WWYCD?: The blatant-ening.

Re: WWYCD?: The blatant-ening.

For some things' date=' the only "constructive criticism" is satire or parody that demonstrates why they are idiotic in the first place.[/quote']

For some people, Metaphysician - not "things". It's the same difference, again, as between fact and opinion. Perspective matters.

At times, I have seen no way to criticize an idea constructively through any means other than a proof-of-concept story that illustrates the flaws I see. But this doesn't mean that no other way exists; just that I wasn't able to see one. Sometimes, one will occur to me later on.

So, when I see a satire or a parody, I take any opportunity I can find to help out by articulating the flaws I see. Or, if I can see them but not any other way to do it, I may respond in like vein and continue the parody or satire.

Am I the only person who saw the OP as hilariously funny?

I enjoyed the meticulously explicit opening post as well, but found myself disappointed with how Pendaran failed to maintain that theme. For instance, he could have responded to criticism with:

"Frustrated with not being able to trick his players into answering the way he wanted them to, the GM invents new obstacles to foil their unexpected solutions. Frustrated with being unable to make YOU accept his beliefs about WWYCD's, he abandons his scenario and resorts to invective."

To be effective, a parody has to be funny and a satire must provide some new insight into the original subject matter. But instead of continuing the 3rd-person narrative which had served him so well, Pendaran chose to show (not tell). This was neither funny nor new.

I also thought the "Slatyn Yar breaks 4th walls" could have been done better. That approach relies on the player accepting the GM's authority, which - at the moment a table is being flipped over - has just been rejected.

A more realistic approach, IMO, would have been to say "The GM, having anticipated this reaction, took the precaution of bolting his table to the floor." ;)

In retrospect, I'm startled that noone has put this disclaimer into a WWYCD thread before.

To note, the original theme was posted, Pendaren posted it in his own words. And he does have a sense of humor, as anyone whose read more then just his posts here.

But considering the posts lately used against people lately have stripped me of patience, they've likely done the same to his sense of humor. Perhaps if the people responding to threads would do less "You are a munchkin" whenever someone comes up with something different then what they expected. Given that two of my major characters can survive nukes, I hate being told what they can't do. I can tell you that myself. And quite frankly, I'm a vampire gm, I can come up with tons of no win situations on my own, thank you. I can recognize them quite fine, thank you.

Oh' date=' and by the way, thank you Nexus and Pendaron for relieving my boredom here at work for the five minutes it took to read your posts. Classic![/quote']

I deserve that for getting baited into that mess in the first place. Good to know something productive came out of it for someone :)

My gratitude was sincere. You see, I'm evil and take sustenance from conflict.I have embraced the fact that the internet (and online forums in particular) are a place of anonymity fueled immaturity, ignorance, bile, and hate. If I could only figure how to work death into that list of woes I would be even happier. If we could somehow strip the place of it's anonymity a bet we could generate lots more forum fueled violence.

Mmmm, your souls taste like peeps, can't eat just one. :eg:

The Internet is for porn... and evil?

It all makes sense now...

What the hell does "blatant-ening" mean?

That's all I want to know.

Seems to be a poke at White Wolf's stereotypical titles like Changeling: The Dreaming since their games are known for featuring moral "No Wins" and not a little railroading.

Ok - the OP needed to vent. Happens.

The starter post was pretty funny.

It was almost a "could you go through with it?" type question. But you know - organs outside the body is pretty much a near instant death situation. So ya lost me really.

Ah - if I had to answer?

Kids toast.

From the thread title I couldn't take this as anything but a rip on White Wolf whose story lines are, well, a lot like that first post.

**Dr. Zoidberg Voice** "Porn! What! When did this happen! Where do you find it! Somebody tell meeee!"

There was this rumor floating around about the palindromedary, but he took Lucius to task for it.

That's a joke above' date=' please no one try to tell me.[/quote']

Not to worry, I only told your Doctor Zoidberg voice. Just don't ask him about the video ;)

Brother Jim kills the child (one life for billions).

Brother Jim then beats the snot out of Jesus.

Brother Jim then goes to hell to beat the snot out of the demon and feed it to little demons so they grow up big and strong.

Brother Jim then Unspeaks the True Name of the child to end its suffering.

Then the player of Brother Jim will feed the GM large quantities of both Ex-Lax and Immodium.

Also, if you didn't need food or water before, you do now. Also, there is no escaping from the desert in any way, or making food for yourself, or water, or finding food or water. You can only keep walking to get out. Also, even if you normally can't have kids, somehow, you did anyway, and you've been raising this baby for a year.

The disallows Blackcat, Angelfire, Ballstic, Smokeater and Sift. They all either never need to eat, have complete control of thier own biolical process and could not have a child without choice (down to having payed for perks for this).

That leaves TV. He's 19. Not likely to have a child, and is a speedster, so would have been running out of the desert at 200+ KPH.

He'd kill the baby, and then have a nervous breakdown and completely retire from superheroing.

Re: WWYCD?: The blatant-ening.

Badger is out of the scenario. He'd just fly him and the kid out of the desert. And no, there is no kind of vulnerability or anything to take away his flying. It has to do with alien genetics. (Father was the alien). In any case, would quickly realize the Jesus is a fake as Jesus wouldnt damn an INNOCENT soul to hell. In any case fight the evil duo, regardless of his chances. Though one wonders how he has a kid, as women seem to have no interest in him (really the guy is very unlucky in this matter) and in any case has strong religious views on fornication (he may be lapsed in some manners of religion but that is not one of them, his mother was a Christian, BTW).

Hrm . . . interesting point

The only logical explanation is that this kid isn't innocent. Shame on you! :thumbdown

Raising your own child to be evil, no wonder the adoption agencies all hate you ;)

Well, I guess that is why my characters would be bad parents.

Re: WWYCD?: The blatant-ening.

Well, poor old Great Beyond couldnt do much, but Natasha on the other hand could pown the demon with ease.

While pondering exactly what to do against the monster, a Natasha From The Future would arrive and give her a Big F'in Gun. After delivering the mortal blow to the demon, she would get out of the desert, put together a BFG capable of totaly atomizing said demon, get into her time traveling car, jump back in time to just before the encounter, and give her younger self the Demon Busting Cannon. Oh, and she drops off enough food and water for all parties concerned.

Hey, if the GM can shamlessly railroad characters like this, then I have no problem violating time streams to deliver a Deus ex machina.

***EDIT***

And, after realizing the extent of the GM railroading, Natasha would spend some time researching other dimensions and would head over to GB's universe as soon as she could to deliver another Demon Busting BFG. Problem solved there, too!

Re: WWYCD?: The blatant-ening.

What would I as the player do is more relevant, and that's simple: not attend this gamemaster's games again.

As amusing as the scenario and OP are, I'm just not into rail-roaded, gut-wrenching, no-win scenarios.

On the other hand, this seems like par for the wwycd course.
