  1. Re: Ships of the Dark Ages and Medieval Period ~shrugs~ I don't know where Google is getting their figures. I'm speaking from the point of view of a working man who has had his hands on the actual product. Two hundred and fifty gallons is four 55 gallon drums, plus an additional six 5 gallon buckets. Thirty-two cubic feet is a volume that is approximately 3.1749 feet on each of the three dimensions. Now that I have this mental image of the situation, I can see that there wouldn't be as great a difference as I thought. However, even accounting for putting round buckets and drums in a square box, I can't visualize fitting the one inside the other. I was wrong once before, though.

  5. Re: Lordship Ranks I notice that you've placed foreigners very low in the hierarchy, but that needs to be qualified a bit. Depending on where they were from, some foreigners were considered quite important while others would have been much lower-ranked. Egyptians, for example, would have been about your rank 3, while many Gauls and Britons were slaves.
  6. Re: Traveller Hero, a major announcement Traveller was always one of my favorite systems, but one thing that always set my teeth on edge was that, by the time you had enough experience to be a viable character, you were in your late 50's to early 60's. It's no wonder that anagathic drugs were such a big part of the game!
  7. Re: Traveller Hero, a major announcement Hey, SC... I haven't been around here long enough to know everyone's history, so pardon me for having to ask this. Are you associated with any of the aforementioned companies? Is this going to be a good thing for you, financially speaking? If so, my congratulations! In any case, I'm happy to hear that Hero gamers are getting a new source for Traveller goodies.
  8. Re: Starwolf's Fantasy Art Well, I have two comments and I hope you won't take the second one the wrong way. 1 - It's an excellent first attempt. My first try at 3D didn't turn out nearly that well. The pose needs a little tweaking, but it's acceptable as is. The lighting could also use some work... it seems a little washed out. Still, for a first attempt, it takes top marks. 2 - I have to wonder why you didn't post this in the Herophiles Art thread. No gripe... just wondering.
  9. Re: Spells for the Goddess of Love and Lust Woah!! Perfect reference!! For those who have not seen the movie, the premise is that some highly intelligent people (with way too much time on their hands) have invented a device that can record a person's memories, including the full physical and emotional experience. These experiences can then be replayed into the minds of other people, causing these others to display the physiological signs of having experienced the recorded memories personally. Cut ahead a few scenes - As nerds are prone to do, two of the people on this project team decide to record themselves having sex. (Don't look so surprised... who else would a nerd have sex with but another nerd?) The tape of this experience becomes very popular with the other scientists/nerds and several bootleg copies are soon making the rounds. One of the people gets a copy and decides to make a loop of it. He invites a friend over to check it out, and the friend is appropriately "impressed". Then, both of them are called away for some minor emergency and they run off, leaving the machine running. The machine is discovered by the young son of one of the two guys who, like any curious offspring of scientists/nerds, connects the machine to his own mind and sits down for a little illicit porn viewing. When the kid's father returns later, he finds the kid sitting at the machine, still connected... slack-jawed, vacant-eyed, drooling, and twitching in some macabre perpetual orgasm. Sensory overload can be a dangerous thing. I'd like to try it... just once...

  11. Re: Area of a hexagon I'm sorry... but I just can't help pointing out that MP could have made this entire thread a moot point just by changing his hexes to be 100 miles from point to point. So much easier...
  12. Re: Area of a hexagon Duuuuuh... I've got a good little doggie...
  13. Re: Magic System Puzzle Aww, shucks... now, I feel bad about complaining. Tell ya what... we can rep each other!
  14. Re: What I've learned playing a Traveller Never fart in the airlock during a long cycle.
  15. Re: Magic System Puzzle It sounds to me like ritual magic where the power is stored in mundane items by enscribing runes on them. When the magic is released, the rune for that particular effect disappears from the item. It may be reenscribed at a later time, though. Just an off-the-cuff notion, but I'd build it with the advantages of Charges (one for each rune enscribed), and Delayed Effect (the power is not actually released until the rune's name is spoken aloud). I'd also include the limitations Concentration, Gestures, Incantations, and Extra Time (for the meditation, enscribing and naming of the runes). I'm not very good at power frameworks, so you'll have to figure out the Elemental Control yourself, I'm afraid.
  16. Re: Area of a hexagon Mathematics by consensus? Archimedes and Pythagoras are each whirling dervishly in their graves!!
  17. Re: Ok, We have a Star Hero Game, now what do you need What do I need... most of all...? I need 4 or 5 other people that live within a 30 mile radius of me and want to play!! I'm so lonely and terribly, terribly hard up for a game!!
  18. Re: The latest cliché? After quaffing a few too many ales, no doubt. "Hey, Bork... ~hic~ y' wanna go down t' the cemetery an' kick over ~beeeeellllch~ tombstones?" "Naah... I ~hic~ I ~hic~ I got a better idea! Le's all go up t' the ruin't castle an' see if'n we c'n make it t' th' basement 'thout gittin' et by th' rats!"
  19. Re: (Plot Seeds) Title Tag--Fantasy Edition A wise sage, with a love of mechanical tinkering, has built the world's first non-magical flying device... and is in need of test pilots. "Would you buy a used warhorse from this man?"

    Firefly

Re: Firefly It still baffles me why the Fox people took a winner like Joss Whedon, riding the crest of a wave of successes, and screwed with his formula so bad that they totally lost all continuity. Then, when the show was STILL successful, they went ahead and cancelled it anyway. You can't tell me that everything was above the board there.
  23. Re: Things I learned playing a Thief I'm fairly certain that he's referring to the idea of partnering with a large, strong, and none-too-bright fighter type... then letting him soak up the majority of the damage in return for a cut of the swag. I believe the term we're looking for is "meat shield".
