though until fairly recently there hasn't been a ton of third party material available for Hero. Probably an artifact of them being owned by ICE for awhile and the Palladium vs WotC lawsuit.

Pretty much all of the third party stuff was good. I can't think of a single product that was "Bad".

The early PDF were all pretty decent products too.

The later more modern stuff has also been decent to great. Depending on buyer taste mostly.

We've been re-watching Frasier.  We're at the point where it starts to get a little too repetitive and dumb (when Daphne's relatives arrive).

Finally finished the season last night. Good stuff!  My wife rated it five stars, while I rated it four. I thought there were a couple of episodes that were just OK, and there were some things that I hope will be explored in the 2nd season that weren't here (including the aforementioned pile of dead bodies left in Eleven's wake).

I'm looking forward to season 2. Netflix is really firing on all cylinders now. Although less than half of their original series are of any interest to me, the ones that are have been very good indeed.

Eh, Simpson is the Netflix version of Nuke. He was always a sort of one-dimensional character to me anyway. I see him as existing only for the good guys to have a punching bag. "Give me a Red!" **Daredevil smacks him a few times.**

I actually really enjoyed both Kingpin and Punisher. They were certainly different takes than the Marvel mainstream versions, but each of them really hit the right chords in my opinion. My blah character was Electra. I was just not convinced that she was some really kickass assassin. I got more of a female Dexter vibe than anything. Not sure why everybody hates Karen Page, but different folks/strokes. I thought she did better than okay. Not my favorite character perhaps, but far from my least favorite.

The early Daredevil season 1, where they are building up how dangerous Kingpin is are gold. Love that part of the series.

I would like to see a Black Widow espionage film.  Could include Hawkeye in a few scenes, maybe Cap in a cameo.  But more spy work with her doing her widow thing.

Here's your MJ. I have no idea who she is but based on looks alone she'd make a great Mary Jane Watson.

I don't have any financial figures to back it up, but I would think that putting out controversial continuity-changing storylines that divide the fanbase would be a good thing. Any time you have the fans arguing over things it means they are reading the material and caring about it, to the extent that they fight over it.

As I see it, the real problem is that comic publishing, whether it is digital or paper, is a business first and foremost. The notion of stopping a successful title just because the character should (realistically) retire after ten years of fighting villains--to say nothing of the plot churn that comes with such longevity--is anathema to publishers. Moreover, they realize that coming up with interesting characters and (financially) successful storylines is not so easy, so exchanging one aging character with a fresh new character in the company's roster would be a terrifying prospect.

However, that's how I would want to run a comic publishing company if I had the chance. I'm not saying it would work out, but I like the idealism of it. I like the idea that each character is allowed a single virtual "lifetime" to fight crime and save the world, and that the superhero universe is allowed to have an ever-changing tapestry of characters that come and go once their storylines are played out. Sure, there might be the occasional immortal character, but this standard practice of keeping the main characters 25-35 years old forever would go bye-bye.

Fans of popular characters would cry, "But we love the Justice Queen! Don't take her away!" to which I would respond, "Don't worry, we have another character coming up that is just as interesting and that you'll love even more!" It would be necessary to back that up with the goods, but that's the challenge. The creative challenge that no publisher is willing to undertake because it's too hard and probably doesn't make enough money (though I think that is solved by merchandizing the characters in other forms).

Anyway, that's my idealistic rant for the day.

My goal is a complete collection of first-party physical publications. I'm very selective with third-party stuff and the PDF-only stuff.

I get the distinction you're making, but while IM wasn't rife with comic-book tropes and imagery, what it did include was very important and fundamental to the genre. We have a less-than-admirable lead character who experiences a traumatic event causing him to re-evaluate his entire life, and dedicate himself to making up for past sins and protecting innocent people. That's a textbook superhero origin. The hero's close ally turns out to be his secret nemesis, who takes on a version of the hero's powers so the two of them have to duke it out in the climax. And IM didn't try to disguise its four-color-comic roots: bright vibrant colors, improbable techno-gimmicks, and larger-than-life action sequences.

To me, it all comes down to making a good movie.  If Pixar can make us care about bugs, cars, robots, etc., then WB can make us care about Green Lantern or any other character in their stable. Write a good story with strongly written characters, make the audience care what happens to them, and then execute well. That's what needs to happen.

All the rest is just stuff around the edges, to me.

Heard a review of the reviews on the radio on the way in to the office. The reviews are devastating -- I can't remember the last time I heard such a batch of overwhelmingly negative takes.

Oddly, I'm dying to see the movie now.

Saturday I made my first batch of fresh green salsa for this season. In a food processor, one seeded fresh jalapeno, one fresh seeded poblano, half a teaspoon of salt, reamed-out half a lime, one clove of garlic, and as many fresh tomatillos as can be fit into the processor. Whir it around until it's all little bits no bigger than one of those pepper seeds I didn't put in. Pour into glass or ceramic bowl (not metal, and the taste will get into plastic, if you know what I mean) and chill; you can eat it immediately, but it's better if it sits for a couple of hours.

The batch did not survive Saturday night gaming.

EDIT: If you've never dealt with them before, take the husks off the tomatillos and then wash the fruit in warm water (you'll need to use your hands) to get the tacky off of them. Then halve or quarter them and put those in the processor.
