Can you post character builds on these forums?

Recommended Posts

Looking around, and looking over the rules, I am guessing that you cannot post threads of character conversions and the like on the forum? I am just recently getting into HERO and I plan to do what I do on the Roll Call forum at Atomic Think Tank, or what I did with Marvel Heroic Roleplaying here, at Myth-Weavers. I will have to make a new forum over at Myth-Weavers if we can't post threads here, but I thought I'd ask, anyway.

Also, hi, people! :)

Re: Can you post character builds on this forums?

A lot of people post thier characters.

A lot of them are homages or downright wirteups of comic/cartoon characters.

Conversions between system are tricky because you need to filter out the meaning/position of a rule to properly translate powers affecting that rule. But generally, you can ask question about how to translate characters from one game system into Hero.

Edit:

If you want to make a conversion of characters from only one genre (most D&D/D20 characters tend to belong into Fantasy) it's usually better of in the appropirate genre forum. Otherwise please note the genre.

You generally can't get any personal threads stickied, but people still do themed threads all the time. Every timeyou update it it will pop back to the top of the list and anyone who posts to it will be subscribed to it so it isn't hard to keep track of your favorite on-going thread, even if it is updated infrequently.

Is there a time limit on editing posts? If not' date=' great, that allows for index posts to be maintained, which really makes the whole thing better.[/quote']

Not as far as I know. However, nobody will be notified about your Update.

The base rule about updates:

When there isn't an "Edited at" shown at the post, nodbody had even read your post before you updated it.

If there is one shown, then at least a few people will never read your edit...

The usual way to notify about updates is to post a message at the end.

Unless I could get a build thread stickied' date=' though, it might be better to set it up at Myth-Weavers. I don't plan to do much in the way of converting between systems, but more just adapting characters from various media as true to form as possible.[/quote']

I recommend using the Blog feature on this site for posting updates to ideas you want "stickied"

Nope posting character is verboten! Only the lowest born type of villainous scum would do such a thing!

So, can't wait to see what you have. :)

Re: Can you post character builds on these forums?

Time to do a test and see if the formatting holds. Somehow, I doubt it will, which means I will need to come up with a forum-friendly format scheme. Can anyone help me with that? Or should I just do this stuff as attachments?

Here, as a simple sample character, is Sheva Alomar from Resident Evil 5. I figured that'd be a game run somewhere between Heroic and Superheroic; thus, her equipment and stuff hasn't been chosen yet. I also haven't added in a picture or fluff, this is just to figure out the format.

Re: Can you post character builds on these forums?

There are basically 3 good options for posting characters built using HeroDesigner (which it looks like you already have).

1. Use the default built in PDF export feature and attach to a post.

2. Use one of the many text exports and copy/paste into a post (some extra formatting is usually necessary).

3. Use one of the html exports by saving them to herocentral and then copying the link into your forum post (see details on how to do this here).

From a time perspective:

#1 is the quickest and #3 the slowest.

#2 is a compromise between both (no adobe required for the viewer but a little more work upfront).

#3 is the only satisfying way to post different templates (vehicles, bases, etc..).

Lets see

Blip

Ghost Cat

Shield Maiden

Elizabeth Perrot

these are 4 of my characters that I have posted to this forum

even got rep from a Mod for a build

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Yes you can

Just don't post somebody's copyrighted stuff

Like Wolverine from the Marvel game and the like

Those look like they'd be good, and I really wish I did have Hero Designer. I'm dirt poor, though, and don't have even $25 for it, I'm afraid. I had to trade to get HERO. I did this up in an Open Office document and just copied and pasted.

That's why I asked initially, 'cause I plan on statting up lots of characters from various video games, mostly, with a few movie and book adaptations here and there.

In that case, what I'd suggest is setting up a template in CALC with the BBCode for tables (taking advantage of the cell structure of CALC) and then insert your data in that template, then copy and paste the whole thing into your posts. It works pretty well.

I'm not sure how I would do that. I figure I can work CALC well enough' date=' though I don't have much experience with it, but I can learn it. How do you mean using the BBCode for the tables, though, exactly?[/quote']

Here's a link to a sample spreadsheet. The table code is bracketed (and follows the format of basic html) and you can see where I entered data. It's fairly easy to extrapolate from there. When you've filled out the areas I've indicated you can just copy and past that into the forum and you get a tabled layout.
