  1. Re: The cranky thread A day and a half after I got my new WiFi antenna, my internet connection is out of commission again. This time at the other end -- my equipment is all OK, but my neighbor's router just went on the blink, and they're out of town for the next week and a half. I could just cave in and get my own service, but the installation would be complete about the same time they return, so there's no point. Also, it's $200 just to install, and a one-year contract for $70/month. I think I'll just wait until the neighbors get back.... Yes, they know I'm using their wireless network, and I'm paying them for it. Internet service around here costs waaay too much (for really crappy speed & service), and the installation fees are ridiculous, so lots of people split the bill with their neighbors. Nothing wrong with that, until a storm takes out your neighbor's router while they're spending two weeks in Hawaii.... Someday I oughta move back to civilization.
  2. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread Is that worse than being on a Mexican radio?
  3. Re: If you Had to Pick, ONE (already) Setting, to Run in, What is it? There's a scene in Matter where a Culture SC agent lists off all the systems and implants she had to deactivate when leaving the Culture -- it's a long list! I'll look it up later, but IIRC, 300 points might not even be close.
  4. Re: A Thread For Random Links I love that scene. Tiny Lister is one of Hollywood's most under-rated actors.
  5. Re: If you Had to Pick, ONE (already) Setting, to Run in, What is it? I'd agree, but then I think about doing a HERO template for the SC agents. How many points do you think that would come to?
  6. Re: A Thread For Random Links Fascinating discussion of The Dark Knight here.
  7. Re: "Neat" Pictures I AM CUTE AND FUZZY! YOU WILL DO MY BIDDING!
  8. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Sturgeon may have been off by about ten percent....
  9. Re: NASA Unveils New Spaceship Plans Considering Mars is hundreds of times farther away than any previous destination for a manned space mission, for that purpose it might as well be called "deep space."
  10. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. I may have posted this already -- it happened a while back. Me: "I gotta go back to the store... I forgot to buy deodorant and I'm almost out." Ex-girlfriend: "I'll alert the media." Me: "If I run out of deodorant, you won't have to."
  11. Re: If you Had to Pick, ONE (already) Setting, to Run in, What is it? Later this year, my 'homebrewed' setting will be a published setting, so I'll have a more definite answer to this question.
  12. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread The new high-gain Wi-Fi antenna works... so far. If my computer gets through the week without crashing I'll call it a success. Anyway, after a week of camping out at the office and/or B&N to get on the internet, I'm finally online at home again!
  13. Re: "Neat" Pictures Horrendous pun rep given.
  14. Re: The cranky thread Joplin, I think. Anyway, that's why I pack up and head back to the office when heavy weather moves in. It might be a 10min shower, or it might be an F5 tornado.... Also, I don't work around electrical equipment during lightning storms. The job's not important enough to take that kind of risk.
  15. Re: The answer to the most important question in Space Sci-Fi Indeed. If io9 had more stuff like this, I'd start taking their site seriously.
  16. Re: Project WyrmStar: Terracide Idunno... as a social complication, SF-RPG author might be worth an equal number of points.
  17. Re: "Neat" Pictures I am totally jealous of all these awesome landscapes Escafarc's been posting, and here's why: Today's worksite: an oil well in the swamp. It produces about a barrel a day. Hooray for us. ...and the view of the surrounding terrain. I use the words "view" and "terrain" very loosely here.... This well was underwater for several weeks, and as I type this another downpour is occurring, so it may go under again soon!
  18. Re: Project WyrmStar: Terracide And my secret identity is now officially "blown."
  19. Re: Knockback Attack Hmmm.... Good point. For game-balance purposes, it might be better to buy this as a minor transform, starting off at 5pts/d6. (8.75pts per d6 with advantages).
  20. Re: The cranky thread And after the flood... pestilence! Favorable weather combined with miles and miles of backwater across half the county have created a perfect breeding ground for bugs -- flies, mosquitoes, gnats, and what-not. There's billions of 'em, and they're *&^%$#@ hungry! Yesterday I doused myself with insect repellent everywhere except my face (is that even safe?) so then the little blighters swarmed my face. Flies in my ears, gnats crawling up my nose, and I missed a spot with the bug spray, which the mosquitoes located pretty much immediately. Gah!!! I really enjoy field work, but it's gonna be a long summer here thanks to these *&^%$#@ bugs....
