Uh Oh. Whats the story here?

Re: Uh Oh. Whats the story here?

Time for bit of creative thought. What have the heroes stumbled into?

Where is this? and whats the story?

thepumpkinkingbyradojav.jpg

What: By all appearances, a pagan ceremony/ritual being conducted by children.

Where: In all likelihood, one of those really out-of-the-way New England commun-

ities of the sort that writers such as Lovecraft and King use(d) in their stories -- the

kind of communities with a long (but generally unknown to the public at large) hist-

ory of weird and eldritch happenings.

The Story: As is so often the case with such happenings, whatever the story may

be, it's something that bodes ill for any unwary traveller unfortunate enough to

come across it in his or her travels (remember the Children of the Corn movies?).

Re: Uh Oh. Whats the story here?

If this is another "create your own story" idea, then I may have something.

If you all can recall the story of the Pied Piper. The piper didn't gain his powers from his own doing but rather through a compact with a devilish fiend of the autumn harvest. Once every harvest moon, the piper must ready a spot out in the woods lest he forever be casted as but another pumpkin in the fiend's devilish feature. As such, he will use the talents given to him to lure a collection of children out into the woods where they will dance and sing praise to the fiend as he slowly incorporates them into the patch.

If you take note of the guy in the foreground - That is the intrepid Hero who seeks to understand and thwart this atrocious act before it is too late.

Re: Uh Oh. Whats the story here?

Bonfires dot the rolling hills

Figures dance around and around

To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness

Moving to the pagan sound.

Somewhere in a hidden memory

Images float before my eyes

Of fragrant nights of straw and of bonfires

And dancing till the next sunrise.

I can see lights in the distance

Trembling in the dark cloak of night

Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing

A waltz on All Souls Night.

Figures of cornstalks bend in the shadows

Held up tall as the flames leap high

The green knight holds the holly bush

To mark where the old year passes by.

I can see the lights in the distance

Trembling in the dark cloak of night

Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing

A waltz on All Souls Night.

Bonfires dot the rolling hillsides

Figures dance around and around

To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness

And moving to the pagan sound.

Standing on the bridge that crosses

The river that goes out to the sea

The wind is full of a thousand voices

They pass by the bridge and me.

I can see the lights in the distance

Trembling in the dark cloak of night

Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing

A waltz on All Souls Night.

The adventurers have arrived just in time to see the children defeat the evil Pumpkin King. They have him surrounded and confined by holding hands and chanting the timeless charms as he is destroyed by fire.

The adventurers should stick around. There will be pie.

Re: Uh Oh. Whats the story here?

Ah, so many Great Pumpkin suggestions here (though I wonder why he'd be after Charlie Brown and not Linus Van Pelt).

Clearly there's a Samhain ritual going on here, and it's quite successful. That's the angle I'd give it for a story, with a Lovecraft flavor and perhaps a nod to the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Actually, the Great Pumpkin would probably be after neither Linus nor Charlie...

"I come bearing gifts for all the sincere children here gathered! Schroeder - you will be able to play your piano in peace! Charlie Brown - never again will you kick in vain at a football snatched away at the last moment! And my prophet Linus will no longer be persecuted in his own home! I WILL BRING YOU THE HEAD OF LUCY VAN PELT!"

Re: Uh Oh. Whats the story here?

Nothing to see here. It's a bunch of children having a delightful Halloween party! Come join the fun -- there's candy' date=' bobbin' apples, and free Treasury bonds! :D[/quote']

And now we can have a vigorous exchange of views on QE3!

You guys are right. This is a great Horror Hero hook.

I like pumpkin pie but sweet potato pie rules!

Now, I am just the opposite.

And my wife's pumpkin gingerbread beats both of them! So much ginger it is hot, lots of Sour Cream added so it is almost like a pudding cake!
