  1. well i havent played recently because its hard to find a group where i live or get together with people but when i did i very rarely played in a four color setting. but the setting i did play in was like the real world if you murdered someone and their where witnesses then 75% of the time you would be in major trouble with the law thats life. Didnt mean that you would actually be convicted but you also wouldnt just walk away with no reputation problems. plus you dont just scare the bad guys you also scare the good guys and a person with powers beyond those of mortal men who goes around scaring people will eventually make them hostile thats the real downside. just because your character likes in a gritty bloody bullets and blood setting doesnt also mean they must be that way also. The four color settings have their conventions villians dont generally kill that often in four colors it isnt a matter of whether they would in the real world or if they exsisted right here and now. its a matter that the villians have codes themselves like they dont randomly kill people they threaten yes but very little body count heros are differant however . they rob alot of banks and jewelry stores and mints and museums and such is the life of the villian. thats four color world. other settings are differant and the characters in those games are differant and can be any range from violent to pacifist.
  2. exactly i didnt say killing was evil sometimes it is neccesary i agree. I have created paramilitary/soldier type characters also. they dont say they are hero's they are soldiers they kill thats what they do. they care who they kill but when it comes down to it all people are equal they try to kill you you try to kill them no remourse no bad feelings no anger or hatred or ill feeling either thats what being a soldier is. but the characters i create as hero's dont kill if someone has to die then thats for the governing body to decide not him. If the state says he has to die then its the duty of the state to do it. its the states responcibility to be able to or to hire an executioner who can do it properly. its not for my character to play god nor judge. He doesnt stand above the people and say "i have decided the fate of the puny mortals fear and beware of my wrath." otherwise he deminishes the authority of those he is serving and trying to help. they might as well shrug off the pomposity of being a hero and just declare themselves gods. They sure have the Super Powers to do it.
  3. having super powers, gadgets, magic, mystic whapping stone of the gods, or even a bad attitude with cutlery that can spring from your fists does not make a person a hero. on this issue i have to say i have created characters that would both had the capability to execute powerful prisoners if called to and would do so. But i have also made characters who would not do it. I have also made characters who would may or may not do it. what is the differance in these characters why would one do it and another not and yet another have difficulty deciding. Those who would do it are generally soldier characters they kill because that is either their job or because that is what they have chosen to do they arent hero's nor do they claim to be hero's they are soldiers in other words killers with a cause. the other one who would have trouble with it are like the average super hero he might think it is neccesary but have trouble convincing themselves that they should do it in the end they are ending a life and cant ever take it back. the last of these characters are those who wouldnt kill these arent characters who live in a rose colored world they are characters who know its black dirty and dingy and try to be better then that. The do not kill for many reasons because they can take life easily in fact but they choose not to but what if theyre wrong. thats the reason what if theyre wrong they arent gods they arent able to see into the mind of others nor know if that person couldnt change their lives in the future. even if the have telepathy and can delve the mind and have clairsentiance and can fortell the future thses are never absolutes if they where then there would be no room for things like hope, reason, humanity, or compassion. Every single man and woman on this world is evil by nature they are they are greedy, envious, hateful, and vengeful and all you can do it try and be better then that try and move beyond it. Thats what it means to be a hero. Instead of taking life a hero seeks to preserve life and hope to try and change the world into a better place. when one claims to be a defender of peace and hope and the future kills they disregard all of these things. He has no hope that the one he kills can chage he shows he is a defender of peace at the edge of the sword and shows he had no desire to see if the future proves better then today. A hero tries his hardest, laying down his own saftey and life, to do what is right to make sure people can live and hopes that their efforts will make the lives of the people of the future, the children of today, better. strange and unusualy powers does not make someone a hero its perseverance and dedication to life.
  4. well i personally get bored with the D&D/Tolienesque settings I took my normal D&D game and retooled it back to the old legends and mythologies that pertained to things like elves, dwarves, trolls. My world was full of legends of their own like that you should always be wary of mirrors because they had a magic of their own and a dangerous one. forests are not peacefull places they are deathtraps for those who dont keep a torch lit. the night is haunted by vile creatures and the dead. the most striking differance is that Elf is the human name for those who come from Arcadia the world apart. This imcludes the sylvain who are like normal D&D elves, dwarves, gnomes, trolls, nymphs, satyr, pixies, spites, ect. Goblins and Hobgoblins are Elves and a few of the other Goblinoid and classically evil races are one of the various arcadian races who enjoy acting maliciously and murderously tword those they see as beneath them. This causes the lower Elves to be goblinized which makes them ugly and vile looking Sylvain however can goblinize but may not for some reason the Goblin King who is sylvain is extremely beautiful which is not uncommon for sylvain goblins. Orcs are pigs who got lost and entered by some means into arcadia and over time began to walk upright on their hind legs and became more human like but with an voracious apatite. they will eat anything and often raid human lands with goblins killing and devouring their victims. They are slothenly and barbaric in the extreme. There are also other Arcadian Animals which occassionally walk outside of arcadia such as rabbits, foxs, cats, dogs, wolves, badgers, weasles, rats, and many others. Arcadians do not cast spells and are instead magical in their exsistance their magic requires no words gestures or materials because they are things of imagination what they imagine becomes real. Arcadians also have varying susceptability to iron Sylvain being the most vulnerable to it dwarves Being the least. Humans have magic also but they learned it through trial and effort while dabbling in forces they shouldnt have touched to begin with. Dragons are stupid beasts only the Wurm are inteligent and despise dragons for being aberant constructions created by evil beings. There was alot more of it but i stopped my D&D campaign and havent converted it over to FH yet. I changed all this because i hated how every single D&D setting was a carbon copy of the one before it and many GM's dont want to take the time to change things a bit or cant think of anything beside tall willowy elves, squat dwarves, and regenerating trolls. Many GM's dont even know the legends which Tolien based his characters and setting on.
  5. a space suit might not be able to stop drone nanites whose only function is burrow to 6 inch depth and deplow payload. the payload in this case is the neurotoxin. 6 inches of burrowing would allow the nanites to penetrate the suit and deploy the nerotoxin and effect the person in the suit even though the suit hasnt been punctured in an extreme way that would fault its basic function. thats one special effect that would still be resistable with immunity to toxins but that the special effect of the suit wouldnt prevent. You should always keep in mind that in hero system. the special effect of a power is important it isnt just flash bang or sparkle sparkle ooooo ahhhhhh. The special effect means something and defines yet another factor in the function of the ability just as much as the power used to build it the advantages and limitations placed on it or any rules which may also apply to it. In essence we are talking about the differance between a cup make of glass and a cup made of plastic. Theyre both a cup and function like a cup. the glass cup can resist most acids and has a little more heat resistance then the plastic cup but the plastic cup is less fragile and will last forever if used properly. This in hero would be covered by the special effect of the cup. A Awsome Amazing Outstanding Cup of Normality + 5 transform minor 1d6 (hard to drink liquid into easy to drink liquid)+1/4 0end +1/2 OAF -1 independant -2 AC:8 RC:2 in either glass or plastic
  6. the is a SFX vrs SFX problem. The "nerve gas" was define that way thats its special effect. and the space suit has self contained breathing prolly in the form of having a time limit of how long the person inside can go without air. questions 1 how does this nerve gas get to its target, how is it delivered in what form 2 can we assume the special effect for this space suit is like a normal space suit in other words self contained which it sounds like 3 if defined as gas would a "gas" based toxin get through a suit which is proof against high pressure low pressure, vacumm, and has self contained oxygen supply. if the suit has a hold in it it looses all of the above powers because of its special effect. 4 if defined as liquid how would the liquid penetrate a sealed suit which does not allow the outside environment into the suit. like i said the special effect of the suit is that of a sealed suit with contained breathing systems, seales to prevent exposure to pressure fluxuations, and vacumm. if defined as gas, liquid, or solid how does it get through the suit to its target. this is totally special effect and definition of the NND involved in the nerve gas as GM i would rule that it wouldnt effect it cut and dry.
  7. quote: But killing attacks completely bypass normal defenses if you don't have resistant defense, while normal attacks always get PD+DEF against both Body and Stun. as i remember it the body from a normal attack like HA or energy blast go through normal defences. Body Damage is always resisted by resistant defenced not by regular pd and ed. i feel they are about equal normal attacks do predictable body and stun killing attacks do predictable body but unpredictable stun therefor balancing it out sometimes you get high sometimes low.
  8. the reason you get less because you have a robot body is because he isnt always impaired because he is using a power suit. its like this he may be a brain in a box but if he rarely if he didnt have a robot power suit his disadvantage would be worth 25 points because he is impaired all the time and its fully impairing which means he cant move, communicate, or percieve all the time he doesnt have a robot he can pilot to make up for the lose of capability. now lets say you have a guy who is brain in a box number 2 and is jacked straight into a robot and cant be removed this gives him no disadvantages his body is the robot and unless the robot is missing basic human capabilities these would be their own disadvantages. now lets say another BIAB has a robot body he can be taken out of once and awhile and he uses it half the time this would mean he isnt impaired because he has the robot that allows him to overcome his impairment once and awhile. which would end up being frequently impairing andf fully impairing because for some reason he cant use the robot half the time and therefor becomes frequent and if he;s out of the robot its fully imparing so it would be 20 points. Now lets say BIAB4 is a guy who stays in his robot armor suit all the time but can be pried out if someone tries really hard this would mean he infrequently impaired but its fully impairing so it would be worth 15 points because he is infrequently out of the suit which means he can lift objects and talk and breath and eat most of the time. This is how Tony Stark is made he has is injured in the veitnam war and now has a heart condition he cant walk around or do even minor lifting because of it. but he recently built a suit in his basement which takes the load off his heart and gives him highly enhanced physical capabilities and while wearing it he doesnt suffer problems with his heart. But if he takes it off the problems are still there. he also doesnt want to stay in the armor all the time especially on dates or talking to friends or going to get a snickers at the local BP. So he doesnt wear it all the time only about half the time this would make his physical limitation about 15 points which would be frequently impairing and greatly impairing. he can still do stuff whith the armor off but not all that much and he wears it half the time or a good portion of it. all his robotic armor and stuff is bought as powers with Obvious Innacessable Focus and some Only In Hero ID. This is how Physical limitations are structured
  9. i never liked the idea of the traditional rpg gods to much theyve been dont to death. always attempt to push some originality into them. The main problem with the gods is that they always seem aproached in the method of "man creates Gods" if the Gods truly exsist in your universe they where not created by man. They might work with man or watch over him but most gods wouldnt care about such things as wars or laws or abstracts like good and evil also they might not even be related absolutely to things like earth fire wind water which they may veiw as their creation merely tools. so heres a new take. Bafjier: The first harmony. watcher of times and seasons. Takrix: The second harmony. keeper of beginnings and endings. Malshoru: The third harmony. the steward of change. Harhirha: The fourth harmony. The weaver of paterns. Gorgisha: The rythm. The shaper of things new. Rabakiir: The chorus. The memory of things which are old. Zi: The first Note. The child of all and lord of the heavens. I guess thats all 7 gods.
  10. have the absorption go into body that way itll give him a bit more unstopability. imagine an automaton who recovers half the body done an attack when its hit. it could last alot longer. then give it regeneration.
  11. NCM is a good reason to have 8 pt combat skill levels. By saying oh well yeah but thats only for games with NCM you are devaluating the entire Hero system. The vast majority of settings which people run using hero system usually involve none superhero or none planet smashing hero's usually also including NCM. Also you have forgotten character concept. Some characters dont have a high dex but are highly proficient in combat this is simulated by giving him 8pt combat skill levels to show his overall capability with a wide variety of combat not only hitting and dodging but also being able to strike key points for more destrucive effect. He isnt terrible fast just horribley accurate and amazingly deadly. These are all things which are part of that CSL the choice between ocv dcv and damage. All these things are why 8pt CSL's exsist. just because it may be overall cheaper to go with Dex doesnt mean that it should be removed or that all characters would even have a dex higher then 20 some characters would not cut and dry. for 9 points you get 1 8Pt CSL and a point to spend on something else. or 1 more ocv and dcv from dex. for 30 points you get 3 8pt CSL's and 3 2pt CSL's or 2 3pt CSL's or 1 5pt CSL and an extra point to spend someplace else orrrr 3 oce dcv and 1 spd. soooooo lets break that down. Bubbu Smith bys his dex up to 20 he has a ocv/dcv of 7 and a spd of 3 SGT. BOHICA buys 3 8pt CSL's and 3 2pt CSL's with his punch now these 2 has an arguement over some lady at a bar when SGT. BOHICA was on leave. and they decided to take it outside. they Both have average stats 10 and average figures statistics. Now theyre gonna settle this like men and have a fist fight. now lets check this ok Bubba has 7 ocv and dcv. and the SGT. has 3 Ocv/Dcv +3 ocv with his fists. Now the Ocv for using fists arent so far apart and SGT. about the same and Bubba has more then enough so lets say that when their turns come up they hit each other . ok the fight starts bubba has a spd 3 so he goes first on phase 4 so he walks up and clocks SGT. BOHICA and lets say they both do average damage when they hit so Bubba has a 10 strength so he does 6. now SGT. BOHICA has his phase at 6 and he moves 2 of his 8pt CSL's to damage and one to OCV and hits Bubbu he has a 10 strength so he gets 2d6 to damage and another 2d6 from the CSL's he will do 4d6 which averages to 12. Both men have 2 pd so they both soak 2 points of it leaving Bohica taking 4 damage and Bubba taking 10 now lets say they keep hitting each other for the rest of the turn with average damage SGT. will end up taking 12 damage and Bubba will be knocked out on phase 12. SGT.BOHICA wins Hoorah.

    Scrolls

Instructional Manuals What if the scrolls in your world are a form of manual for the most complex and most powerful spells spells that are so intense and complicated that it is almost impossible to remember every step in the process and so they wrote it down to make sure it was done correctly every time. Make the spells highly complex ritual spells with incantations and gestures throughout and some require certain materials and certian glyphs to be draws on certain objects, all contained on a long scroll. All the incantations are long long poems detailed in the text. The Big Laundry List Of Evocing Steps To Manipulate The Outer Plane For The Transmutation Of Small Amazonian Beans Into Coffee. That kinda thing.
  13. Basically what im saying is that the summoning is just a special effect explaing why a sword is Innacessable. Obvious because you can see it hit someone feel it hit someone and often times hear it hit someone. Universal because anyone who makes a standard disarm roll would be able to take it and use it cause its an ordinary sword but it takes more to permanently remove the power from him which is how Innaccessable works. It all really boils down to the special effect as a GM id rule that hey you can be disarmed normally but this doesnt prevent you from getting another sword it just gives your opponent one if he wants it. SFX SFX SFX yummy.
  14. well like i said i was just posting it up as an example maybe not an accurate one but it would work. one other method would be to just give yourself: Hand Killing Attack 2D6 +1 stun multiplier (+1/4), 0End (+1/2), OIF (-1/2) Universal (he can always summon another and anyone can use the ones uses or get taken away from him), 2Handed (-1/2), Str Min (-3/4), Real Weapon (-1/4) AC: 52 RC: 17 This solves the problem no summon needed no transform needed the fact that he can summon it makes it Innaccessable. The fact that others can use the swords he summons makes it Universal. You could use the same thing for say Pixie dust you have a bag full of pixie dust and if you throw it at people they become gophers and someone could steal a bit of your pixie dust and use it themselves but you still have pixie dust. I think this is also a good method and costs only 2 more points then the 1d6 of Major Transform and is loosely based (a little handwaving might be required) on the rules present under Foci. :D
  15. automaton : ) he has no ego and therefore cannot resist commands given to him. he is a sword and in fact will accept the order to work if someone gets hold of him thats why i set up the abilities like i did no int no ego no str no con only body pd ed comliness cause who wants to weild an ugly sword. life support to represent that he doesnt need alot of stuff and a sword is immune to alot of stuff and also the automaton abilities to represent how he cant be stunned or bleed or take stun and an attack usable by others (the weilder of him)
  16. well both my arguement and yours are nothing more then personal opinion i wasnt telling him thats how he should do it i was responding to someone elses post saying summon was a way to do it. i showed how. The life support is a thorough method of handling it when alot of things can be handwaved some Gm's dont like alot of handwaving. Thats a matter of personal preferance or style. i stated mine i liked the idea of a summon to get the sword and i think a transform is a questionable way of doing it but then again thats my opinion.
  17. wolverines claws are implanted cybernetic claws which spring out from his hands. a sword is a focus. plus eventually the sword will fade away because it was transformed and what about the fact that all transformed things have a way of being untransformed by a set event. i think a summon fits better with the concept plus with it you can change around its abilities like make it a gun just rename it Big Gun (make it a 2d6 ranged killing attack and poof its a Rifle.) (Or Give it a high flight speed with one continuous charge for say a turn. and give it back its dex of 10 give it about 20 pts worth of csl's only with hand to hand killing attack. The make its hand to hand killing attack explosive and you have a guided missle) i just think summon is better:D
  18. something like this? I just did this for the hell of it please dont be to harsh about math or accuracy or anything like that its just a general example of how this might be done. Summon: Big Sword +1/4 cost: 51 Big Sword - built as automaton Str,Dex,Con,Int,Ego,Pre = 0 Body 10 Comliness 10 Pd 10 cost 10 Ed 10 cost 10 Spd,Rec,End,Stun,Run,Swim,Leap 0 Disadvantages: Distinctive Feature: Not Concealable, Always Noticed (generally swordlike) points: 20 Phsyical Limitation: All The Time, Fully Imparing (has the manipulation of a sword) Physical Limitation: Str,Dex,Con,Int,Pre = 0 points 80 Abilities: Life support: Immune to all diseases and poisons 20pts, safe environments (high and low pressure, vaccum, high radiation. intense cold) 7pts, doesnt need to eat or sleep 6pts, Doesnt need to breath 10pts, immortal 5pts. total cost: 48 Automaton Abilities: Cannot be stunned 15pts, doesnt bleed 15pts, no hit locations 10pts, takes no stun 60pts total cost: 100 Damage Resistance: 10PD 10ED Cost: 10 Killing Attack/Hand to Hand:2D6 +1 stun multiplier (+/4), 0Endurance (+1/2), Usable By Others (+1/4), Strength Minimum 17 (-3/4), Required Hands 2 (-1/2) AC: 60 RC:26 Hows that you summon a random Big sword and after you are done using it it wander off into the forest to be happy and free with the rest of the big swords. Oh wait 0 ego and int ok it just lays there happily with all the other big swords or something like that.
  19. oops ok i messed up just rechecked the math and i found i made a mistake. i rechecked the math and i think i forgot to subtract the exp already gained from the amount needed or something like that. i did the calculation after i had stayed up all night watching cartoons which goes to show you lack of sleep makes you stupid.
  20. 13.3 encounters to level the statement that it takes 13.3 encounters of equal level for a four member party in D&D isnt accurate after 1st level if you do the math it goes up in an expanding fashion after the first level. at one point i actually plotted out the entire progression of xp gain versus ex needed to level up each level to level 20 by the time you reach about level 18 it takes about 100 encounters to gain a level for a four member party. I dont have my calculations now but it isnt hard to compute it.after you notice the patern of progression. just thought you should know.
  21. mmeeee me me me I got mine today from my local small bookstore i ordered it on wednesday and got it today and am trying to read it all. its thicker then the FRED. Im happy happy. :D :D :D :D
  22. with a w wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
  23. according to the text on delayed effect on pg. 164 of the hero fifth ed. limitations such as gestures, incantation, extra time, ect are completed during the prepsrstion of the power and that the various rolls for activation come at the time of use. On to the questions: 1) can you reverse this order. In effect creating a delayed effect that requires an activation or skill roll in its preperation (such a spell that requires research to compile the correct formulas to prepare a spell). Can you also add gestures, incantations, and other limitations that normally are placed in preparations in the use area of the power. Basically creating a power that requires you to research the power to prepare it and use gestures and incantations in the use of the power. 2) If you can rearange the order of these effects how would you have to structure a power that requires gestures, incantaions, skill rolls, activation rolls, or other such limitations for both sides of the effect. Such as a power which requires a skill roll simulating research to prepare its effect and another skill/or the same skill to use it after it is prepared. Examples (a spell that requires gestures and incantaions to prepare and requires the same incantaions and gestures ,or differant ones, to cast the spell) (or a spell that requires an "arcane knowledge" skill roll to prepare the spell and then another "arcane application" skill roll to see if you have properly figured out the combat configurations for the second half of the spell, the actual use and casting of it). 3) am i making this more complicated then it really is. Hope ive actually arranged this in a way thats understandable i sometimes ramble.
  24. opponent capabilities one major flaw in D&D and D20 is that it doesnt take into consideration how well trained an opponent is. An opponent who is as good as you are is not going to let you swing at a passerby. Now some people may think well im moving around and dodging and maybe even spinning and ducking and rolling in combat why cant i swing at someone who is passing by. simple answer because you are being attacked by a person who is trying to kill you and if they are even in capability or better then you you will not have the opportunity to do so. If you do take that swing he will hit you while you are not paying attention to him. more then likely you are dodging and bouncing and basically dancing in combat to keep an equally skilled opponent from hitting you. Not to make you able to hit everyone around you. The Truth Now. D&D is a mass combat engine thats what it does best it reduces combat down to a brawl. attacks off opportunity only work in the capacity that they do when there are many many people around you in combat all trying to kill everyone around you. It doesnt make sense when you have only 4 combatants in a wide open spaces. that doesnt mean it doesnt work it means it doesnt make as much sense when compared to the sense it makes in the capacity of battle feild simulation. Thats right a battle field thats what it does well Mass Combat. Not one on one low density multi member combats. Hope ths clarifies some things if not just disreguard this post.
  25. new combat manuever attack of opportunity: 1/2phase action, -2ocv -1/2dcv character may attack opponent who is oving through adjacent hex as character. Abort action. This kind of combat manuever is about the best way to do it. Build this in TUM and either use it as a special combat manuever ala sweep or have characters but it. But i think AOO is not not realistic because people assume you are dodging around and moving constantly in combat and can attack many people at once while in melee combat you are moving alot alot of that movement is trying not to be hit by attackers. Especially an evenly skilled attacker if you take your attention away from an evenly skilled attacker or a higher skilled attacker he will not hesitate to attack in that split second. Now jacky Chan has a nice schtick where he usually does a distracting move then attacks someone else. while the other attacker is occupied with a ladder, fish, or getting up Jacky Chan smacks the hell outta someone else.
