We looked at the average solar luminosity at our distance, the albedo, the absorptivity of the atmosphere, and the transmissivity of the the atmosphere. We also looked at the measured heat emission at the surface and at the top of the atmosphere. It's amazing how some pairs of numbers just seem to match up.... Though in 3rd year it became one of those things that were engraved on the inside of my skull, and frankly, only astronomy majors would need to do that.
