which includes time consuming). Right after that is "nonsensical or incomprehensible" (and I include KS: internet access in that category). Then after that there's just things which annoy me. For example I am sick of Dial H For Hero characters. I could cheerfully go for years without seeing another staggeringly original "My character can turn into 12 different characters, one for each sign of the Zodiac" The whole point of having a superhero team is to rely on each other to provide diversity. OK these characters tend to be garbage anyway just because of the point cost issues, but even if they weren't, they just rub me the wrong way, and I've seen so many of them.
  23. Re: Superheroes Sponsored by Corporations (Such as the NFL) It's on the Viz anime site, so Canadians can't see it.

    Costumes

Re: Costumes G-Girl had a series of different costumes, which makes sense since her powers didn't protect them. As far as best, I'm going to go with Spider-Man out of practical reasons. Why is it a garish red and blue? Because it was originally a show-business costume. It's a stretchy leotard because that's what works with his powers. The big mirrored eye holes avoid interfering with his peripheral vision, and nobody would be able to recognise him except by his voice. I would not give the nod to Wonder Woman. Honestly her classic costume is awful. She'd be popping out of her bustier ever time she made a vigorous movement. But Looker's original costume was atrocious in colour and design. Fortunately she could use her power while standing very still, since that kept her high-heels from killing her.
