Musings on Random Musings

Re: Musings on Random Musings

So... there I was looking for something to watch. Its been a hard day. I can't concentrate.

I thought, maybe I can find a watchable horror film with no depressing themes (easier said that done).

I skipped through a bunch of titles. Lesbian vampire killers was right out. Too many enticing jiggly bits promised there. A lack of interest in nazi zombies ruining people's ski vacations didn't do it for me. Thus, Dead Snow was out. Amateur Porn Star Killer3 sounded base. Feast 3: The Happy Finish could have used a more creative name, especially since it was marketing as horror-comedy. I mean, why not Feast 3: The Final Course. The list of badly titled movies with low budgets and horrible premised began to mount. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse I run across... drum roll please...

TERROR AT BLOOD FART LAKE

I kid you not.

One more time for posterity: Terror at Blood Fart Lake.

Its a real movie: http://www.watch-movies-online.tv/movies/terror_at_blood_fart_lake/

I howled with laughter just reading the title. Here's the description someone posted:

The Legend of Blood Fart lake is...well...legendary! When a group of college kids head off to their friend's cabin for a little high octane sex weekend they will get more than they bargained for in the form of the evil Scarecrow killer, Jimmy Van Brunt! Seems like no body is safe at spooky cabins in the woods by the lake these days. Experience characters that make you want to howl with laughter and constipation! Witness deaths the likes of which you have never seen before! One part Friday the 13th, One part Ernest Goes To Camp and 3 parts Cream Cheese, wonder aloud who will be still be alive by the end of this Terror At Blood Fart Lake?!

I mean, are there people actually making money with these films?

And if so, why am I working for a living?

Go figure: I decided to try another category.

Don't be so hard on the movie. It has a 2.6 Star rating over at IMDB.com -- and that's after it's shot up 44% this week! :ugly:

I can't help but wonder if there's any actual conversation in the "Political: U.S. House - Health Care Bill has passed" thread at this point or if it's all just shouting at walls.

I haven't looked in that one yet, let alone posted there. I can recognize the spawn of Eris when it springs full-blown out of the Void.

Re: Musings on Random Musings

The number "15.384615384615384615384615384615"' date=' multiplied by 13, results in exactly 200 (If the calculator doesn't lie)[/quote']

Actualy, 200 / 13 = 15.(384615), a repeating decimal.

     15.384615
    _______________
13 |200.00000000000
    13
    ---
     70
     65
    -----
      5_0
      3_9
    ------
      1_10
      1_04
   --------
         60
         52
      ------
          80
          78
        -----
           20
           13
         -----
            70
            65
           ----
             50

How did I find that out? Well, when making equipment, I use Active Points * Real Points = Cost; a rather effective shortcut. However, Charges requires its own rule - Using that equation, the resulting cost of a potion (1 NR Charge) tends to be within 1/3 to 1/5 of the total cost. Obviously, this is far too high - So I divide the AP by the Charges limitation alone.

So, I was calculating for the Potion of Giant-Size (Growth, Enormous), which lasts one hour. 50 / 3.25 * 13...

...Checked three times, same answer. Cool.

You've just experienced a shortcoming of most calculators -- an inability to recognize a repeating decimal. Sorry. :o I hope this doesn't throw your calculation off.

And a Potion of Giant-Size... what? Pepsi? Is this a Super Big Gulp? :P

You know, I've heard of folk occasionally refer to gaming in religious terms, both jokingly and not, but it just hit me that the similarity has a deeper source. I think we, gamers, are essentially the same sort of people who used to start religions. Right down to the bickering over minutae, getting all heated up about rule changes, mis-interpretations, mistranslations, different editions...

Gamers are post-industrial holy men.

Jesus was a LARPer?

And the G.o.D.'s son to boot!

1) Maybe. (referring to the analogy between gamers and starting religions). I tend to think we are wizards of the ancient tradition.

2) You assume that Jesus intended to start a religion. ;)

3) Jesus was a LARPer? Nah, Jesus was a feminist.:P

Re: Musings on Random Musings

...So I was sitting there, thinking of which odd and unusual intelligent species to include first in my roguelike, when the obvious answer came to me:

..."Humans"

...I've yet to include them first, in a roguelike.

What's a roguelike?

And you say "A rogue is like a thief, but in a different edition" I'm going to feed you to the palindromedary

Jesus didn't found a religion. He was the foundation of a religion, which is a different thing. Paul is closer to being the founder.

And whatever else it is, Role Playing has given us a splendid and powerful new metaphor for...well, for life, the universe, and everything.

There is a reason why I like the term Game Operations Director, and the acronym G.O.D.

I think it points to important but difficult to express truths about the role of Creation, whether we're talking about creating a game or a universe.

And I find Bazza's comment interesting:

1) Maybe. (referring to the analogy between gamers and starting religions). I tend to think we are wizards of the ancient tradition.

In light of the fact that, over 25 years ago one of my teachers and mentors expressed the idea that role playing games were actually very good training for a potential magician.

The palindromedary wonders if I should break this out into its own thread.

It's a style of game based on an old game called Rogue, wherein a randomly-generated character delved into a randomly-generated dungeon to retrieve the Orb of Yendor.

Basically, it's a replayable RPG with randomly-generated terrain, items and monsters being most important. Gameplay and replayability are emphasized; graphics are downplayed, to the point where keyboard text is often used in place of graphical tiles.

A modern version is Adom, which features an overland map, hundreds of items, hundreds of monsters, a hundred or more randomly-generated and a few static dungeon maps and at least five different game endings, including Good, Neutral and Evil. There's a large selection of races and classes, with the option to fully randomly generate. It generates your stats based on a randomly-generated life-path, then presents a brief character history. It also has mini-quests and over-arching quests and a complicated enough character development system.

Re: Musings on Random Musings

Something in this Townhouse is causing us both to sneeze and cough and giving OddHat sore throats. I hope the Air Purifier Ionizer I just plugged in in the bedroom helps.

Good luck with that. Most people don't realize what allergies are like.

For those who don't have them, it's like being sick, *All the time!*.

I hope it helps too, but fyi:

Ozone generators make Ozone, which is (for ground-level atmosphere) a pollutant.

Breathing ozone can trigger a variety of health problems including chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, and congestion. It can worsen bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. "Bad" ozone also can reduce lung function and inflame the linings of the lungs. Repeated exposure may permanently scar lung tissue.

I sneeze and have itchy eyes the first few hours I'm around cats these days but it fades ...it's only cats.
