Having grown up in the Philippines, I feel that New Year's Eve isn't complete without fireworks, preferably when you can set them off yourself. I had a few fireworks myself, but the wind has been blowing really hard all day. I couldn't light anything, so I had to content myself with watching the fireworks across the bay and setting off a few poppers.

On that note, Happy New Year to all! I hope 2019 is a good year for everyone.

Two minutes in.  Shellfire in the distance around us, but nothing worrisomely close.  Cold and partly cloudy conditions.  Cats are disturbed but both of them are wusses.  A fresh can of food -- and turning the electric throw blanket -- seems to be restoring morale.  We can hold without any additional support at this time; supply condition excellent aside from the perennial lack of antimatter ordnance.

For what it is worth my mother is still recovering from neck surgery.  (at home, but a while to go before full strength, obviously)

With my job phased out a couple weeks ago, I hope I get a job at some point in 2019. (though not worried much about that until my mother get at least a little better.)

Sorry.  I'm going into 2019 recovering from surgery.  Had a heart ablation this morning to fix atrial fibrillation issues that started about 3 years.  Typing this covered in stickers all over the chest and tubes coming out of me.

Interestingly, this will probably be the first time in many years I'll be awake for the ball drop.  ?

Well played, sir but I would argue that Superman was a moral Ideal, more so than a working class hero. He was a defender, rather than a spearhead.

Actually, Superman is a comfort. Good Superman stories emphasize his intelligence and moral fortitude, rather than his myriad powers. The best ones have not been the silver age stories, but those where writers go into what he believes and does, and his relationships are out the normals. There were several good Superman  stories in his DCAU series, but for me the best have been Superman for AllSeasoj, and Red Son.

A goblin in  a bar leaned over to the person next to it and said: "Do you want to hear an Ulronai joke?"

The man looked down on the little goblin and said: "You could do that, but I warn you I am chief assassin among all the Ulronai, the seven foot guy besides me is the greatest warrior among the Ulronai and the guy besides him is the darkest and most powerful warlock and curse bringer among all of the Urlonai. Now are you SURE you want to tell me an Ulronai joke?"

"Nah" said the goblin. "To much work having to explain the joke three times.."

No problem with the side point.

I would disagree however with the argument that a superhero horror is as valid as a comedy. Because horror movies genre already have superpowerd beings. The monsters.
Dracula, Werewolves and other monster movies have a superpowerd creature attacking regular humans, either it wins or the humans finds it weakness and defeat it.
So this movie is going to be a super kid killing people until someone discover kryptonite or just calms him down.
Keep in mind that you have to sit and watch for an hour or more just to see this play out. The idea might be a fun thought experiment and good for a paragraph or two but its not strong enough to be a movie.
It will bore people, some might like the idea enough (and even more importantly like the idea of liking the idea enough) so much that they cant admit to themselves that the premise would barely be enough for a short film not a full feature.
    But it will be bad.
A far better mix of superhero and horror have been made in the exellent series Astro City. I wont spoil it but it was pretty dam cool. And unlike the endless deconstructions we see today it actually made you think.

This movie is made to be enjoyed by people who think supporting deconstructions makes them better than other people.
Even if its as mindless as: "What is super hero was super villan?"
It is quite manipulative, tricking weak willed people out of their cash by exploiting their desire to feel smarter than everybody else.

Changing around a character trait just to serve your story is a sign of hack writing and the more jarring the change the more hack the writer is. The more a writer can do with a characters established traits the greater the writer.

I can't argue those points. It's just that with this movie, the Injustice video games, the recent animated Justice League: Gods and Monsters, and to a lesser extent Batman vs Superman, the popular trend seems to be throwing shade over one of the brightest heroes in pop culture.

At least in the WB's DC properties, Superman still thinks and acts like Superman.

I can't watch the trailer over my home connection, so I can't comment upon it.

But yeah, there's sure a lot of deconstructions, subversions, parodies, blah blah blah of Superman.

After a certain point, it's no longer clever.

When "subverting" a trope becomes the trope, it's actually more "subversive" to try going back to the original and play it straight. In the case of Superman, this is the common man given godlike power -- born an alien, but raised in idealized small-town America -- who does *not* misuse that power. Who is indeed in all ways good.

What are you arguing against here?

Why should a Superman movie where he is not evil be a comedy? Hope is subversive only in social situations where the powers that be want you to be without hope. Hope in itself is positive and uplifting. Not subversive.

Why should superheroes selling big or being big in public consciousness somehow make interpreting this sadness irrelevant?

Your right about Dr Who being of patchy quality but that is how that series has always been. It all depends on the writer.

That said what we are complaining about is the sad state of affairs when it comes to depicting Superman. Always trying to make him evil.
                                                                                                                                   IT SUCKS!

The suits and mutants idea for a superhero movie dealing with power and responsibility is all well and good. Infact that is what the Marvel universe is based on.
But Superman is greater than that. He is the first Superhero and as such have one foot in the sci fi genre. The question is what happens if a good alien with world threatening power comes to earth?
If the answer is that he would become a monster or that humans and aliens could never get along then its hack writing. Black and white 50's monster movies had more insightful writing.

This seems like the Superman movie Zack Synder wanted to make. It fits right in with the DC movies. I'm not sure if this movie will offer us anything new, but it may be fun to watch.

This has been a consistent trend ever since the early 2000s, possibly earlier. Ever since the comics started going "darker" with every character and group, society as a whole continues to relish in the "fallen hero" or anti-hero. Look at how incredible Deadpool did at the box office. Look at the difference between the Dark Knight films' successes versus the other DC movies... oh wait, that's an entirely different problem. Anyway you get the drift. Society has become so incredibly jaded by the constant stream of "bad news" that they've lost their hopes and dreams that the early comics gave us and promoted. Sure Marvel characters were always flawed in some way, but that made them humans with powers, rather than powers parodying humans. But I think that "flawed essence" grew out of control. That's what I liked so much about Cap America: First Avenger, it actually showed what a real hero is: the willingness to personally lose everything to save others. Now we just have jokes quipping from the lips of characters and that makes them "fun" and "good" because they make us laugh. Laughter dies, hope can last for an eternity if we don't let it go.

    It's not just Superman, LL.

Modern society has an active interest in destroying and devaluing any icon of Valor, morality, or idealism.

I spent years going a little nutty: I couldn't understand why people worked so hard to find and expose any tiny failing in a public figure.  Remember that this is the same media (no; it's not, but it would like you to believe it is) that once concealed FDRs polio for as long as possible.

    At any rate:

With hate, snark, depression, and cynicism at all-time highs, society _wants_ the paragon of virtue destroyed.  It makes it far easier to continue not trying to be one.
