WWYCD: The Jack-In-The-Box Scenario

One morning, as your character is his/her daily routine, he/she turns on the TV or the Radio to news of a HUGE red box with a big handcrank on one side sitting right in the middle of main street downtown! Assuming they go to investigate, the crank suddenly starts turning the instant they arrive, acompanied by the obligatory jiggling Pop-Goes-The-Weasel music. With no way of knowing what's about to pop up out of the box, WWYCD?

Re: WWYCD: The Jack-In-Th-Box Senerio

Most of my characters have a number of actions they would take BEFORE dealing with the JITB.

One: Find out if it's someone's standard MO, thus allowing them to be prepared for what MIGHT come out of the box.

Two: Get everyone OUT OF THE AREA BEFORE THE BOX OPENS. If it's a superweapon or a nuke, that allows people more time to escape.

Three: Get a hero with a springy spring onscene. This prevents the standard mallet version of this trap from working.

I'm not sure I want to be in a universe where someone is competent enough to get their hands on superweapons or nukes, and insane enough to set one up as this sort of surprise.

(yes yes, insert obligatory insanity vs. superweapon jokes here, as applied to the current US admin)

Anyway - Vitus would probably study the box for a few seconds, then hit it with a haymakered selective disintigrate. It's amazing how few superweapons work when all their metal parts have just crumbled to dust.

And Truman would simply listen to his danger-sense. If the pop-goes-the-weasel tune starts screaming in his ear, he'll run away.

Hellfire: Stays home. She is not qualified to deal with explosive devices so the best thing she can possibly do is stay out of the way and let the professionals handle it.

Wizard of Oz Incorporated: Wait until the police have evacuated the area. Then investigate using Tin Man remotely.

Riptide: Watch at a distance while a gadgeteer investigates the box. Run in and pull him out if it starts to activate.

Re: WWYCD: The Jack-In-Th-Box Senerio

Really I only have one character qualified to handle something like this...

Hardware: "The weasel is not going 'pop' ON MY WATCH, Damnit!!!"

Hardware brings out his explosives sniffer and the rest of his "bomb kit" on this one. If this is a bomb or something else equally dangerous, he's got the tools and the talent to render it harmless. Then he'll see to it whoever's respondible (a Black Harlequin- or Joker-type seems most likely in this case) is caught and gets the book thrown at them. If this turns out to be someone's idea of a prank or a publicity stunt, they're going to get a severe and very public @$$-chewing followed up by a hard smack upside the head.

Soulbarb: (Street Level) Definitely do preliminary investigation via her Blackberry PDA before even going near the thing. There's way too many pairs of eyes and cameras turned on it for her to show up as Soulbarb. While trying to figure out what it is and who set it up by running a quick search through the usual 'net rumor mill, and determining if this fits any known villain MOs, she will also be sure to keep an eye on the news for developments and to see if any of the city's other heroes are likely to arrive to deal with it.

Once the initial research is done, she would probably go in her secret ID and poke around with her Soulsight for magic and/or for someone who looks suspiciously evil/gloating/etc. If it still triggered despite her being in secret ID, it would depend on what happened, but if the crowd starts running away she'll run with them (helping those who need help on the way) until she can find someplace to change forms. After that, it depends on the time of day/night and how much cover she can find to operate out of; since her heroic ID is likely to be even more frightening to bystanders than whatever comes out of the Jack-in-the-Box, Soulbarb really doesn't like publicity.

Sylph: Wrap the box in a very large entangle barrier (instant forest) to make sure it can't open? Otherwise, she's got nothin.' ;)

Marksman, primarily a investigating skulker with archery based gadgets

Preliminary: As his alter ego he would all the PD and find out what is already being done, he would also recomend that they rope of the area and put some uniforms in place to keep people atleast 300' away (He is a member of the local PD, originaly part of the meta human response team later local liason fot his team, works well as his hero ID was not the in front of the camera type)

Then He woudl carefuly start examining it, sending all the pics to his tech guy to see what he could come up with

Finaly he would approach with a bomb arrrow ready to go

Special Agent Trent would enlist the aid of local law enforcement to evacuate and cordon off a large area around the device. Whether at the city, state, or federal level, there are personnel better trained than him to handle this sort of thing.

If, despite all precautions, it starts to play, he'd try to hold the lid down, either by placing something heavy on it, or just using his 55 STR telekinesis.

Olorin would t-port it somewhere safe (Antartica would be a candidate). and go to watch it (from a distance).

Volt would clear the area and wrap it in a force wall - which always knock him out. Someone else would have to deal with it or wait till he recovers.

Black Tiger would go "Where's Olorin?", try to clear the area and stay away from it. He's a martial artist with no disarming capabiltites - he does have deduction, thus may be able to find out who did it if not obvious.

Re: WWYCD: The Jack-In-Th-Box Senerio

Icestar would have to be convinced that it's a potential threat in the first place....if asked, she would bury the whole thing in a mountain of ice to keep everyone happy, but she would also consider it kind of paranoid of everyone to be concerned about it at all when it's obviously just some stupid prank...

Okay, if the box pops open, the "Jack" springs up and...

roll a d6 and check below:

1)...throws a giant pie.

2)...makes an obsene gesture/moons the crowd.

3)...does a 20d6 Fear-Based Presence Attack on the crowd.

4)...explodes to the tune of 8d6 K EX

5)...fires randomly into the crowd with a machine gun.

6)...holds up an ad banner and then starts in on some pre-recorded sales pitch.

Re: WWYCD: The Jack-In-Th-Box Senerio

Well, the ones with N-Ray vision or Danger Sense wouldn't spoil the surprise for the onlookers, of course.. Depending one which ones, they might consider death a spoil, not a surprise.

So many ways of keeping a lid from popping open, from duct tape to parking a cement truck on top of it, but for my gloryhounds, they'd want to show off after the box pops open, to a) demonstrate how incredibly powerful, clever and prepared they are, and B) yank the fun away from the prankster at the last split second. Because they're meanies.

Powerstar would, the instant the JITB's handle started cranking and

the music started playing, use his heat vision (or something similar) to

weld the lid closed before flying it to someplace far from any populated

areas.

This assumes, of course, that the "surprise" is non-nuclear in nature. In the

event that a nuclear device was detected inside the JITB, he'd fly it out-

side the atmosphere to get it as far away from the planet as he could

before detonation.
