  1. Re: So I ordered Pulp Hero OK, I'm reading this and I understand the concept behind weird science and all the activation/skill rolls. I understand the limitations on powers --Of course I have no 5th edition book, so everything I post will be in 6th Ed rules. Hope everyone is OK for that. It looks more likely that I will run, as apposed to play. My other thread about my characters was started before I got this book, but the Shield is closer to the style of play than my first attempts. Your 150 point starting characters translates to 175 points in 6th Ed. One thing different, was one of his Hunteds: a Naga from the Beastiary. It fits the style well. It can shape shift into any human form. Its a monster from India posing as a local ruler. I'm going to be posting him soon. --What do ya think of a monster as a mastermind type hunted?
  2. Re: So I ordered Pulp Hero No offense taken. You called it. I tried again in a new thread. Another mystery man. go figure. However all my ignorance is about to change... I GOT THE BOOK! It came today!Just delivered, in fact. Now everyone, please excuse me while I open a new world...

    The Shade

Dr Horacio Albert Jenkins (“Call me Al.”) is one of the last people you would expect to be a super human. He’s a 40 year old scientist at the Scripps Oceanographic Institute. He really is a meek and mild kinda guy. He has no real memory of ever getting into a serious fight. Now that he’s a super, Al feels it’s his responsibility to help people. But he just now learning the skills of the Hero trade. Al is a mutant with the infamous “Survivor gene.” He was in an institute underwater habitat, and was tinkering with a pet project of his (a rebreather device that could filter air out of sea water). The room was full of oxygen tanks various gasses, and life support systems. An explosion ripped through the habitat, and shrapnel pierced the air tanks. Enormous air pressure filled the labs, causing a secondary explosion that destroyed the entire habitat. Dr Jenkins was found unconscious floating on wreckage the next day. How he got there, or how he survived is a mystery. And just as mysterious was what caused the first explosion in the first place, the habitat was primarily a base to study sea life there was no reason to keep explosives there. (In fact it was a mine dropped from a boat. Al’s personal hunted was hired by powers unknown to destroy the underwater labs.) Al survived because his mutant survivor gene kicked in, adapting first to the air pressure and then to the water. He can now produce and control the air about him. He can bring up a shield of living, constantly renewing air that filters out all poisons and diseases. The shield gives him a dark shadowy aura with wisps of cloud, so he took the name, “The Shade.” Al retired from active lab work when a minor inheritance freed him to pursue other things. In this case, super-heroic things. Personality/Motivation Al is not a hard bitten detective, nor does he have any such skills. He has trained with UNTIL (they don’t insist on registration like Primus) and knows a few basic heroic skills. He has worked locally with a detective agency to help solve crimes. Mostly Al fights crime because he feels that power brings responsibility. He does seem to have a knack for it though. Still Al is secretly pleased he is a ranged combatant, he really doesn’t fighting an “in your face kinda guy.” Al’s biggest surprise is his hunteds. The IHA agents came out of nowhere with killing attacks (they knew as little of The Shade as he knew about them). After the fight he had a conversation with an agent. “I’m a mutant? Really?!! That is so cool!”He keeps an IHA mutant detector on his boat as a souvenir. (I didn’t pay points for it so I can’t use it. Wah) Quote: Shade isn’t very lippy as a fighter. “Before you kill me, I have to say: Your costume is really cool!” Powers/Tactics Shade can produce, control and manipulate air. A number of his powers, including flight are linked to his shield. His shield goes down, they go down. He is great at underwater work with his night vision and life support. Shade prefers to open combat at range and keep it that way. In time he will invest more points into his CSLs to use his complete multipower, and buy a good deal of power defense. And he could use more skills. Appearance: Shade has an aura like Green Lantern, only its gray and has little wispy clouds. Underwater, the aura is lighter almost white. Eventually he will have a change environment that generates a slight breeze and refreshes people with a pure elemental air. Bad smells, smoke and poisons will be purged. Campaign use. Shade is a hero just starting out. He may seek out PCs when a simple Deduction check stymies him. Likewise he’s pretty good with Chemistry. As a villain, Shade’s run-ins with IHA has turned him bad. He is a mutant supremacist now. He will have hooked up with an evil organization out to take over New Zealand and make it into a mutant homeland. Mutants will be feudal lords with normals living as serfs. To that end he will be a part of a team robbing banks and such to gather the initial funding. They will be careful to rob locations with no normal super hero protection…but ya never know who might be in to visit Aunt Bee. His powers make him a perfect under water villain. To make him more effective against the PCs, add Power defense and even Mental Def to his linked shield powers. Add a killing attack, increase a few stats, and add a few OCV/DCV levels.

  6. Just so you know, I’m from a Champion’s background, and I’ve yet to receive my Pulp Hero Sourcebook. So it’s a bit difficult to cross the genre line. In my eagerness, I’m trying to make a pulp character with no resources whatsoever. This is my first attempt. It’s OK, be brutal. Until I get the book, I have no idea what I am doing. The Shield Jim Garrison grew up in his beloved San Francisco. Stories of adventure, pirates and buried treasure filled his youth. The Great War called him, and Jim served as an officer in the navy. He fought in a number of fierce battles, and even saw action ashore. Discharged with honors, Jim stayed at sea, serving as navigational officer on a number of ships. Adventure seemed to follow Jim Garrison. He got a taste for detective work when he solved a series of murders in New Zealand. It was in Great Brittan where Jim met his destiny. He was on a cross country trek when he stumbled through the roof of an ancient tomb. He lay unconscious for hours, and when he came to, it was pitch black. Feeling about his hand fell upon something cold. It was a chain, no, it was an amulet. Buried treasure! Jim put it on. Voices. German voices. In the dark, Jim didn’t know where to go. He cried out, “Hello! Over Here!” Lights appeared in the distance. The amulet felt strangely warm. He could hear boots running towards him. “Over here! Help!” The chamber filled with light as a number of men filled the room. “Am I glad to see you guys, I fell through the…” He stopped as a number of guns were leveled at him. “Whoa!” >(in German) “Commander. Look at what he’s wearing!”< One of the men stepped forward. He was thin, 50ish, bald, and wore a monocle. He stared at Jim for a moment. “Give me ze amulet and ve vill let you live.” The man smiled. Jim had no choice. His hands touched the amulet, and it melted away into his heart. He could feel it inside him…it was warm. The commander knew right away what had happened. >“He’s activated ze device. Shoot him!”< Jim raised his arm in vain against the hail of bullets…But he didn’t feel a thing. The shooting stopped and both he and the Germans gasped as a medieval shield floated in front of him. Flattened bullets lay spent at Jim’s feet. Seizing the opportunity, Jim fled the chamber with the German’s in hot pursuit. He lost them in the night. Frustrated the Commander shouted, “Ve vill find you. And vhen ve do, ve vill cut ze amulet out!” The commander grew quiet, "Mit a spoon..." Personality/Motivation Jim is a thrill seeker. But he also feels obligated to use his gift to help people. So he took a few gadgets, and stepped into the shoes of a mystery man. Quote “Yeah. Gruesome murders. You gonna eat that?” Powers/Tactics The amulet is completely absorbed into Jim’s body, but can be seen with an x-ray machine as a small shield like device protecting his heart. It summons a mystical protective force that has no outright focus. The visual effect is a floating shield, though he can wear it on his left arm as well. The gauntlets are modern 1935 technology. They are no bigger than normal gloves but they do attach to bracing struts in his armored trench coat. The end result is a 3D6 Hand attack. The gauntlets fold flat and can hide in the sleeves of the coat. The trench coat looks at first glance to be a normal trench coat, but any good tailor can see the inserts, and the fact the coat doesn’t seem to wrinkle with wear. The vest is black scales, Jim tells people its alligator leather, but it is actually naga hide, and yet another reason Lord Kala hunts our hero. Campaign Use. As a hero, the PCs most likely encounter Jim as The Shield while he’s on a case. As a villain, The Shield is interested in Magical artifacts, and will haunt Museums and archeology sites. He also makes a good jewel thief and 2nd story man. Jim is a lone villain and may need to be zapped up a bit to be a threat to the PCs. But for the right price he would hire out to a mastermind type villain. --in either case, his hunteds would remain the same. Appearance The Shield is a tall man (6 foot) in a trench coat and a fedora. He uses his night vision goggles as a mask to hide his identity. His hands are seemingly made of steel. As Jim Garrison, he is known as an adventurer who is good with a gun and helps the police from time to time. (he saves the wild stuff for the mask). Jim is a handsome young man, about 25 years old. Light brown hair and blue eyes. Well muscled.
  7. Re: Pulp THIS! Whats the story behind the image? OK, lets try something different: Caption this! Featured (more DA goodness!)
  8. Re: Pulp THIS! Whats the story behind the image? I was thinking story wise. Setting: the Philippines. The war's been over for a year. The boat has been purchased by adventurers, looking for a lost city on one of the smaller islands. They've been running into Nazi subs/patrol boats operating from a hidden base. Thats more of what I've been looking for.
  9. Re: So I ordered Pulp Hero Yes, I can't wait till that gets in, But with Standard shipping, it may be a while to till it gets here. In the meantime, take a looksee at this. Basically, I'm looking at a descendant of an English Lord. Every generation has one person who inherits a unique gift: the mantle of Knighthood. It uses an ancielt celtic ritual to summon all these powers. With gestures and incantations armor, a shield, and a sword all appear. There are no foci involved, this is a mystical inheritance. What I want to do is add a ritual to get all these powers. It will cost end, but only to activate. and it will need gestures and incantations, only to activate. How would you build that. attach it to an instant change, and link all the other powers to it? ---Oh and I'm using 6th Ed books to make this. 6 Shield Immunity To Bullets: Armor (7 PD/0 ED), Hardened (+1/4) (13 Active Points); Only Works Against Very Limited Type of Attack (Bullets; -1/2), Does not work against attacks from behind -1/2 15 Armor 5PD/5ED (15 Active Points) medieval armor appears, 30 points Multi Power: Knight Errant powers 3 Shield Bash +6D6 HA 3 Hurl Shield 6D6 Blast vs PD (always reappears on arm afterwards) 3 Sword 2D6 HKA (3D6 with STR) 60 points in Powers total...! Is this still too much of a champions character? I know I do need to make these powers cheaper-but I don't want to use Foci or activation rolls.
  10. I love surfing DA. So many ideas spring out. http://black-falcon01.deviantart.com/favourites/?offset=216#/d20qj4h How would you pulp this?
  11. Re: A Pale Reflection Black Falcon would have a serious problem believing this. especially that SHE (or her absence) is the cause of a catastrophic doomsday. She would either ignore this or smell a trap and stay away. --The trap part would stand out to her, what an excellent way for a Hunted to rid himself of her by cooking up a silly story and trapping her on a dying world. Psidestep IS a dimensional traveler. He too would be suspicious. Any universe dependent on his presence to remain in existence simply has to be a fantasy. One person simply cannot be the key to everything. and even if it was, the part where, "even your return may not stop the path to destruction" would prevent him from going. certainly with an intra-dimensional hunted, this would look like a trap to him. too bad so sad, hey look: Gilligan's on!
  12. Re: Undead Labor: why not? Hmmm. Undead would be excellent rowers in a boat. Perpetual motion. Spare skeletons are lightweight and can be packed in crates or barrels. animate as needed. Zombies would smell bad. skeletons can be painted bright colors, and the paint will extend their useful lifespans. In a military a unit of skeletons can be sacrificed to soften up an enemy, and both sides can use necromancers to clean up battlefields. Other uses, street sweepers, a group of ten with a (living) minder. Sewer workers. ditch diggers. field workers. Porters on jungle treks (won't run off when bad mana appears).
  13. OK, I'm playing to Pulp Hero ideas. But my book is still a week or more away. 1) I want a character that accidentally swallowed a magic item that makes him Bulletproof. No focus, Just an 8 Resistant PD only vs Bullets. Bullets being being very common...what value would you give this? -1/4? -1/2? --This would give his Hunted an excuse to kill him and cut the artifact out. 2) The other idea is, if this were a summoned shield (again no focus) what else would you give this? I don't want an activation roll, but what value would you give a limit of "Does not work against attacks from behind?" I've been tossing the idea around in my head. I want a sort of mystical shield like protection. (no one ever shoots Captain America in the legs...) I've been thinking of an ancient Gaelic ritual for summoning the shield: gestures and incantations, costs end to activate. Hmmm. Maybe toss in a costume change at the same time. and this would be a cool little multipower, the protective shield, a shield bash, and a hurled shield (that always returns hence the non-focus). The two attack powers would obviously negate the protective powers for that phase. I still can't figure out what values to give limitations for doesn't work against (things not already listed). So what would you give for only vs bullets, and not against attacks from behind.
  14. Re: Skills. How much is too much? What did you start with? I've been reading all of this, and you guys are a real help. Thanks!
  15. Re: So I ordered Pulp Hero I made a character, but I'm still playing champions, so I won't post him here. He was 175 points 6th Ed...but he violated even a champions active point total...The active points here are more than a 100! No GM will accept this. So take a look and laugh, I was just puting down everything I wanted 33 (paid points) Barrier 3 M wide, 2M tall (8 pts), 8PD/8 ED (24 pts), 8 BODY (8) +10 for Non Anchored. (50 pts total) +1/4 for mobile, +1 for One Way Transparent (all attacks), -1 for Feedback. -1/4th for cannot englobe. -1/4 for gestures, -1/4 incantations. >He uses an ancient Gaelic protective ritual< anyways, I have to stop playing champions and start dealing with the genre. Eventually I will get Pulp Hero (it just shipped Monday) So GM's...here's a question. Is there an active point total in your campaign?
  16. Re: So I ordered Pulp Hero Wow! These are some GREAT resources! and some unusual characters! Thanks!
  17. 175 point starting characters. The book is probably a week or more till delivery (standard shipping). My only real problem is I hate running standard gun toting characters. Champions is the only Hero system I've played in. What have you done to make your Pulp character to stand out? I saw a space hero example with 6 points towards a 4 STR Telekinesis. That's somewhat different. I was thinking of summoning a shield, no focus, but paying END to summon it. I didn't want an activation roll, but I did want it to be ineffective vs attacks from behind (kind of a mystical protection). and maybe a small multi-power, with a shield bash, and a ranged attack (it always returns). Like Captain America. would that be too much for your campaign? What would the starting damage levels in a Pulp campaign be? Curse the fates and slow standard shipping! A masked vigilante is really what I want. something different from a brawling gunslinger. I'm really interested to see what you've done differently.
  18. Re: Party design trouble with small group Make the technopath a flying energy projector with a gimmick, he talks to computers. Fine. run with it. Football player, brick. Running and supper leap. Speedster is a speedster. Just like the others said, a blaster, a brick and a speedster. The openness of the Football player sounds fun. Play with a few brick ideas. Maybe stretching arms, and rubbery body. A high rec for that one. If he goes down, he gets right back up. You could even make him a variant brick doing no range energy damage too.
  19. Re: Newspaper Headlines Black Falcon: "There's a sale at Pennys!" Psidestep: "Someone made a vest out of snake skin? Amazing!" I'll leave it to Batman and Robin to tie all of these events together. New Exhibit...Catwoman Thief Gets Hosed...Penquin "D.U. Die"...The Riddler Purse-Snatcher Gets "Beaned"...Joker Obviously commissioner, its a plot to take over the world!
  20. Re: Evil foregin powers Yeah, but I couldn't think of a name...I mean there was a strong East German influence on Maldonica. Yeah, thats the ticket.
  21. Re: Evil foregin powers A foreign power is interesting because it has a LOT more power/resources/influence than say a villain group. A country has a secret service/spy agency. An embassy in the campaign city. And the disposable funds to do a great smear job on the PCs. Maldonica, a former slave state of the old Soviet Union. It appears to be a breakaway republic, free at last. In fact, it is a dictatorship run by the former Stasi (secret police). They inherited a few nukes when the Soviets withdrew, and are considered a nuclear power (only about three are in working order, but no one knows that). --in the last 10 years, oil has been discovered and is pumping vast profits into the country. All this new wealth is funding the old expansionist dreams. Envious eyes are now looking at their neighbors-also breakaway republics. The most likely target has good relations with several Hero teams in the US (including the PCs). All those teams have fought terrorists sponsored by Maldonica (the Maldonican PM is shocked I say, shocked at the accusations!). Quietly the Maldonicans have been gearing up for war. But the threat of heroes is a daunting one. Plans have been drawn up for this too. Thousands of brainwashed "volunteers" have been injected with mutagens and bathed with lethal doses of radiation. A mere handful survived. Now they are ready for testing. Released in the campaign city they will seek out and test the heroes. The villains are not alone, they are backed up by a group of spies out to find the heroes weaknesses (including intense radiation/magnetic fields). Bizarre killer robot drones will fly after the heroes. All sorts of tests, research, and "counter super" measures will be tried out on the heroes. In short, the heroes will be scratching their heads wondering who's hunted showed up this week?
