The Arc
Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine Awhile back I worked on a character named Herne the Hunter, who was mentioned in Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". I really liked the background I wrote, but never finished him. Anways here's a drawing of Herne the Hunter. The woman’s step brought her along the path in the forest. The sounds of the birds that were singing in the trees fell silent as she grew closer to the humongous oak tree. Even the rain that was falling all over Windsor Forest seemed to grow muted as she drew nigh. Reality Flickers . . . The queenly fairy Titania glided along the path toward the towering oak that seemed to brood in the distance. With every step flowers bloomed behind her. Her escort of brownie, sprites, pixies, and various other fairies hopped, fluttered, and scampered behind her. Flicker . . . The matronly woman eventually came to stand before the spread oak. Its branches were heavy with moss, and they seemed to droop down from all the weight. She paused a moment to adjust her shawl before looking up into the branches. Flicker . . . Titania, Queen of the Fairies stood before the Tree of Punishment, and was dwarfed by the size of it. Hanging from the many branches were those fairies being punished either by her or her consort Oberon. Being immortal the fairies could not die, but writhed in agony at the end of hangman’s noose. On a branch hangs Robin Goodfellow, condemned for his trick upon the queen, and along with him are several others, but he is not the one that Titania seeks. Flicker . . . The woman staring up into the tree breaks out in a sonnet. “Sometime a keeper in Windsor Forest, Doth all the winter-time, at still midnight, Walk round about an oak with great ragg’d horns; And there he blasts the tree, and takes the cattle, And makes milch-kine yield blood, and shakes a chain In a most hideous and dreadful manner. You have heard of such a spirit, and well you know The superstitious idle-headed eld Receiv’d, and deliver to our age, This tale of Herne the Hunter for a truth.” Flicker . . . As Titania finished speaking the oak tree rocked and turned as it seemed to be looking for something or someone. The condemned fairies screamed in pain as the nooses around their necks tightened from the movements of the oak and eventually one of the condemned finds himself hanging just a few feet above the queen. His eyes bulge and his tongue protrudes from his mouth. Titania smiles. Flicker . . . Smiling the woman reaches into the oak, even though it’s obvious that there is nothing there. She speaks, “Oh, Cernunnos, dear Cernunnos. What has become of the mighty Horned One? Fool that you are, and arrogant to boot. Challenge Oberon to a hunt of the Unicorn. Know you that only a maiden virginal may tame that wild beast. And this is your reward for failure to hang from the Tree of Punishment for all eternity. A fitting punishment, in my eyes I think.” Flicker . . . Titania touches the leg of Cernunnos, and the hangman’s noose let him free, and the fairy falls to the ground in a mighty heap. He slowly stands rubbing his neck where the noose rubbed it raw. “Don’t call me that name,” he says glaring at the Fairy Queen. “Those days are long gone and best forgotten. The Wild Hunt is no more, and the Celts are but a memory. As should be the Faerie.” Gruffly the fairy turned his back on Titania. Flicker . . . At one time there was just the woman standing before the oak tree, but in the blink of an eye, a strange man stood in front of her with his back to her. “It is not wise to spurn the generosity of the Fairy Queen,” she says, “I did not have to free you from the Tree of Punishment foolish Cernunnos. You should be more grateful than this.” The man spun back around to face the woman, his antlered head shaking with rage. His fists clenched at his side. “I asked you not to call me that,” the man bellowed and spittle flew from his mouth. Nearby a few crows took fright and flew away. The woman who was Titania was not impressed. Her consort, Prince Oberon, had raged at her more than this upstart. “So,” asked Titania nervously, “Cern...um... what shall you be known by?” “As your sonnet proclaims,” said the altered man, “call me Herne, Herne the Hunter.” Flicker... Titania grabbed Hernes arm and was in the process of dragging him away when out the forest steps her consort Oberon along with his entourage. Oberon took one look at Herne and rage filled his heart. “Harlot,” shouted Oberon, “are your desires so unquenchable that you must seek out this Unseelie Fairy?” “Well,” replied Titania, “if you weren’t always out cavorting with this or that Fairy, you won’t have anything to worry about. And by what right to have to judge me!” The royal fairies then proceed to get into a shouting match on whom was the more faithless, Herne was all but forgotten. He tried to interrupt just once and almost paid for it with his life. “Truly this isn’t worth it,” thought Herne, “I’m now free of this accursed tree. Maybe, I should explore the world outside of Faerie.” Turning the faerie walked away. He wasn’t even noticed by the Fairy Queen and her Consort. Flicker . . . The rains came down heavily that day in Windsor Forest. A solitary man walked away from a humongous oak tree, and he never looked back. Oddly enough it looked like he had antlers growing from his head.

The Arc
Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine Here's a character I wrote for a Golden Age PBEM. Unfortunately the last event I wrote about in his background took place after the date when the campaign was set, so no dice. Anway, here is... Thane And just for those interested. Here is Thanes' background... The battle was over, Harold was dead, shot in the head with a Norman arrow. The Anglo-Saxon army was broken. And Owen of Wessex was running for his life. Once Owen was a thane in the king's courts, but now he was a hunted man. Bloody, armor in ruins, a cloak in tatters, and with no weapons left Owen fled from a party of Norman knights hot for his Saxon blood. Owen knew that it would be easy for the Normans to find him. His only refuge was that night had fallen, but the fresh snow on the ground clearly pointed out his tracks. Owen wished that he had died alongside his king like all of his fellow thanes. The night progressed and Owen was sure that the Normans were right behind him. Lost in the dark Owen struggled up a hill in east Sussex. Then he tripped, stumbling into a fairy ring. The fall caused Owen to lose consciousness for a minute. As Owen was struggling back to his feet, he started hearing music from all around. This was quickly followed by lights floating in the dark. Before his very eyes the ground in front of him tore asunder. Riding out of the hole in the ground was a band of fairies on spectral horses. The laughing and singing fairies circled around Owen almost close enough for him to touch them. In awe at the beauty of the fairies, Owen fell to his knees his breathe knocked out of him. Then the Fairy Queen riding a golden chariot came flying out of the hole coming to rest right in front of Owen. Owen bowed his head in homage to the Fairy Queen's beauty. He raised his bloody arm in supplication. "Oh most beautiful lady of the fair folk I do beseech you. My king, Harold, lies died in yon Hastings. William the Bastard has slain him. And I, poor wretch that I am, flee with Normans at my back. Soon Owen of Wessex will be no more." said Owen. Finished talking, Owen dropped his arm back down to his side in defeat. "Oh valient, Owen of Wessex, do not fear for your life from me or my host, though they might frighten you mightily. Nor fear the Normans who seek you and your blood. For they shan't find you. We shall succor you on condition of an oath. Swear that your sword arm will be mine for all time, and you'll need not fear an enemy again." said the Fairy Queen. Owen barely got the words "I do swear" out of his mouth before he along with the Fairy Queen and her host flew down into the hole. Owen wasn't seen in England again for another 872 years. No one really remembers Owen of Wessex. Owen was taken to the Fairy Realm. While the fairies treated Owen as one of their own, the one thing he was not allowed to do was return to England. And like the fairies he didn't age. For a hundred years he despaired, but the Fairy Queen told him to cease his prattlings. For another hundred years Owen feasted with the fairies. Over the centuries Owen did everything, but everything soon became to be boring. In a pique of rage, Owen demanded to be allowed to return to England. The Fairy Queen reminded him of his oath. However, as a compromise the queen allowed him to use her scrying pool. With the pool Owen was finally able to view events that were taking place in England. He sat and watched the War of the Roses, the Hundred Years War, and the raise of the British Empire. He saw it all, but couldn't contribute to his country. He was exiled. In desperation, Owen thought up a plan. The Fairy Queen was a powerful sorceress with the magic of the ages at her finger tips. Owen made a pact with her that if she taught him sorcery then they would have a duel, and if he won she would free him, and if he lost he'd be her toy for the ages. Thinking that it would be great fun the Fairy Queen agreed to the wager. Centuries past in a heart beat in the Fairy Realm. Owen studied magic under the Fairy Queen night and day, with only few rests for entertainment. Eventually Owen felt confident in his powers and said it was time for their duel. Owen and the Fairy Queen faced off with one another. However, before the contest could actually be started one of queen's fairies interrupted saying that something strange was going on at the scrying pool. Rushing to the pool both looked down into the pool. Neither the Fairy Queen nor Owen understood what was going on. Looking in the scrying pool, the two saw long metal spears falling from the sky and when they struck the earth they exploded in a ball of fire. Death rained from the sky. The year was 1940 and the Blitz had came to England. The fairy told his queen that he had been practicing a foresight spell, and that this was the future. The Fairy Queen was taken aback from the events that was unfolding before her. Things had greatly changed over the centuries for the fairies. No longer were they able to leave the Fairy Realm. So the Fairy Queen sent Owen as her representive to England to help possibly prevent the bombing that was going to harm the Fairy Realm. The Fairy Queen gave Owen several magical gifts to aid him in his quest, a magical suit of armor, a pair of magical gauntlets, and a magical cloak. With his new magical weapons and his knowledge of magic, Owen was finally released from the Fairy Realm. Out of the hill in Sussex, Owen emerged. Striding down the hill a new Thane had came to save England, the Fairy Realm, and possibly the world. A mighty smile crossed Owen's face as he strode to the defense of England. It was two years before the Blitz; 1938.
The Arc
Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine I had thought I had finished the background for this character, but funny I hadn't. Anyway, this character was inspired by the movie "Soldier", and possibly "Starship Troopers." Target is a super-soldier from an alternate reality, where the Nazi's won the war. He has the mental abilites to see things around him without using his eyes, and to scan the area around him for other minds. Hence the name Target. He's assisted by his faithful genetically modified doberman Blitz. Target Here's the partial background for Target. August 16th 1995 Outside of Billings, Montana TS-X39 quietly crept up on the camp of the Jewish Cabalists. Along with him came his faithful Doberman's Donner and Blitz. TS-X39 had targeted this group some days earlier. Soon it would be time to attack these enemies of the New Reich. When TS-X39 was in position he opened his mind and saw all. Clustered around a small campfire, not far from where TS-X39 was hidden, were a group of six gaunt men. TS-X39 knew them intimately even though they had never met. Their leader was a Jew by the name of Isaac Lieberman. Lieberman was really the target of the hunt. The other men were merely in the way; they too would be eliminated. TS-X39 could easily hear what the men were saying, even though it was in Yiddish. The men were recounting how things had become the way they were now. Sitting there in the darkness TS-X39 was carried back as well. May 8th 1945 Things seemed to be their bleakest in Nazi Germany. Hitler was dead by his own hand, and the German army was in disarray. However, a true Aryan came to the fore; a German rocket scientist named Heinrich von Herz. It was von Herz who completed the last five atomic V-3 rockets. In desperation von Herz launched the rockets at the encroaching Allies. One of the rockets exploded on the pad, while the others flew off to their destinations. Soon Paris, London, and Moscow were smoldering ruins. This was the turning point in the war. The heart was torn out of the Allied forces. Soon Nazi Germany was reborn. Conquest of Europe only took six months after that. Only the United States stood in the way of total domination. And the United States was in great confusion over the defeat of Europe. June 13th 1953 With improvements in the V-3 Rockets, soon the major cities of the United States were now ruins, New York City, Atlanta, Boston, Washington DC to name a few. It wasn't too longer after that the United States capitulated to Nazi Germany. Now it was Nazi Germany who ruled the world. April 5 1985 Improvements in genetics had made great bounds, from the study of the Jews before their destruction at the concentration camps. Now Nazi Germany could manipulate the genetic code with ease. The future looked bright for Nazi Germany. July 31 1987 The Mengala Research Center, Nuremberg Germany The bio-pod cracked open with a hiss, some embryonic fluid spilled on the floor and the infant was 'born'. A quick examine shown that the infant was healthy. Another success at the research center. Soon the infant was marked with his identification number: TS-X39. As the infant lay in his crib his training began. Eventually TS-X39 was known by his other call sign; Ziel or Target. December 28th 1989 The Mengala Research Center, Nuremberg Germany The accelerated growth hormone worked wonders on TS-X39. Even though he had only been alive for about two years, he had the appearance of a twenty year old man. The hypno-training that was used at the research center also was effective. Further training was carried out on Target. It was discovered that Target could bond with animals and he was trained alongside two genetically modified Doberman Pinchers code-named Donner and Blitz. Present The untermenschen finally finished their musings. TS-X39 was back on alert; chiding himself for getting lost in memories. As TS-X39 watched Isaac Lieberman stood up and started chanting something that sounded like Yiddish, but wasn't. Soon the other men joined in. Eventually they all formed a circle facing Isaac. Before TS-X39's eyes a light suddenly appeared next to Isaac. The chanting stopped. Isaac turned to face the other men. "Too long have we suffered in this world. The Germans now rule this world, and the Jews are practically no more due to their efforts at genocide. It is with a sad heart that we must go, but go we must. Even now I feel that the German hounds are on us," said Isaac as he once again turned to face the light. TS-X39 knew that the time for attack was now. With a mental command Blitz and Donner struck. Out of the dark the two dogs struck, with TS-X39 quickly on their heels. Donner had one Jew down, and TS-X39 barrelled into Isaac his stun stick flailing. Blitz was only a second behind him. Isaac along with his attackers fell into the light. And all the world exploded.
