It almost didn't -- they were rechristened the Redlegs for a few seasons, until the end of McCarthyism enabled them to return to their traditional name.

Changing the team name was not uncommon in the early years of Major League Baseball. Nobody now alive remembers the New York Highlanders, now better known as the Yankees, and even fewer know that they had originally been the original Baltimore Orioles, who sold off all their best players in a false-flag operation to sink the American Leaguer in its infancy.  The hatred of the new league was so intense in NL circles that there was no 1904 World Series because the NL champions refused to play their counterpart from what they considered a "minor league".
The obvious joke is moot because there are no other top-flight teams in Jacksonville.

This may be part of why many non-Catholic Christian denominations prefer married clergy. Actually, I'm pretty sure one of the New Testament Epistles, giving instruction on organizing new congregations, insists on a Bishop who is married to only one wife and has no concubines, mistresses, sex slaves, etc. I've never understood why Catholics demand celibate clergy.

I don;t think of him as a "Black ACtor", but as an actor. In his prime, though, a lot of his films were about race, His Oscar was for Lillies in the Field, playing a down-on-his-luck handyman who finds himself rebuilding a neglected convent. This is one of the most brilliant song scenes you will every see.

I'm linking it because I didn't want to subject religion on those who don't want it.

His most iconic role, of course, is Virgil Tibbs in The Heat of the Night, a Northern police detective forced to investigate a murder in the Deep South. It was Rod Steiger that got the Oscar for that one, but Poitier made the film with his combination of dignity, rage, and brilliance.. He made another film as the character, which I haven't seen, but even if it had only been one film Virgil Tibbs ranks as one of the great Hollywood detectives.

Astroboy was one of the first manga to achieve global popularity. Along with the superhero adventure, Tezuka's series dealt with issues of prejudice against "robots" (such as the episode about a robot stage magician who was having a harder time getting bookings). This was daring, because Japan was, and in some ways still is, an astonishingly racist society.

Osamu Tezuka was writing Transhumanist fiction before Transhumanism was even a word in the English language.  And he did it in an exciting, relatable way, so Astro Boy still has appeal almost seventy years later.

The Talespin Shere Khan would be a formidable and dangerous owner of a team.  He is so darn smart that he can really put the fear of unemployment into head coaches, while secretly being very patient with them. The weird thing is that he views his employees as vital to his success.  But woe betide the player who pulls a stunt like AB's, because Mercy is rarely a word Shere Khan uses in polite company.

If you're right, this jackass (Browns #36) should not be in football (assuming he isn't already gone). AB was pretty much controlled, and ready to be dragged down short of the FG Target line. That hit was both unnecessary and cruel.

The effects of all the hits to the head he took will be with him the rest of his life. I desperately want him to avoid prison or doing something so dangerous they would commit him. In both those places he would be among real criminals and real, dangerous mental health cases.

Whoever he hires as his psychiatrist has quite a job ahead of him. You can't impose treatment on a man unless you're a judge — he has to make that decision himself. That much is owed to anyone, famous or infamous or isolated. Theoretically, every player should have a contingency plan for when he has to leave pro football.

A student and fraternity member at UNLV lost his life last week after participating in a ":charity" boxing tournament organized by the frat to support a local Youth Boxing club.

As more details come out, it becomes clear that the organizers tried to take some precautions, but the unfortunate young man was in the ring with apparently insufficient training, with no ringside physician present.  He was wearing the standard protective gear of the amateur boxer, but it did not protect the face where he was struck repeatedly by an opponent of clearly superior skill (who will bear the memory of this event the rest of this life) . The referee was also apparently not adequately experienced.

No criminal wrongdoing is suspected -- the organizers checked all the boxes as best they knew, and it wasn't a hazing situation of the sort that has been threatening fraternity culture on a large scale in the US. But moral wrongdoing? That's another matter. Critics are claiming that college students should not be made or asked to go into combat against other students for the amusement of an audience, charity or no. This would normally raise the additional question of asking anyone at all to do it, but this is Nevada. This calls the value of youth boxing into question. UNLV is investigating, as is the Nevada State Athletic Commission (perhaps the most powerful regulators of boxing and mixed martial arts in the country.

Still, in this case I am thinking it was the attempt of the frat t do something good for the community -- and utterly failing.

Dolly is first-class in just about everything she has done in her career. She even satirized her image with considerable aplomb in the comedy 9 to 5, playing a member of the Dabney Coleman character's secretarial pool who everyone assumed was sleeping with the boss -- until she got wind of it and furiously threatened the manhood of the pool's tormentor. She did something similar in her role as a "respectable madam" in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. But obviously her main career was as a singer and songwriter.

And as far as DI athletics goes ... I'm okay with it, as long as we're willing to call it what it is: a de facto minor league for the NFL, NBA, and WNBA. With recent NIL rules/legislation, the laughable illusion of the amateur student-athlete is rapidly diminishing. It would be nice if the colleges actually required them to go to meaningful classes, though (looking at you, North Carolina).
