I've read accounts of similar sounds in scientific journals (Probably Science Digest back when it was still in print) attributed to interactions between solar radiation, the resulting aurora, and the atmosphere below. Solar energy is quite powerful and violent, and it's not surprising that when waves of energy crash against the shores of our atmosphere sometimes we get to hear the "surf". Very neat. I have experienced something similar while growing up in Texas. I would hear what sounded like a jet, and when I went outside could not at first find it in the sky. Usually I could eventually find it on days that were (very nearly) completely clear. I could track the apparent source of the sound across the sky, and then by "leading the target", I could be looking in the right place to see the odd glint of sunlight on metal. Once I had my eyes locked onto the tiny black dot of the high-altitude jet, I could easily see that the airplane and sound moved in sync. At the end we have Kara getting onto a production line. Since this is a domestic presumably there wouldn't be much super about the robot compared to society. That said you could have a great cyberpunk story coming out of the set up provided. Likely with an arc that involved a lot of running and hiding after being found to be defective. She has self awareness, she could easily have morality and be moved to act on it.
