“Alrigh', Mr. Ross. If'n ye'll step inta the scanner, we'll get this party started. The scans will allow us ta have some idea o' the things that be done ta ye.” Archie looked at the device with four arms hanging down to the floor. “What will it do?” “In and of itself, it will give us a 3D render of your body. Layer by layer. It's a broad spectrum scan, Archie,” Kris said. “Nervous?” Kris smiled reassuringly to him. “Just a wee bit, Doc.” “Whene'er your ready, Mr. Ross,” Irish said. Archie stared at the machine. “Archie. I prefer Archie, Dr. Kendall.” “Very well, Archie,” Irish said. Nightwing pushed Archie towards the platform. “C'mon, Bug. I don't have all day.” “Mr. Michaels!” “What?” “If'n ye canna show the man proper respect, then perhaps ye should depart.” “I'm showing the bug all the respect he deserves!” Irish stood up and looked down from the observation deck where the controls were. “Mr. Michaels, git out o' me lab!” “Brad, leave,” Kris said. Nightwing looked up at Kris. “I'm on babysitting duty.” “And I've just relieved you of it. Archie doesn't need a sitter.” “I don't trust him!” The lab door opened. Ash and Trese walked in. “Your objection was noted. Your continued objections have been noted,” Ash said. “You were asked to leave.” “But...” Eyes flashing purple, Trese encased Nightwing in a ball. “What the...?” Trese pulled her hand back, palm forward. Nightwing rolled towards the door. When he was in the hall, Trese gave the ball a push. Nightwing rolled away.

“Mind if we join you?” Charley tore her gaze away from the city. She blinked and then realized it was Marlene and she had Angel in tow. “Not at all. What are you two up to?” “Worrying about you,” Angel answered. “Me?” With a smile, Charley laughed. “I'm fine.” Marlene and Angel pulled chairs out on either side of Charley. “I've got a question for you,” Marlene said. “What would you do if you knew where Rachel was buried?” “She's in an unmarked grave,” Charley responded. Marlene smiled. “That isn't an answer to the question.” Charley looked down at the remains of her lunch. “I never gave it much thought. I lost any hope of actually finding where she was years ago.” “We found her,” Angel said. “Her grave isn't unmarked. I've had a temporary marker placed,” Marlene told her. “Figure out what you want to do. Whether you want to move her or have a permanent marker placed where she's at.” “How can you be sure?” “It wasn't easy,” Marlene said. “Lost records and such. That's why I enlisted Angel's help.” Angel smiled. “As for being sure,” she placed a strand of braided hair in Charley's hand. “You could have told me before. I would have found her for you.”

  11. “Just walked right up to you in a bar as easy as you please. Some people got all the luck,” Archie said. He held the door open for Charley to pass through. Smiling, Charley said, “She's been a good friend. Not as twisted as someone would have liked.” She pulled the key fob out of her purse and the headlights on the SUV flashed in time with the beep. “Need a ride anywhere?” “Nah. Got my own.” Archie stripped off his sweater. “Hold this a sec.” He held it out to Charley. She accepted it. He touched one of his zappers and his wing shell flew down off the roof. It aligned itself with his back. Charley heard pops when the connectors mated. “Sweater,” he held his hand out for it. With the shell in place, he tied the sweater around his waist. “Maybe I'll see you tomorrow.” Charley looked confused. “I thought you were turning yourself in?” “I am. To the Guardians. From there I will be escorted to the courthouse. To be met by a Capt. Bressler.” “She's a good person.” “Me being the badass that I am, I require an escort of the highest caliber,” Archie joked. Charley laughed. “Zappers and the shell will be taken into custody by the Guardians. I don't trust the police not to sell them to someone that will want to reverse engineer any of it.” “I understand. I should be heading back,” Charley said. She turned to the SUV. “Charley!” She turned back. “Yeah?” Archie wrapped his arms around her and laid his head on her chest. “Thanks.” Charley smiled. Her own arms went around Archie. “Any time.” Archie stood there, not letting go. “How long are you planning on standing like this.” “I'm debating on having a Louie DePalma moment. Weighing whether or not the pain will be worth the seconds of having my hands on your butt.” “Discretion, Archie.” He broke away. “Yeah. You're right.” His wings started beating and he took flight. “Sexy legs, though.” Laughing, Charley climbed in her SUV and drove away.
  12. Tossing her sea bag into one side of a booth, Charley took a seat. A server came by and took her order. Putting her back to the wall, Charley stretched one leg out. The other was bent with the knee up. She turned her attention to the TV. A gorgeous woman with honey blonde hair walked past and slipped into the booth beside the sea bag. “Who are you and what do you want?” The woman smiled. “My name is Angelique. I want you to come to work for me.”
  13. Between cleaning out Teddy's safe and Brennan's retirement cache, Charley had spent the rest of the night counting money. She counted it into seven even piles. Two of the piles went back into Brennan's duffle bag. Charley packed her clothes into a sea bag, dropping the duffle bag in about halfway through the packing. The sea bag was easier to handle alone than several suitcases. There was a knock on her door. Charley peeked through the peep hole. Em stood on the other side with other women. Charley opened the door. Four of the women she was recruited with looked on her with awe. “Come on in,” Charley said. She indicated the money on the table. “Each of you gets a stack. Take your lives back. Get out of Vegas.” “Where did you get the money?” one of them asked. Charley gave her a pointed look. “What will we do?” another asked. “Whatever you want,” Charley answered.
  14. Teodoro DeSanto, Teddy D in the business, hid under his desk. The sawed off double-barrel shotgun shook in his hands. Gunshots sounded on the floors below. Pistols, automatics, shotguns all barked, and slowly fell silent. The door to his office opened. “You can come out now, Teddy. All the fireworks are over,” a woman said. “Who are you?” Teddy said coming up from under his desk. He pointed the gun at the costumed woman. “I'm sure as f*** not Batman, Teddy. I need you to do something, Teddy. Something really important with your lousy life. I need you to turn yourself in. This just because I'm feeling generous tonight. In addition, you will supply whatever necessary evidence that proves Brennan is dirty. Are you with me, Teddy?” The shotgun barked. Titania dusted her chest off and smiled. “Did that make you feel better?” “I'm sorry,” Teddy whined.
  15. Titania wanted to crush the car with Brennan in it. It would be so easy for her. She knelt down and grabbed the window opening. She yanked the passenger door off. Brennan reloaded and pointed his gun at her. Titania smiled. Brennan got one shot off before she bent the slide and barrel beyond the ability to release another bullet. Brennan's finger was broken in the action. He screamed. “Hello, asshole.” “I'm a cop!” “You may carry a badge that you've disgraced many times over the years, Brennan, but you're no cop. Cops don't murder.” She noticed the duffle bag. Titania pulled it out of the car. Brennan made a grab for it. “Cops don't take payoffs.” Standing up, Titania juggled the car so that it was upright. She slammed it on the street, rupturing two of the tires. She peeled the roof back. She grabbed Brennan by the shoulder. “Charley, don't!” “Rachel,” she whispered. She looked up and down the street. There were a few gawkers. No one stood out. No one attempted to help Brennan. Titania let her chin drop and she closed her eyes. When they opened, she said, “Your lucky day, Brennan. Your last lucky day if you don't do what I tell you to do. You're going to turn yourself in as a dirty cop. You only get one shot at this. The next time you see me will be the last day you see anything this side of Hell.”
  16. Detective Kyle Brennan thumbed through the envelope of money before dropping it into a duffle bag full of similar envelopes. He pulled his cigar out of his mouth and flicked the ash out the window. “Almost time to retire.” The bag had grown heavier over the years. It rarely left his car. Movement in the side view mirror caught his attention. A woman walked the street under the lights. Attractive tousled blonde. Nice figure. He filed it away and looked out the windshield with a quick glance out the rear view mirror. Two more stops to add to his cache and he was done for the night. At least with his unofficial job. He had reports to file back at the station. “Nice car,” the woman said. He turned to look out the window at her only to find his car tumbling through the air. It rolled over twice and landed on the roof. Dazed for a moment, Brennan fought to clear his head. He saw legs walking towards his car. Dark boots with dull metal knee guards. His gun fell into his hand. Brennan emptied it. The woman didn't even slow. The bullets ricocheted everywhere. Including back towards him. He covered his face with an arm.
  17. “It took months. I grew two feet and put on proportional mass. When it was done I ended up going through several months of physical therapy learning how to pick up things without breaking them. There were tests to see how strong I was, how resilient, and all the other fun stuff. When Ulysses was satisfied...” * * * * * “What happens now?” “You have several new outfits tailored for your new measurements. Are you sure all you want is boots?” he asked. Charley set her wineglass down. “I don't see a lot of need in my future for high heels.” “Nonsense. A woman as lovely as yourself should display her beauty. Nonetheless, aside from your new uniform, you will find two pair of biker boots. Have you decided where you will go?” “Back to Vegas,” Charley said. “I need to find Rachel. I need to find out what happened to her. Not that I don't believe the reports you gave me. I just need to confirm it with my own contacts.” “I fully understand. I have to say, I will miss our dinners.” “Thank you. For not letting any of your men...” Ulysses waved it away. “You were my guest regardless of how you got here and why.” “What are you going to do with the project now?” Charley asked. “A full review of the data and results. Make some adjustments for another subject. If you will excuse me, Charlemagne. I am growing tired. Safe travels, my dear.” * * * * * “On the plane I was giving several thousand in cash. The trip back was faster. There was no cutout flight. It was direct. The plane flew nonstop. When I got to Las Vegas, I found a place to hole up. A place that I could use to start looking around.” * * * * * With walking and taxis being her only modes of travel. Charley ate a lot of carry out and bar food. The bars she frequented were places she remembered. Not the cop bars. Not the ones the girls would stop in occasionally looking for tricks. She avoided the Strip completely. Her burger wasn't bad. The fries were a tad overcooked. The TV was on the news. “...County sheriff had this to say: 'We were lucky they were in the area training. When asked, they readily jumped into the task of helping to find the missing hikers. It was easier for them with two people capable of flight to navigate the canyons and the trees.' 'Did they say what they call themselves?' 'No. They are Guardians.'” A tentative voice called, “Charley?” drawing her attention from the TV. Glancing at the woman and recognizing her, Charley said, “Hey, Em.” “You've changed. I wasn't sure if it was you.” “I had a little bodywork done.” She drained her beer and got the tender's attention for another. Slipping onto a bar stool, Em said, “I never expected to see you back in Vegas.” Charley gave Em a studied look. “I'm looking for Rachel.” She looked back at her plate, ran a fry through ketchup, and bit into it. “I'm sorry, Charley. She's dead.” Charley nodded. “I know. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop looking for her.” “When she died, I got some of the stuff from your place. Before Teddy D or that cop tossed the place. I took her money stash. I've got that box of photos and stuff.” “Keep the money. I'll want the box of stuff. How many of the other girls are still around?” “All of them. We only lost you and Rachel.” When the tender brought her beer, Charley said, “Get her whatever she wants.” Looking at Em, she asked, “You hungry?” “I could eat,” Em said. The tender took her order. “Em, can I trust you?” “I'd like to think so.” “What about the other girls?” Em shook her head. “A couple maybe. Then they may be looking to make their own lives a bit easier.” “Who found Rachel?” “Brennan did.” Charley's hand flexed and the beer mug shattered.
  18. A long time ago, when the earth was still green And there were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen They'd run around free while the earth was being born But the loveliest of all was the unicorn There was green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born The loveliest of all was the unicorn Now god seen some sinnin' and it gave him pain And he says, "stand back, I'm going to make it rain" He says, "hey, brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do Build me a floating zoo" And take some of them green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born Don't you forget my unicorn" Old Noah was there to answer the call He finished up making the ark just as the rain started fallin' He marched in the animals two by two And he called out as they went through "Hey, Lord" I've got your green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn I just can't see no unicorn" Then Noah looked out through the driving rain Them unicorns was hiding, playing silly games Kicking and splashing while the rain was pouring Oh, them silly unicorns There was green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees Noah cried, "close the doors 'cause the rain is pourin' And we just can't wait for no unicorns" The ark started movin', it drifted with the tide Them unicorns looked up from the rock and they cried And the waters came down and sort of floated them away And that's why you'll never see a unicorn, to this very day You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born You're never gonna see no unicorn
