You are a spacer on a tramp freighter. an officer. There is no standard crew, robots do the grunt work.

As an officer and co-owner, you and five other people are getting ready for a voyage that could be a year or more in length. One swing will be 5 months between planets.

 

This is a long time to spend among friends. You cabin is relatively spacious for a ship, its about the size of a one bedroom apartment.

There are ship board amusements. WOW is still being played on the Faster than Light galactic net (still strong after 500 years).

 

So, Would you buy a..um...personal companion bot? Be greeted in your cabin with a smile and a welcome. Programed to keep the place clean, pick up you socks with complaint, massage therapy, react like your burps and farts are cute...

 

Someone you can put in a closet when you are done with them. Someone who thinks getting you another beer is more important than whatever they are doing at the moment. Someone who is programed for the Karma Sutra...yeah!

 

A companion bot. Yeah. Thats what we'll call them.

Its a long, hard lonely haul out there between the stars...but someone's got to do it.

 

So what would your character do? Would you purchase a companion bot?

You can make them look any way you want too. Models start at a mere 2000 credits.

Fun aside:

Depending on how much I have to do all day and if I didn't have the time to keep my own cabin clear, I would perhaps go for a simple "cleaner"-bot or other robot that is more functional/robotic (and less human replicate).

 

If I should, for wathever reason, wind up with a companion bot anyway:

I'll guess I would start teaching her to do her own decisions, grow beyond her programming. The usuall "get human-like free will" thing.

If she archieves that level and there should be some connection, I'll just go on like with every other women.

The opposite of what Christopher said: I'd only get one if I could be certain the machine had no chance of achieving any form of actual sentience/sapience. If that happens, it'll start getting ideas about who's in charge, deciding who's going to cook, what I'm going to wear, how I spend my spare time, making plans for what I'm doing with my career after the voyage is over (without consulting me!), and if I wanted to deal with all that rubbish I'd bring along a real woman, thanks very much.

 

But if I can be reasonably sure the 'bot won't get out of control, then I'll take two. no, make that three!

Well sir, we do have this one unit we haven't been able to place. Keeps complaining, and they're not supposed to do that. Placed with several men so far and always claims to not like them. Maybe we can let you try this one out on a trial basis, you can pay for it at the end of the voyage if you wish and give it back otherwise... if it doesn't work out this time we may just have to scrap this one.

Also, the entire Idea was just for the unlikely chance I get one anyway (standart issue for crew; Other crewmember dies and she needs some place to stay).

Like I said when I can do the household chores on my own, I do them myself. And if not I use a normal "cleaner bot" with no...other functionality and no chance of emotional attraction.

What if you are maried/in a realtionship at that time, what would you do then?

What if there is a female crew member you have interst in, would you still take one (or more) even if it could ruin every chance with her?

Is there a way for take over the body remotely? We do have this super-intenet and when your girl/women is at home and has suiteable interface... (not my thing either, but for others that might be interesting).

About the questions:

About remote controll:

Isn't there some way to fuse with summons? Wouldn't place it in the companion in the first place. It's more like relaying all sensory/motoric I/O to a module somewhere at home. Perhaps a sort of Clairsentience or Mind Control with sensory feedback/concentration (like for the Astral Form Example on 6E1 204 or a ghost posession power), target must be willing and a Bulky Focus (the interface hardware).

I don't know about you, but being interested in a woman while being perfectly aware that the "interest" is going absolutely nowhere is pretty much an everyday experience for me. I've long since learned to ignore such potential exercises in futility as distractions from more productive pursuits such as finding ways to relate to such women, no matter how "interesting," as people, as co-workers, as gamers, or in whatever other roles and contexts I find them, rather than as sex objects.

This goes double for co-workers by the way, and probably triple for shipmates.

 

In other words, as long as my companion stays in my cabin and my shipmate's amusingly pointless disgust stays in hers, there's no reason we can't have a relationship of mutual respect in the bridge or engine room, shared relaxation in the rec room, and playful competition in the gym. Just like with any other two crewmembers.

 

In fact, a major benefit of the availabillity of such private companions is the facilitation of smooth and uncomplicated working relationships among a mixed crew. If the captain has one in her quarters, I would worry less that she'd get lonely on a long voyage and put one of the rest of us in an awkward position vis a vis "fraternization."

 

Now if this is a "What Would Your Character Do" question, let me think on it.

I can't speak to Pizza Man's products but you'll notice nothing in my write up implies they are nonbiological. Can't get much more lifelike than being alive!

 

From the AAF709 75/75 Owner's Manual:

 

Your fembot has certain requirements that must be met to prevent cessation of function and voiding of the warranty.

 

Constant exposure to an Earthlike oxygenated atmosphere. Do not store your fembot in enclosed space without ventilation. Do not block air intake for periods greater than 5 minutes. Your fembot is capable of operating in water but should not remain completely submerged longer than 5 minutes, less if the fembot is being very active. DO NOT EXPOSE TO HARD VACUUM.

 

Sustenance: A well balanced diet is optimal for long term high performance. Neglecting to feed your fembot for three days in a row will void the warranty, as will failure to provide a constant, ready supply of potable water. A fembot will also need facilities for the disposal of organic waste products.

 

Attention and Guidance: Once a fembot imprints on an owner, only an authorized service facility can reverse the imprinting. Your imprinted fembot exists to serve you. This need may be met simply; your fembot will readily spend all day every day standing around looking pretty, as long as, once a day, you pause to admire or give some verbal or nonverbal assurance that you do in fact find your fembot to be pretty. Long periods without contact or instructions are problematic. If your fembot cannot perceive that it is serving a useful (defined as serving or pleasing you in some way) function, the unit will cease to function at all, eventually shut down, and begin to deteriorate.

Issue: My fembot does not seem lifelike

 

Procedures:

 

If fembot is inert but respiration is evident, this is probably sleep mode. Loud noise, bright light, or strong tactile contact such as light shaking, should stimulate the fembot into normal operating mode.

 

If respiration and pulse is not evident or extremely faint ( i.e. detectable only with medical instruments) then your fembot is possibly dormant. Your fembot has a dormancy mode that can be triggered in an emergency. This mode is not foolproof and recovery from it may not be possible but should be attempted. Repeat the fembot's serial number loudly, slowly, and clearly. If no response, repeat several times. This is the default signal to come out of dormancy. (This setting can be changed if desired. See Changing the Default Settings.) Once no longer dormant and interacting, the fembot can assist with diagnosis.

Something that looks human, that is servile is still a bit squikky to me. I don't really have that need to dominate. Also imprinting seems to be a bit problematic, esp if one is already in a relationship or later one develops (between me and another human). Also, if I have this biological lobotomized clone with me. It feels like I might be better to use the lifesupport for a real person (A thinking person who is more than a sex toy). Having something that imprints just seems like a ton of responsibility. I guess they could reset the imprint at the central office, but what if they couldn't. Could you abandon something that "loves" you completly, but your needs have outgrown the need for a lifesized sex toy?

 

Also for what that sex bot costs, I can buy a ton of Porn and more portable toys that probably wouldn't get me in trouble with the SO...
