  1. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities Probably "target practice."
  2. Re: [Demo] Jason at the Mages Realm, Sacramento CA, Saturday Sept. 29 I guess I was thinking that CC might be out of layout, and Jason might have had a pre-release copy in print or PDF to show off. I'm just looking forward to seeing CC, I suppose. As I hadn't seen a demo like this announced before, I was speculating on the reason. A preview of CC seemed like good speculation.
  3. Re: [Demo] Jason at the Mages Realm, Sacramento CA, Saturday Sept. 29 What game was demoed? Champions? Full size or Champs Complete?
  4. Re: [Demo] Jason at the Mages Realm, Sacramento CA, Saturday Sept. 29 Hmm, I wondering if anyone could give us a demo report on how this event went?
  5. Re: [New Product] Champions Complete When Jason puts it up, I guess. Personally I'd think it's not likely until product is in the warehouse, or at least on a truck on the way. Which would mean around Oct. 30ish. (Personally, I'm still wondering what was demoed in Sacramento today. The timing is about right for a preview of Champs Complete.)

  7. Re: The Twelve (If you can think of a better name go forit) Deadly Dozen (the press's nickname for the group), Magnificent Dozen, their own name for themselves... Also, if they're B-listers, it would probably be in character to have them rename the group periodically, to reflect whatever "new" scheme they have that will work for sure this time.
  8. Re: Bells and Whistles and Experience Points My counter to that would be sometimes a player is just stumped, bored, or otherwise uninspired and wants to by-pass a particular challenge and just move ahead.
  9. Re: Bells and Whistles and Experience Points I've been thinking about doing something similar with Luck. Just like one option with Luck is to spend point to raise a roll so you hit, another option would be to spend a few points of Luck and "get" a successful skill roll that you don't have. One example I'm thinking of is Area Knowledge. Blow into a town you don't know, spend 3 points of Luck, and "luckily" you find a store with the items you need right away. Same with other knowledge and science skills. It's not really conceivable that you could get lucky and write a learned physics paper if you have no knowledge of physics to begin with. But you might get lucky and succeed at PS:Nuclear Engineer when trying to shut down a reactor plant that is about to blow. Etc. Stuff that seems interesting, or helps the plot along in a suitably dramatic way, could be all considered good options for spending a few points of Luck during a game session.
  10. Re: Potential Campaign Cocept New Movie: "Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters" Tops.
  11. Re: Monster Hunter - New recruit Cool layout. How did you put the box around the movement names, like Running and such?
  12. Re: "Neat" Pictures Abe Lincoln on Mars: Part of the calibration plaque on the Mars rover Curiosity includes a US penny for size comparison. (I assume for laymen and the media. I'm sure NASA knows how big their plaque is.) Here's a recent photograph of the penny, attached to the rover, and partially covered in dust from Mars.
  13. Re: [Demo] Jason at the Mages Realm, Sacramento CA, Saturday Sept. 29 I hear ya. It's really a bit too far for me to drive. Tempting though.
  14. Saw this on the front page, and I thought I'd repost it here for those of you who don't read the main site often. Jason At The Mage's Realm Hero Games general manager Jason Walters (me) will be appearing at The Mage's Realm in Sacramento, California at 4:00 PM on Saturday September 29th. I'll be running a game and generally communing with anyone interested in the Hero System. P.S. What game will be demoed?
  15. Re: Questions about 6th edition that I missed before. That would be an interesting idea for say someone who liked to bear hug their opponents then "shock" them or whatever while holding them.
  16. Re: "Neat" Pictures It's not actually that large however. Most of the individual pictures are "blank" and don't load. This saves disc storage and bandwidth. The script on the page just fills in the image with all black or all white, depending on whether your "north" or "south" of the ground level.
  17. Re: Question regarding Hacking Automatons The other way to handle this is Telekinesis, Only vs. Machines (or Automatons, or Computers, or whatever). I mention it only for completeness; it looks like you've got a solution that works for you, which is all that really matters.
  18. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities Huh, I just had a thought. (A dangerous precedent, it's true.) Speaking of "roleplaying," is the more recent influx of women in the hobby due to Vampire LARP from the '90's onward? I was just thinking that's about when I started seeing more women involved in the hobby. Some were kinda fringy, some were basically geeky and socially awkward; but there seemed to be large enough numbers were many were probably going to stick with "roleplaying" as a hobby for a long while, possibly the rest of their lives. I wonder if attending cons and such now that the relatively young women are grown up is an outgrowth of that.
  19. Re: Things That Exist in a Superhero Universe "Agencies," plural, here includes most governments, who each have their own teams. Also possible multiple multi-nation (ie., United Nations, ASEAN, Africa, etc.) teams too. Including multiple minions and lieutenants, often with standing armies who also possess at least some super gear if not super powers themselves.
  20. Re: Character Creation Cheat Sheet Nice job! I'll look it over when I get a chance. If I could make a request: could you keep separate formatted and unformatted documents? The document you have now is nice to parse via a computer program, and also might be easier for someone to format into a different kind of document. Adding lots of formatting will probably complicate both. So an unformatted (or lightly formatted, like you have now) might be perferable for that kind of work. I download a version, so if needed I can keep a lightly formatted version, but it might be better if there was just one person (i.e., you!) managing this.
  21. Re: Grimoire: Elemental Earth spell - Create Tower Question: I don't have this book (still on 5e here), is that 300 points before or after the division by 5 for bases? Because an actual 6000 point tower would be pretty darn impressive. Also, I think it's interesting that a Summon is used. I would have tried to model the approximate body and then used Transform to build a tower from scratch.
  22. Re: Silver Age Champions playtest begins! Bumpage.
  23. Re: [Retro] COTN 5th edition proposal Incidentally, I had a work/personal computer die on me recently, and I also lost two external hard drives about the same. It was bascially a miracle that I didn't lose any data, but it was kinda scary there for a while. Now I use Box.com for backup. They have a synch tool that makes sure all my important files are uploaded, which is actually more convenient than stopping to make a backup. And they have an Android app that means I can review or show documents anywhere I have wifi and my tablet with me. Much more convenient that logging the laptop everywhere. Between Box.com and DropBox.com, Box.com looked a little more "corporate" and might be better in the long run for me personally, so I decided to go with Box. Some sort of cloud based storage for backups is the way to go these days, imo. (I also use flash drives, but with no sync tool I'm not as diligent about making back-ups.)
  24. Re: Why Don't The Villains Kill? This is my main reason also. In a semi-realistic (or realistic) game, many villains don't want a murder-one charge against them. If you're a super villain, you have a lot of capability that other criminal lack. This includes the ability to disable, rather than kill outright, civilans, bank guards, and cops. So why not use that capability to your advantage? There doesn't seem (to me) to be any upside to killing, so unless a villain is supposed to be completely amoral, a socipath, or bloodthirsty, it seems to me that any villain should stop well short of murder. Even a sadist or sociopath would try to hide any murders they commit. One would have to have a complete disregard for human morals and/or human empathy to just casually kill people because it was possible to do so.
