Re: A Thread for Random Musings

And thus the next chapter of my life doth begin. I'm here in North Carolina and my hotel has internet. I have just over a week to find a permanent place to live and work officially begins October 2nd. The hotel, extended stay place, is actually quite nice, and it's a steal at under $200 a week. Most of my fears have abated and I'm ready to things going. I think I'm going to like it here; On the drive in I saw a store called The Gamer's Guild.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

(btw, this has nothing to do with political views; I think Clinton would have responded to the challenge of 9/11 better than Bush longer-term, actually - while I think Clinton also would have gone into Iraq, though, and be facing similar challenges)

I so detest the very sight of Bill Clinton, he's on some CNN program, I can't even sit and watch it at all. Hillary suffers primarily by association, I admit, though she's annoying on her own (just not nearly so much as BIll and can be tolerable a good portion of the time). So incredibly phony and plastic, I never understood the appeal (not to suggest it isn't there, objectively speaking), I think I might even vote republican if it comes down to dealing with a (Rodham-)Clinton vs. even the worst republican candidates. But I doubt it will come to that. Though a Clinton-Giuliani match-up (however unlikely) would be a very interesting general election fight. I really have found Bush, at his worst, a relief from 8 unremitting years of Clinton. At least Bush generally is (unintentionally) funny (I loved Stewart's rip on Bush's 5-year anniversay of 9/11 speech).

Somehow, (the other) Clinton will win just to drive me insane and away from news programs for another 8 years.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I just don't get why some anti-Jewish people try to deny the existence of the holocaust. I mean, they already espouse the elimination of the Jews, so it's not like they get any moral edge out of it. It's not as if the Jews' lying about the holocaust justifies someone turning around and exterminating them. It's not as if their justification of genocide is based on that, it's based on other reasons (however irrational they may be). And it's a bizarre statement which has no basis in fact at all. And the people who deny it are the same who admire the notion and admire Hitler's actions otherwise in regard to the Jewish people (specifically, not necessarily otherwise) anyway. Of course, it's a way to undermine the primary reason (in their view, but this part I would agree with, Israel is a nation whose founding is uniquely tied to white liberal guilt, so to speak) for the founding of Israel, but it's not as if it has any impact now to debate that. And of course it's rather clear that such propoganda is largely ineffective for obvious reasons. Sure, I get that these people are largely irrational on the topic and this is an outburst of that. But I just can't see how some people think things so obviously documented otherwise in history when even in their crazy other views it has no relevance and does no good to talk about. But of course being irrational means just that...

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

Andrew Sullivan, Sept. 20, 2006:

"The irony of Goldwater's career is that this decision (to oppose the 1964 Civil Rights Act), made on a principled stance of federalism and limited government, became something else on the ground. It shifted the Republican Party base away from California and the sun-belt into the Deep South. Goldwater was a Western conservative, not a Southern one. And whichever party the South controls will have a hard time reflecting the kind of skeptical, libertarian, tolerant principles Goldwater believed in. So he both created American conservatism and laid the grounds for its eventual implosion. All these years later, the end-result is a Texan president who hasn't seen a civil liberty he wouldn't junk at a second's notice, who bases campaigns on subtle appeals to prejudice and fear of minorities, who has doubled the debt of the next generation, expanded government at a pace not seen since FDR, engaged in two reckless wars without the preparation or manpower to succeed, presided over a government riddled with incompetence and cronyism, and who has nominated candidates to the Supreme Court using their religious faith as a criterion. Whatever else Bush is, he is not merely not Goldwater. He is, in many ways, his nemesis. Which is why conservatism as we have known it has been strangled - by the Republicans. And why the fight to resurrect it must start from almost the same parched earth on which Goldwater confidently took his stand.

Seeing him today, one remembers what courage is. And it's long past time conservatives summoned some up."

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

So, if my co-workers, cute little 20 year old girls, get flowers everyone asks them why. It's "oh they're so pretty, is it your Birthday?" or "How sweet! Are they from you're husband?"

Today, we celebrate my Birthday because I won't be here tomorrow and most of us won't be here saturday (but I will) and the girls decoreated my work station, made a hat that says 35th Birthday! AND NOT ONE CUSTOMER HAS MENTIONED IT! I feel somehow...dimihshed. Maybe if my manboobs were bigger....

Well someone yesterday

that when you throw your love away

You act as if you just don't care

you look as if you're going somewhere

But I just can't convince myself

I couldn't live with no one else

So I'll just have to play my part

and sit and nurse my broken heart

so lonely ....

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

So I'm posting this from my powerbook over a Clearwire cellular modem.

The good:

Just works. Hook power to the modem, plug into the modem via Cat5 ethernet cable, and I'm on. This is because the machine is already set to use DHCP. But no drivers or configuration are necessary, probably not on PC and certainly not on the mac. I didn't even need to reboot.

Incredible websurfing speed. The bandwidth meters clock my downlink at just shy of full T1 speed. Uplink is not so fast, but not too bad.

The bad:

Every port besides port 80 is throttled down to a crawl. I can barely retrieve my email via secure IMAP, sending is likewise slow, and forget about FTP altogether.

Modem itself is pretty big, about 9" x 7" x 1". That plus the fact that it needs external power, plus the ethernet cable, makes this a less than perfect solution for portability. Cellular modem PCMCIA cards have existed for some time now; they're probably more expensive but if I was cruising around a construction site with a Toughbook I'd probably want the PCMCIA card.

The ugly:

Zornwil and Death Tribble, and their poorly-disguised crushes on each other. Get a room, you two.
