It seems to me that the beginning of next season may turn into a trainee / B-team arc. I think Curtis may start to train up, and it's possible they'll reintroduce the teen girl who stole Black Canary's ID. It's also possible that Barry wiped out their continuity in Flash.

Superhero shows on TV... I'll watch them. I don't analyze or critique them. I just enjoy that they're on.

It's that or have to watch all the other craptasticness that's on the air.

You make a valid point, Ternaugh.

It has long been understood/acknowledged, at least by Champions' original creators, that RPG sessions make for lousy comic (and by extension tv or movie) stories. One of the reasons for that is that highly effective play by smart players (call it "power-gaming" if you must) is a great way to "win the game," but not a great way to write a story with a classic (and therefore classically satisfying) dramatic arc.

Unfortunately, while tv writers are (usually) very familiar with classic dramatic structure, they are woefully behind the curve when it comes to creative and/or optimal use of super powers, and not nearly experienced or savvy enough to work out the logical consequences of the super power usage they do write into their scripts.

What we end up with is a huge disconnect between what the tv writers are capable of and what we, as diehard comics readers and Champions players, expect from a superhero universe/campaign. I'd like to believe that there is a middle-ground between the two extremes; that there is a satisfying mixture of classic storytelling and smart RPG-style power usage to be found. It probably just takes a different breed of writer than Hollywood generally has access to. Not many talented writers have a background in superhero RPGing. The original Wild Cards crew is about the only one that immediately comes to mind.

Really? I was impressed with the finale. There were some plot holes but the execution was stellar, especially the acting. And if Whedon is riffing off classic plots then that's actually a big plus in my book. It means he's staying close to the source material.

Okay, Rupture's introduction made me smile because it is borrowing elements from the little read Nu52 Vibe comic series which  I enjoyed a lot, and it's nice to see that someone has read it. In fact, cisco's storyline was probably the most engaging part about this. Watching him talk to Dante and things come to light may not have been non stop action, but it really showed off things I liked about the character. Cisco wants his family's respect. He wants to be close to his brother, but in the  end, he realizes there's a bridge, maybe one too far... and it's melancholy. But they may try.

Barry's story was brought here by a huge idiot ball, but on its own it is... well, enjoyable. Barry realizes he screwed up, but whether he should risk a big badda boom or not, risking countless others? Hard call. Of course, with Zoom killing willy nilly when he pleases and trying to terrorize the planet into subjugation, Barry finds himself making the hard choice. Is it the RIGHT choice? I guess we'll see. The idiot ball painted the character in this corner. If you can ignore the cause, you can feel sympathy for the dilemma.

The results of his final choice were just...well, neat.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

My name is David. My college era gaming group called me "Dave Man" and then "D-Man" when they got lazy. I do not know why. It was stupid. Embracing this pointless nickname, my handle back on the Cybergames boards and then the Hero boards and then these here resurrected Hero boards was D-Man.

However, back during the flame-wars of old (today is weak tea compared to 2003-2005) I led a coalition of like-minded flame-war disrupting and derailing dastards under the moniker of Von D-Man, the monocole doffing, hessian boot wearing, kaisereich uniform wearing, bad German accent wielding Supreme Leader of PAID in Full. Whenever the flame warriors gave up and surrendered a thread (and boo-hoo'd at me in whiny private messages) we informed them they had been "Paid in Full."

Yet, someone took to abbreviating Von D-Man as VD-Man and, well, no thank you. Since ScubaHERO had taken to referring to me as "Von-D," and occasionally "Vondy," I asked Simon to change my handle to Vondy. It has been thus for years on end now.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

The blue-covered1977 Dungeons and Dragon boxed set. It was 1979. I was 7.

I played a ton of early games, however, and I loved a lot of them.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

    Same.

    What are you currently playing/GMing?

I have been running FFG Star Wars, but last week converted the characters to Hero 5th.

I have a street-level TAS style Hero game I want to run in the near future.

When did you start to play Hero?

I first played Hero in 1983, but didn't settle on it as my system of choice until 1991.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)
During college I had a job which included coming in on weekends and running Virex and pulling all the porn off of the various work stations. There was a group who came in for LAN parties gaming  Lucasarts X-Wing combat flight sim. We all had call signs based on our squadron,: Red Leader, Red 2, etc. Since I was in every weekend I got good and after I got lucky and took out a particularly tough Imperial Ace one of the guys gave me the nickname. Also I'm a redhead.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?
    D&D 2nd edition.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?
The same guy who introduced me to D&D had a homebrewed superhero game based on D&D mechanics. I took it over to give him a break.

    What are you currently playing/GMing?
    Playing: Trail of Cthulhu
Running: Prepping for a 6th ed, Champions campaign based around a super team working for UNTIL.

I've been on the HERO boards since Feb. 2003. I mostly hang out in the back row nowadays, but have been known to post every once in a while (sometimes it's even something that's actually constructive).

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? Aylwin Grimboud was a character in a long-running Fantasy HERO game. He started out as the son of a middle-class armorer, but became a knight/mage who eventually became the consort of the Queen. And the 13 is my lucky number.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?  I played in a pick-up game of AD&D 2E at the public library. Borrowed a 1st level dwarf from the GM, and was killed by an air elemental in the first encounter.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?  Champions.

What are you currently playing/GMing?  I am currently between games. My HERO GM moved out of state, and with HERO Central gone those games are kaput.

When did you start to play Hero?  I picked up the 2nd Edition Champions Box set in the Spring 1982. HERO has been my game of choice pretty much ever since.

I'm still enjoying the show. The 'spy's goodbye' this week really got to me.

And in spite of the various criticisms in this thread, some of which I agree with, I will continue to watch the show until the ABC execs take it off the air. Although it's far from perfect, It's still magnitudes better than a lot of whats on TV today.

    YMMV

Constantine was the show that I thought was quite good that was dumped unceremoniously and without just cause.  It had the makings of a great cult hit but they refused to give it a chance.

See, to me that sounds awesome. Well, not the goosing and deep french kissing, but everything else. I'm excited by seeing characters with radically different backgrounds interacting. IMO that's one of the most appealing features of the super-hero comic: it allows the blending of elements from diverse genres in a shared continuity, like almost nothing else.

OTOH you absolutely have the right not to like that or want to see it, and to ask for forms that appeal to you. Just let those of us who do have our fun.
