  1. Re: "Neat" Pictures I would expect his reaction could be to kick himself. M33 (the galaxy there) is about a degree across, which means the plane had to be pretty low to appear that large in his image, which means he's either right under the approach path for a major airport (so he doesn't have a choice) or he chose his target for that shot very poorly, when it was in the part of the sky where all the airplanes go. Given the symmetry of the image of the stabilizer, probably he does live under the approach path and this time the plane got him.
  2. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER I don't notice slow loads with any single page in particular. Just at times, any given page seems to take excessive amounts of time.
  3. Re: "Neat" Pictures Another odd one of a piece of sky plus something else.
  4. Re: The Last Word Quite correctly so. If the Zombie Plague were to start there, it would also end there. No brains to feed on.
  5. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Yeah, I guess "shredded galaxies" would be something appropriate for volume 666 of the Astrophysical Journal. Who says journal editors have no sense of humor.
  6. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Lunar eclipse around 1000 UT on Aug 28. Consider yourself reminded. Eclipse page
  7. Re: The Last Word Same sort of thing with English place names, and anything in Welsh.
  8. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Momcat and most of the kittens go back to the shelter this weekend, the fostering being over and them being ready for adoption. I say "most", because one we're keeping for a couple weeks until my sister-in-law returns from her vacation, at which time she gets her as a birthday present. Another we may hang on to for a few more days, since she seems to have a herniation around her spaying incision and may need to be "at home" for a few days of recovery.
  9. Re: The Last Word So is "syzygy".
  10. Re: A name looking for an archtype At the risk of provoking necromancy, I am reminded of this thread.
  11. Re: Musings on Random Musings In other words, just stand back and let Teh Bunneh make a krilling.
  12. Re: The Last Word Heh, forgot about the car-mount carrier stuff. Well, it's good that there's something positive with the name.
  13. Re: The Last Word Not only is it a place, but for me it's a place with a heavy emotional loading.
  14. Re: The Last Word Heading over to Yakima with my kids for a duty visit this weekend. Not looking forward to it.
  15. Re: Answers & Questions Q: How about a nice rousing game of Psychotic Surgeons versus Helpless Screaming Dismemberment Victims? A: Tab A goes in Slot B. It's pretty simple that way.
  16. Re: The Last Word Bazza, that sounds like it's best done as your Presidential Farewell Address over at NoGaDi.
  17. Re: Pulp Hero Resources Another piece of shipping spam from the eastern Med.
  18. Re: The Last Word Gatorade tastes good when you've driven across the Mojave in a 1970 Ford Maverick with black vinyl interior and no air conditioner.
  19. Re: The Last Word I suppose that under some circumstances ... fatigue toxin poisoning and hypothermia ... it might be delicious. Even so, that's not a strong recommendation.
  20. Re: "Neat" Pictures Yeah, the first spacecraft images of Mimas, from Pioneer 11 in 1979, postdate the first Star Wars movie ... though not by that much.
  21. Re: Can you choose not to Regenerate? I can imagine sadistic-villain constructs where Regeneration with Always On could be exploited to the hero characters' detriment (especially if coupled with the bleeding wound rules), but they're custom nemesis sorts of things, not enough to merit Always On as a limitation worth anything. Example: Growback Boy and Somethingelse Lass get captured by Dr. Wicked. Both end up shackled in the same laboratory. Somethingelse Lass is obviously wired up to Wicked Electrodes. The switch for the electrodes is a photocell, so that light shining on the photocell prevents the electrodes from operating. Photocell is put behind Growback Boy's left thigh, which a minion of Dr. Wicked then lops off with an axe. So when/if the leg grows back, the light is blocked, the circuit is completed, and Somethingelse Lass gets fried by the electrodes. A bit of a reach, but sillier things happen in both comic-book and pulp genres.
  22. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat Given it's you, DT, I'd have to say "Unflattering comments about Gillian Anderson". NT: Phrases that some groups of people would put forward as satanic incantations.
  23. Re: Answers & Questions Q: I got a date with Mary Sue Hotbodd tonight. Think I'll get lucky? A: You've just taken a dip in the disease pools of three continents!
  24. Re: The Last Word Only in desperation should you make the ersatz mocha, where you mix a packet of hot chocolate mix into coffee. I've done that in the late "morning" (as in, post-midnight) hours of a long, cold observing night. Blech.
