Old Man
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/03/sxsw-predators/ Upcoming new Predator movie. Really minor spoilers, I guess, though it gives away less than the trailers will.

Lord Liaden
Re: Predators vs. You I quite enjoyed AVP: Requiem. I thought the plot and characters were decent, the fights pretty well staged and dramatic, and some of the deaths (and non-deaths) were unexpected. In some ways it was an homage to the first film in the series, recreating a few classic moments, as well as to the better survival-horror genre films. This new one does look interesting, though -- the first real expansion of the Predators' culture and society in twenty years.

Curufea
Re: Predators vs. You So the question is' date=' does this make the [i']AvP [/i]movies canon? How can they not be? They're movies. If you are taking movies as canon, why do you take some movies as not canon? My question is - ruthless killers versus ruthless killers - what the hell is an audience member meant to empathise with? What is their "in"?

Nolgroth
Re: Predators vs. You 1. Predators vs. Me? Do I get the Iron Man armor and training on how to use? Me if I do, predators if not. 2. AvP canon? The first one sort of violated canon in every meaningful way. "Only in the hottest years," was what the lady in Predator said. In Predator 2, LA was going through a massive heat wave. AvP? Antarctica. Yeaahhhh. To be fair, the second one set up a reason why Weyland Yutani would be interested in the xenomorphs in some distant future. Not buying it too much, but at least the attempt was there. 3. Ruthless vs ruthless. Didn't they make a torture porn a few years back about some abusive people getting chopped up by some psychopaths in a hotel? Didn't really find a buy in to that premise then either. This one at least has Laurence Fishburne in it. 4. Impression on the new movie are what I would expect. Wait for DVD. See it at my leisure. Nothing exciting to write home about. Predators kill more people until one of them rises up and wreaks havoc. A good formula for that type of movie, but nothing I want to endure the movie crowds over. Of course, some days I find myself honestly thinking the term whipper snapper in reference to younger folk. I take that as a sign that I am not the market demographic. If you are taking movies as canon, why do you take some movies as not canon? My question is - ruthless killers versus ruthless killers - what the hell is an audience member meant to empathise with? What is their "in"? Well, technically, Predators just book off a week from the Slurm factory to go shoot some poo-throwing hairless monkeys. It's not their fault that for some reason that's illegal here. (No, seriously, you can get into trouble for even shooting one, even if it's been standing by the time clock for five minutes waiting to go home.) I'm sure they love their wives and children, and tolerate their mothers-in-law. Aliens are just icky. Go Predators!
RexMundi
Re: Predators vs. You I've got high hopes for the Predators movie really. From the Behind the scenes Chat with the director and the expanded clips, I get the feeling they want to return to the roots of the movie (Only in the Hottest etc), and Ignore the ......hmmm.....Fluffed up versions in the AvP stuff.......Casting is, interesting, but from the expanded clips it looks like they are going back to what worked. As for Predators vs Me. Hmmm..........I'd probably be worth a trophy, but only as much as spear hunting a wild boar would be. Sit there make it mad, let it impale itself for you in it's piggy fury brilliance. In the first movie, I would have rated somewhere around Ventura's character...heh....*Offers the hippies some chewing tobacco.....* ~Rex
Lord Liaden
Re: Predators vs. You So the question is' date=' does this make the [i']AvP [/i]movies canon? Rodriguez originally wrote Predators before any of the Alien vs. Predator films' date=' so it doesn’t really reference those story lines.[/quote'] It sounds as though whether the AVP films are "canon" or not is neither settled by nor relevant to this film, which is probably just as well. The description of Predators makes it seem to be rooted in events from the first two films in the series.
DusterBoy
Re: Predators vs. You At least the second film had Danny Glover (apparently not then too old for this s**t) and Gary Busey. I really didn't like the first AvP movie, feeling that the SFX were actually inferior to those in the first "Predator" movie and that it was just an Earthbound version of the first AvP graphic novel. Plus, when the aliens got sliced open, they had no internal organs - no brain, no gut, no respiratory system - nothing.
Lord Liaden
Re: Predators vs. You My question is - ruthless killers versus ruthless killers - what the hell is an audience member meant to empathise with? What is their "in"? We're meant to empathise with the humans caught in the middle, trying not to become collateral damage. While the first Alien vs. Predator gave us superficial characters who were bumped off far too quickly, IMO Requiem did a pretty good job of making its human protagonists sympathetic before the body count started piling up. That said, between the two breeds of "ruthless killers" it's slightly easier to emphathize with the Predators. Previous films portray them as having their own code of honor, respecting courage and skill in their "prey," and sometimes displaying great bravery. In Requiem one of them even showed a moment of remorse for a fallen comrade. The xenomorph aliens are little more than murder machines, without personalities to speak of. (Mind you, the difference is comparable to that between a grizzly bear and a great white shark. Neither one would be my first choice for a dinner companion.) EDIT: as to the title topic of the thread, I would expect to crumple into a little sobbing heap at my first sight of either of these things, before being implanted or de-boned, as the case may be. RexMundi
Re: Predators vs. You Well TRUE, they DID skimp on the movie rating. If they used real Innards, they might have gotten a good movie out of it and all the little tweeners would have had nothing to watch that day, because we all know how good a movie theater is at carding kids these decades. ~Rex.....demands grown up movies for grown ups.....And Ice Water to drop from the ceiling on Unruly Children, Inattentive Parents with Unruly Children, people that won't shut up, and of course, the people that have to go to the bathroom every 3 minutes but insist on sitting in the middle of the row. Folks with Cell Phones, .......well I just take those and sell them back later.
